I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

TG players and newcomers seem to come from all types of game genres these days, and I see a lot of people that come to play game X and then venture out into games Y, Z and 0 that can be completely different. Just reading through some things here of late makes me curious about what other MMO's people that intend to play AoC have already played, if any.

    Myself:

First MMO poked at was Anarchy Online. I played for about 2 weeks, liked the idea but hated the implementation, so I bailed.

The first MMO that I really played was Final Fantasy XI. I started at the US PC release and played for a little over a year. I was in the top North American guild/linkshell on my server, and we were the first all NA player (servers were a mix of NA and JP, or Japanese, players) linkshell to beat the "endgame" bosses available at that time. I stopped because the game essentially became a second job; FFXI was damn awesome, but required a huge daily time commitment to get anywhere.

My current MMO is World of Warcraft, and I've been playing that off and on for about 2 years. I'm in a guild that's around the top of the middle for PvE progress, and I was the top rogue/dps'er in our guild. I say "was" because about two months ago I had some disagreements with some of the leadership in my guild that led me to retire from raiding and PvE pretty much altogether. We're all good now, but I simply don't care about the game anymore given all the changes that Blizzard just made in the most recent patch. I had switched to PvP for a while, but Blizzard refuses to properly address people cheating the PvP Arena system, so that's over for me as well. :P

That's it for me; AO, FFXI and WoW. What about everyone else? No need to launch into narratives like I have if you don't want, I'm just curious what everyone else has done. And if you haven't done an MMO, please speak up as well! No doubt we can help ease the confusion that you likely have about terms, concepts and whatnot.

I'm primarily a FPS player with strong interest in RPGs. My main MMO was Guild Wars which I was active in for about half a year and was a co-leader in a PvE guild for most of that time until I got bored with the game. I played WoW for a few months but was never really able to get into it. Same with Tabula Rasa, I played until I got up to about lvl 35 and decided to move on.

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

I started out with Ultima Online. Siege Perilous, Baby! When men were real men, women were mostly also men, and everyone was always trying to kill you for your shoes.

That was followed by a stint in Ascheron's Call, then DAOC, and a brief foray into Everquest. I've also played Anarchy Online, EVE, WoW, Silk Road Online, Planetside, WWIIOnline, And D&DO.

Ultima still rules the school with skill use based character advancement, item independent character strength, mounts and housing at launch, indiscriminate PvP, player owned boats, and Mongbats.

DAOC comes in second with a robust PvP system that encourages large scale combat with concrete rewards (Castles, small bonus's for every player on your side).

Next up, I'd rate Planetside, because the whole point of the game is shooting lots and lots of people while working in a coordinated fashion with hundreds of allied fighters.

D&DO is also notable, because you could play a Cleric wearing full plate and hitting things with a two handed axe, and it worked.

Oh, and EVE is just amazing, what with hundred strong flotillas dueling in orbit around foreign stars.

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

I might be the only player here without any MMO experience. Let's let the guy who knows nothing moderate the forums I did play a bit of D + D Online here at TG but not enough time to constitute any type of knowledge on playing an MMO. I've been following Age Of Conan since late '05 when I read about it and when I played a bit at E3 '06. Publishers always make the claim that their game is different but I believe this to be true with Age Of Conan: real time combat, player built citites, siege warfare, mounted combat, etc.

I enjoy RPG, FPS and strategy style games which in some aspects may translate to Age Of Conan. It seems like the game is a traditional MMO mixed in with RPG, a bit of skill, strategy and coordination using the real time combat system along with things like crafting and the workings of the economy. I think I'll also enjoy the social aspect of an MMO as it seems a bit more indepth than other genres of video games especially when you have a game where you can build a city as a group or lay siege to an opponent as a team.

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

    Good Thread!

I'm a MMO fanatic. But I also spend alot of my time playing FPS's and RTS's.

The very first MMO i got into was Anarchy Online (same as Smoking). I was amazed by the depth of it and the ability to do almost anything.
The next MMO I got into im not quite so sure of, but I know I ended up getting into SWG somewhere down the line. Wasn't a huge fan of the Star Wars universe at the time but it soon got me to become one. I spent most of my MMO career playing SWG, and I would still be playing it if it wern't for the huge revamp sony did.

I jumped on the bandwagon and started playing WoW off and on. I never did get to high end stuff though. Loved the dwarf paladin feel and got him up to lvl 56. Then some friends from school made Horde charecters and i got a blood elf hunter up to lvl 64. But never paticipated in any raids.

Also was into Guild Wars when it first came out, and EVE online for a bit. I have alittle experiance in LOTRO and EQ2. Recently pre-ordered Tabula Rasa but it was lacking.
If it wern't for the low population and out-dated graphics I would still be playing Planet Side.
I like to get my hands on pretty much what-ever i can.

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

The only thing I played was Anarchy Online when it was free for a couple months, City of Villians when it was free for a couple weeks, World Of Warcraft Open Beta, and Tabula Rasa (and Hellgate London if that counts )

    I am cheap.

I started in DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) and played that for about 3-4 years, because it had amazing PvP. I tried out Shadowbane, it was a fail. I played WoW for about a month, and realized it was horrible. I then played Guild Wars for a couple months. Currently, I do not play any MMO, but I have always liked FPS as well, and some strategy games.

I started with SWG. It became my life for a while but I left the day of the combat upgrade. Much later I tried GW but it was too linear and repetitive. I'm attracted to the idea of MMO's but not many of them have appealed to me. I am a big fan of the original Conan stories and when I found out about AOC I knew it had to be good. So far I haven't been disappointed with what they have revealed about the game.

I hope another game like planetside comes out soon. The MMOFPS is such a great idea, and allows you to take the traditional FPS so much further than the 30 on 30 most games are limited to. I remember being in firefights with sixty teammates in my line of sight, to say nothing of the hundreds of other people within a few minutes drive. That, and the experience of hot dropping out of a galaxy troop transport into a contested base and securing the control console inside thirty seconds....

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

Earth and Beyond in 2002, followed by SWG for about 2 years on and off, then WoW for almost a year straight.
Tried other mmos free trials, including matrix, CoH, and EQ2.

Oh and since some have mentioned GW (even though it has same online mechanics of diablo2), then I'd say diablo2 was my first mmo(although i know better) :P.

AoC has lots too offer, just hope its not too instanced.

WoW was good in terms of instances in a sense the world was big enough, even though impassable mountains kinda sucked, but anyhow.

Re: I'm curious, what's your MMO experience?

I did Ultima Online for awhile.. OK.. more than awhile. I was really into crafting and stuff to kill time.

I've also done WoW, Lineage 2, Matrix Online, EVE most certainly, Tabulas Rasa, Hellgate, and Dungeons and Dragons Online.

I started the D&DO thang here at TG and the is still a small contingent still involved and D&DO has proven to be the most involved environment so far for me.

Tharashk (HoX), Thraesian (PoM), Thaumiel (Guardian), Sorus (Assassin)

XBox360 GamerTag: P8riotOne (but it might also be my son playing - he can game with TG tho!)
