Considering trying AOC but have questions

Hey all. I'm a current MMORPG refugee and have been for a year or so. I started with EQ and played my monk till I got burned out, then after doing alot of beta's(mostly funcom games like AO, and City of Hero's) I joined WoW and played for a few years, racking up several hundred days of played time and getting several 60's, then 70's, btw I was Hotkharll and Hoodini on dragonmaw if anyone played. I got burned out on WoW and nothings been able to spark my interest again. What I loved the most about wow was the pvp and being on a pvp server. Does AOC give you a good rush when doing pvp? Also does it boil down to pressing number keys and griding things or is there more to it than that? Ive been watching the game since release and wanted to wait till if worked out some bugs to try it out. Is it worth it?

Having never played another MMO I can't give a comparison nor am I qualified to comment on PVP(because I'm just bad). However, having played since launch I can say that I've enjoyed every minute and that time includes all the bugs. The game is only get better and there are alot of cool content and changes on the horizon. I've started two new classes and that has opened up new play styles that I never knew existed. The game has my stamp of approval!

thanks for the reply.i'm still really intruiged by the game. Its just that I dont want to invest the cash in a game that will collect dust...then again it does look badass. I dont know what it was about WoW, but it would be nice to find a game again thats good enough to keep me planted and raiding/pvping/lvling for over 12 hours at a time. I gotta say though, i like raiding and pve but pvp is my bread and butter. In my hayday back in wow before the 1st expansion my hunter and druid could devestate teams. It was so nice to get into the zone and take on like 4 to 1 odds or more with equal lvls and win in AB. It was like the fastest most intense game of chess ever. If i predicted the wrong move or thought someone was the wrong spec I could be done for...i rarely was.

You will really enjoy PVP in this game, IMO. I'd take a shot at it. Check out some youtube video's.

I managed to find a copy of AOC with a key on ebay from a good retailer for 12 bucks so I figured I'd give it a shot. Hopefully by this weekend I'll be able to rat out a new MMORPG!

Excellent! I've got a LVL 21 Necromancer (P8riot around the same different class). Leveling to 20 and getting out of Tortage is fast so you can join us in no time.

well thanks for the help guys. I'll start a toon on cimmeria and drop a line to someone. Hopefully the game will be here soon. I'm looking forward to devastating some people. Also are there any tips on classes that make a first good toon? I'm not quite sure which class I'll want to go with. I'd prefer something that does good in melee, has cool fatalities, maybe some magic skills, i they have a rush or charge attack that would be really good as well. I'm tending to lean away from an archer or healer since I've played those classes alot in other MMO's.

Herald of Xotli is pretty radical but takes some tweaking to get a PvP build right. Lots of fire, death and destruction animations. HoX's are rather unique Magic/Melee tanks, limited to cloth/silk 'armor' but they make up for it with defensive 'armor' buffs.

Age of Conan: Commandant of the Order of the Silver Dragons
Tharashk (HoX), Thraesian (PoM), Thaumiel (Guardian), Sorus (Assassin)

XBox360 GamerTag: P8riotOne (but it might also be my son playing - he can game with TG tho!)

Go for a conqueror IMO. No shield but two handers and wear heavy armor. Lots of damage in melee. They use tactics on the field to buff their teammates as well.

Guardians are the Tanks of the game with the big shields or polearm options.

Re: Considering trying AOC but have questions

Lots of class choices in the game. Depends on your play style. I started with a Guardian who is a tank as mentioned. They also can wear full plate armour. I picked that class (as I do with in almost any game I play) simply because he can absorb the most amount of damage and live to tell the tale. I'm pretty poor at PVP so the Guardian at least gives me a cushion in combat (also helps in questing). It's a good class, I think, if your ambushed in PVP and allows you some type of reaction time as you can take a good bit of damage.

Though I did start a Bear Shaman and Necromancer which I'm really enjoying. Those classes take a lot more micro-managing but are very rewarding. I thought I wouldn't enjoy playing a mage class but the Necro is pretty cool and though a bit squishy they can deal out some damage. The pets you get with the class also opens up alot of ways of attacking in combat. Bear Shaman, while a bit squishy in the first 25-30 levels really becomes powerful. That's a fun class. So, lots of options, though leveling a new character is not difficult and everyone seems to have more than one class going.

thanks for all the help guys. I think Ill start with a conqueror after reading up, although the bear shaman was a close 2nd. I really love the fatality with the swing to the sack, then the bash to the back of the nugget. I may end up rolling one of those as well. i really like the idea of the conqueror having good group buffing as well as alot of weapon choices and good dps. I just saw that the funcom website dropped the price from 39.99 to 19.99 today. Oh well it would be nice to play it today since I have the day off, but I guess i can wait a few days since i saved like 7 bucks. If i'm lucky it will show up in the mail today. Ocassionally i get an ebay retailer that can get things to my house in 1 to 2 days. Also what are the naming regulations and RP regulations for the cimmerian server? I would like to use my old WoW hunter name, Hotkharll, but not if I'll get flamed or banned.

i haven't played since the server merge, but if it is still the same, you need to use a rp name.
