Cue the theories that the sub base is actually currently no where near that and that the number is from late june when most people were still on their free 30 days.

You don't need to read farther than the subject to figure that out.
Funcom has told us that Age of Conan has 415,000 subscribers and enjoyed one of the largest PC launches in this decade
But I don't care, I'm enjoying the game.

Those are good numbers. Hopefully we will see the game grow over time as it matures and adds new content.
