Re: Race or Server Type?
I've been in both PVP games and PVP servers in MMOs. I can safely say that PVE realms are more enjoyable to me, as there is a seperation between PVP and PVE, where I can choose which I want to do at any given time. PVE would be my preference.

Re: Race or Server Type?
Seems like the majority you guys are leaning towards PVE over PVP. Can we take a look at RP servers also. Im neutral every way, i can have fun in which-ever type of server. But RP servers ussually bring more mature gamers, and a PVP-RP server would typically meen less people running around in area's they shouldn't be, killing people who are trying to quest and level.
I totally agree with Gambit7, we really need to wait for all the details on the PVP server to see what they'll do about those people who enjoy pissing off questers. As far as i know PVE servers will have a inner kingdom where the strongholds are located and that is the only area (besides the pvp mini-games) where pvp can take place.

PvP Servers
For those who just can’t get enough PvP, Age of Conan features PvP-flagged servers, with rules allowing widespread PvP, and PvP-RP servers, which not only allow for lots and lots of PvP, but also feature a robust ruleset encouraging roleplaying and staying in-character.

They say PVP-RP. Not certain if that means RP by itself or just with PVP. How important is to have a RP? Does it change the game play?|TG-9th| TheFatKidDeath

Re: Race or Server Type?
Commonly, on MMO role play servers... people don't role play.

Re: Race or Server Type?
Thinking about it, and seeing how there are bonuses for doing PVP, it may be better to be on a PVP server. Hmmm... I think Gambit7 is right, it might be best to wait and see what is what.

Re: Race or Server Type?
I've always been fond of PVP servers myself.
Roleplaying does not change the gameplay at all. Besides some name restrictions. Being in a roleplaying server meens that you enjoy to roleplay. You'de rather act like your a real charecter in a real world other than a person playing a video game.
Whether or not Funcom is going to stick to the norm with RP servers is up to them. I can't see them doing any dramastic changes to the gameplay in the switch from Regular to RP. But you never know.

Re: Race or Server Type?
My experience with RP is that it's typically dependent on how robust and easy-to-use the UI is. A normal PVE server will have the same UI as an RP server, but perhaps it's given as a choice whether or not to use an RP-expanded UI (more emotes, custom commands, more animations, sounds, hotkeys, custom guild control [for rewards, promotions, parties, etc.], etc). i.e. A totally RP server would have the expanded RP-UI not as a choice, but as a necessity.
Of course, I have no idea if Funcom is doing this (probably not)... but it'd be a cool idea nonetheless.
As for TG's choice... heck, we could field guilds in all servers if we really wanted... and bounce toons between all of them as our playstyles change. The only way this is acceptable though is to have totally automonomous guilds with separate guild leadership. Obviously, this waters down the initial playerbase - but it's still a thought. In WoW, we do have guilds on other servers - but it's typically just to mess around when the main server goes down... no real effort was ever made to organize the guilds on the PvP or RP servers. It'd definitely be a TG first to do this with a major MMO title - and not easy to pull off either.
Chances are Funcom will not have their PvP-RP servers truly fleshed-out at release (I'd be surprised if they did). It will most likely just be pure FFA with no real reward-system or control. Forgive me for being cynical but that's just the norm with MMOs. If my cynicism is true then obviously it'd be smart to stick with PvE until the product merits our time on other servers. I know people dont like to lvl grind more then once, but sitting around waiting for a "maybe" in game design is not wise. It just breeds contempt.

Re: Race or Server Type?
I agree with you in the sense that PVE servers may be better (mechanics wise) off the get-go. But some of us grow attached to our charecters we've made and wouldn't want to leave them in the case that the PVP servers get the fixes they need later on and turn up better. I've never been regretful of choosing a PVP server (in WoW, Vangaurd and EQ2).

Re: Race or Server Type?
The 3 things which make PVP servers unbearable for me: Spawn camping, griefing, and corpse runs. From what I can tell, this game will have pretty good corpse runs, and spawn camping will just make that even worse.
Peronally, I don't like having to PVP my way into a popular PVE instance either. As I said before, I prefer PVE on MMOs... but this isn't necessarily a PVE MMO.
I'm torn as to what to do.
Yes, we could field players on both types of servers, but I don't think we would benefit from watering down guilds like that.

Re: Race or Server Type?
I guess it could be said that if ever there were a game that didnt need a PvP server to get your PvP fix, it'd be AoC... and WAR (when it comes out). Like I said before, game designs are changing these days to give more robust PvP oriented gameplay even in "care-bear" servers.
In AoCs case, TGs PvP junkies can just dominate the frontierlands and have plenty to do just dealing with that... alongside the other systems I'm sure they'll have in place for PvP on PvE servers.
On the flipside (yet again) AoC does have a pretty PvP friendly combat system (more twitch and strat, less wack-a-mole). BUT, w/o knowing how much twitch actually makes a difference in the outcome of combat it's tough to make a judgement there. I remember MxO (the matrix: online) was supposed to have a pretty significant reward for those who chose the right combat technique - BUT, it didnt... level won out just about every time. Only really helped on slightly higher lvl NPC mobs. So, they basically balanced their way out of twitch all together.
So basically, I'm saying if a newb. can at least hold his own with smart tactics while getting ganked, then a PvP server might be more appealing. But again, we dont know yet.
What we need is a dang beta to decide...

Re: Race or Server Type?
I have played Dark age of camelot and shadowbane. DAOC did a good job of balance with PvE and PvP, however the problem that they had was that the PvE content/gear had a hugh impact on PvP ablities. This force the PvP to have to go on hugh raids and quest to get the gear/ablities to PvP. That really kills a game for those that like PvP. The other problem with the mix of PvE with optioinal PvP areas, is that PvP is optional, so if you don’t make a reason for the more PvE inclined to come out and PvP you kill off your PvP base of players. SO from what I have seen in PvE games with PvP, the PvP people are force to do PvE , however the PvE people don’t need to do any PvP, so its kinda unfair.
Shadowbane is FFA PvP ( there were safe city zones) , so you get gankers that kill you leveling, and grievers, however you can grieve back. What I do find exciting about and FFA pvp, is that you can just go half asleep and mash keys and level, there is always danger and you have to keep on you toes. So those that don’t want to die have to pay attention, have scouts , check for stealthers. In a FFA PvP environment, the questing and exp requires you to be on you toes and have a bit of thick skin if you die. Also make good use of you guildmates, because you have to assume everyone else wants you dead.
Other differences I notice is that DAOC , the pvp had no consequences to losing or dying really. However in shadowbane you loose you inventory and you stuff gets damaged so you have repair costs. It’s a good what to take money out of the economy. I like the idea of having consequences to dying, it provides a realism, you have to decide if it is better to fight or retreat. Your actions have more consequences, if you get a rep for ganking and shooting off your mouth then more people will be inclined to KOS you.
I personally enjoyed the FFA pvp.
For my characters I was thinking
Stygian/Aquilonain Ranger: I would like to see rangers live up to the name and be better at scouting/recon then other classes and not just be a bow user only.
Stygian/Tempest of Set: Using throwing weapons perhaps.TG-Irr Scyatic

Re: Race or Server Type?
what he said
.
I played WoW on pvp server a few years ago and it was fun , and element of excitement Scyatic describes was there when questing.
Personally I never had an issue with spawn camping, although heard plenty about it, so I figured I was fortunate.
AoC does bring bounty system with it, however as of late not much has been mentioned about it, hopefully it was not removed.
