Why I've been afk
Just lettin everyone know why I havent been around as much lately. I'm getting ready to purchase an airplane and start my flight training back up again. The way the market is right now it's an ideal time to do-so so I'm taking advantage. I've been up all hours of the night scouring the market for deals so I havent been able to jump in-game. I'll try to be on TS more though, but likely will just be there to hang out - not in-game.
Anyways, just an update. I havent gone anywhere.

A plane?? Don't you already own a yacht? Have you been gold mining?
Yes, been AFK a bit as well. I'm trying to finish up some of my other games. Just finished Crysis Warhead, working on BioShock and with Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 due up I'll be playing those. Too many games. I'm still playing but slowly working up too 80

Re: Why I've been afk
Light Sports have gone down mainly because the tech. is evolving very quickly. These companies come out with one model and then quickly improve upon them, making the prior versions obsolete and driving down the prices (see Flight Designs CT or Remos G-3). I'd definitely do LSA if it was practical, but fact is it's not for what I plan to do... which is long commutes, island hopping, and IFR training (eventually). The weather here in Florida is a bit shady in the summers also.
As for BUYING a plane to train in... I think it's wise with the current market, especially if you can take advantage of the tax breaks Bush put in place. Plus, I wont have to worry about purchasing a plane once I get the PPL... I'll just have my own ready to go. I save $4000 in rental fees by using my own plane, assuming I can get the license quickly. Planes that were $80,000 a few years back (minus Garmin 430s) are now $60,000 (with Garmin 430s).
P8triot, I wish you lived near me... I'd put you to work. What licenses do you hold btw?
p.s.
I'm looking at buying a Grumman Tiger

Re: Why I've been afk
Well.. now.. I am well beyond renewal and into recert. I am probably getting close to being able to recert.. and might - but unfortunately medically, I can't clear.. for about 12 more months. But before all that I was twin cert IFR and halfway to Heli. I never actually even flew a twin outside of cert because at that point we always hired a pilot for the Baron and Kings. But before that I got into second seat on jets (some awesome jets out of your area)- that just spoiled me.
Since then I've regressed a bit - the only flying I would be interested in is floatplane.. a Caravan on floats would be good business.. a flying boat - my new lifestyle.
I dunno.. if you were me.. right now.. I would select a high-wing (Used Cessna RG?) and steer toward float planes. Like me you have two things going for you - knowledge of aviation and knowledge of the winds and waters' surface. The biggest problem you'll run into is insurance costs.. what a PITA.. that'll be the maker or breaker for you on that deal.
More info on TS if YOU EVER SHOW UP AGAIN! LOL.

Re: Why I've been afk
Hey now, I've been on TS while doing all of this and every time I am no one's on.
Anyways, I feel ya' with the floatplane. My original plan like yours was to try and combine the two aspects, eventually. We came very close to purchasing a Seawind, but they've been getting a bad rap lately and of course it's not a plane you'd want to train in. Honestly, I'll be taking a look at one again once I get through IFR. My other plans were a twin otter on floats or buying an old Grumman Mallard or Albatross. One can only dream eh?
As for you... there's nothing stopping you from getting a LSA cert and buying a CT or Remos and putting floats on it. You dont need a medical. If you list the floats as external fuel tanks I think you can get around the weight restrictions also (dont quote me on that though). CTSWs are going for under 90k now and Remos similar if not less.

Isn't the two happiest days of one's life when you buy a boat...er..plane..and then the day that you sell it?

Re: Why I've been afk
I keep it spent.

Planes arent expensive. And "rich" folks arent usually the ones that own them. Actually, most of the people I know who own planes arent well off by any stretch. What IS expensive, is all the arbitrary BS that goes along with owning a plane... stuff that your U.S. govt. imposes on people who own them. Namely overpriced fuel, insurance costs, hangarage (land-leasing), overly-inflated parts pricing and labor costs, lack of viable tax shelters (unless you can sink it into your business), undeductible training costs (also overly inflated to begin with), random FAA and homeland security fees, etc. And on and on.
Cheapest part is the purchase price.
This is part of the reason I wanted to move out of Florida... because since everything is so expensive (even though everyone is broke) it doesnt make sense to own ANYTHING (house, car, plane, etc.) You're actually better off getting loans and/or leasing. Now, if you live in a place like Tennessee everything is basically half price and suddenly things make sense. Hell, hangarage is only like $100/month as opposed to $500/month in S. Florida (in a craphole). Insurance, labor, parts... everything is less.
(sigh)
I dunno, I'm starting to have second thoughts. Although it's smart to buy a plane now, it's still not smart to keep one in s. florida. Concurrently, buying a home is smart as well - but having a plane takes buying a home out of the picture for me. Technically though, I dont really want to buy a home here either.
