AoC framerate issue
Hi all,
I played AoC for a while, and enjoyed it, however recently I haven't been able to get my framerates above 10fps, which is frankly unplayable. I've tried turning graphics to low, and then back to high (due to the memory leak issue) with custom settings designed to minimize system stress. I'm running XP Pro with 4GB RAM (I know not all of those get used) and a Radeon X1900 video card, so I feel as though the game should run fine on lower video settings. I can run BF2142 at the maximum resolution on very high graphics settings without any problem at all.
The framerate issue has caused me to stop playing the game, so any advice on the matter would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Re: AoC framerate issue
Make sure you don't use standard low/medium/high. Just set most graphical items low and leave view distances at over 100 meters.

Re: AoC framerate issue
Try running your setting (low, medium, high option button) on the high setting. Oddly enough, if I run my setting on "low" I get worse framerates than on the high setting. Couldn't explain why.

Re: AoC framerate issue
Where are you in the AoC world?
Are your settings set high with Shadows off?
Running BF2142 maxed out is a piece of cake compared to the graphics load in AoC.
EDIT: what TFKD said, I get worse performance with anything less than High settings. BTW - mine is on a 8800GTX.

Re: AoC framerate issue
I have already done as suggested, with graphics settings on "high" but manually setting most / all of the other settings to low. Shadows are completely off, as are particles.
After a few minutes (20-30) of playing, the game starts becoming more and more unplayable. With quick-cast spells, the spell progress bar won't even show up due to framerates, and with longer cast spells it noticeably jumps. Often times, I get below 5fps.

Re: AoC framerate issue
You've probably already done this but make sure there are no new processes running in the background. It seems that something is sucking down your resources. Check the AOC boards maybe you found a new memory leak.

Re: AoC framerate issue
make sure you're running shader model 2.x.
I had this same problem when i first started up aoc and it took me several times of clear cache files, deleting preferences and changing my settings around. There are a few good threads on FPS help in the tech issues forum for AoC which is what i used to fixed my problems.
Ofcourse make sure you have directx and video drivers updated. Video drivers may be the problem as well, try a different version, older even and search the forums for recommendations from other ati users.

Re: AoC framerate issue
Like Vulcan said, I'd switch to shader 2.x or 2.0. It's a whole new world once you do so. Frankly, IMO the game isnt optimized yet for shader 3.0 stuff and probably wont be until the DX10 client comes out in a month.
The other thing is. You're running XP with 4GB of RAM. AoC cant address that RAM unless you tweak a few things. Over time, the more you zone in and out the more RAM is lost and you'll gradually lose texture load times and framerate until you CTD or BSOD. Check the aoc forums for fixes regarding XP and RAM and maximizing it. I have a thread here on TG for Vista users, but not for XP.

Re: AoC framerate issue
here is the msdn file on how to enable more ram with 32 bit OS's. I've never done this but there you go
