    3 Hour Queue

Not even prime time yet and there is already a 3 hour queue. NC Soft needs to get some more mirrors up and fast-this is insane.

    Re: 3 Hour Queue

I believe it is an artificial queue to encourage others to go elsewhere. I'd expect this for a few days (weeks?).

Edit: 2hr wait is a big bulk of the time I can allot to playing. Just wanted to QQ about the Queue-Queue.. *Sigh*

    Re: 3 Hour Queue

    It was 1573/1573 with a 2hr 31m wait at 6:30EST. At 7:25PM its at 763/2100 with 1h 17m.

Now 1100/2100, 1hr 52 min wait @ 7:33 EST. Too bad we didn't select a different server--Triniel seems to be the most populated.

    Re: 3 Hour Queue

Now for some official responses from Ayase NCSOFT.

I'm going to disagree with anyone who is saying that we've had a "bad launch". It's been fantastic. So many players logging in at once, and our servers are going strong. Edit: We've seen a couple of disconnect errors (Triniel is an example), but overall I think we've had pretty good stability.

A separate matter is the one about queues. There are queues, yes, and the ones of the most popular servers are long. One of the easier decision any development team makes when developing a game is what user amount to optimize it for. Aion was designed to run good with low, medium or high amounts of players, but as with any game -- not too many at the same time. That doesn't make sense from any perspective. The game would then be designed to cater best to masses of people present only during sub-1% spike time spans of the game's live service, and during these initial rushes of players logging in the concurrency would skyrocket if we didn't put some type of limit on it.

Our queues were implemented to nurture Aion's long-term health. We don't want to see a scenario where servers get beaten up, left shaking out of fear on the sidewalk, already during the first hour. We don't want to see a scenario where we put too many servers online resulting in a barren wastelands of empty worlds once the initial rush settles down. We're dynamic in the way we manage our servers, and we want to be open about this. If we see that queues are still long in a while, we'll look into opening up new servers; we'll look into tweaking maximum concurrency and maximum queue size limits. You will be able to log in - perhaps not right away - but the queues will settle down.

I've played MMO's for a long time, just as many of you guys have, and I've witnessed queues before. I'm an Aion player just as you and I'm witnessing them now. I know how annoying it is to wait, I know that seeing that hour-number tick down all too slowly is annoying, but I've also come to understand the importance of the queues. They're there in the beginning to make sure that your server's got a large, healthy population mid- and long-term, and that's an investment I'm personally willing to make.

    Edit:
People will disagree with this, yes, I was fully aware of that before I made the post. I decided to post it anyway to get our point of view out there. While it is ridiculous waiting for 8 hours in a queue, queues are a good thing. Also consider that the algorithm calculating the queue times does make is skewed due to the special nature of launch and it not having much history to base numbers on. Essentially: They are there for a reason and the system will not go away. I'm asking around to see if there's anything else we can do to alleviate the situation, but I also wanted to explain why we're doing this.
    >> They also stated they are considering kicking AFK shops (don't think this is going to happen btw).
    >> They already increased the population caps on our server yesterday.

It is still unfair to the head start players because they end up spending more time staring at the queue screen than playing to "start ahead"...now that is something NCsoft really should reimburse.

I think you're an excellent community manager, while twitter is kind of a simple tool to use as a communication device with the customers.... I can't deny that it works. I only wish NCSoft would grant you an entire site of your own :P

The headstart has been somewhat smooth. While you are managing the server load thanks to the queues - it is causing a lot of damage as well.

The AFK Shops for example - people seem to abuse it to a great extent - my suggestion is to give everyone a fair chance - please DISABLE that feature until the headstart / launch has passed.

I for one do not need an afk shop this early on in the game.

While useful, it could damage the launch a great deal.

I have had plenty of MMO launch experiences and know there isn't much you can do about the queues...but it's kind of bad with 4 hour queues for us regular people that works eight to five and looks forward to playing all day - only to find out that we won't be able to due to full servers.

Another suggestion could be to make temporary "launch" servers - characters from all servers can be moved to these servers - and only back to the server you originally came from once the real launch and the stream of people has ended.

I mean, why not? That way I can at least progress with my character together with my friends.

How are you going to repay us for lost time with the headstart?

Guess I'll have to remote control my PC from work - put myself in queue and use the AFK Shop feature like everyone else...

Would really appreciate a reply - even though I know you're a busy guy.

    Thanks,

    - Tent.

This is a very sensible post and I think you're bringing up two solutions that would help alleviate some of the initial load.

I have suggested to disable Private Stores temporarily, but as I've replied in other threads I don't know if this is something we can do. The idea is taken in and considered.

Regarding temporary servers, I know this is something we discussed at one point, but it would lead to extreme complications and take a very long time to implement not only functionality-wise but also in terms of character/legion naming and at such an early stage. It's a reasonable idea and I strongly believe it would help, but it would also imply that we'd build up an entire infrastructure around a population spike that occurs for a very short time.

The end-all answer is that we can't put the busiest one under more load by increasing player cap (it is already a bit higher than we'd like it to be) and that we don't want to put out too many servers. If we put out too many servers right now, we risk a scenario where people roll characters on servers that after the launch spike get a much lower pop than the players first expected. And then the players on there get bored from playing with nothing but Braxes and Shugos. We are doing this because we want servers to be healthy in the long run, and designing this around a spike is not going to get you a great gaming experience. It might give you less queues and more play-time at this precise moment, but it won't ensure that you get to experience Aion the way it's meant to be, with healthily populated servers across the board for a long time to come.

That said I've spoken more to the production team today (I'm constantly bringing up your concerns), and we're looking at how the server traffic is doing. We're looking at this minute-by-minute, but also keeping a focus on every "stage". That is - we're looking at what it looked like after Preselection started, after Head Start started and will make another evaluation tomorrow after "Release". We will then see how many preorders stay through to retail (all won't) and how many new ones pick the game up from stores.
    Above from Ayase.

I agree 100%. Pardon my french but it's ****ing bull**** that I have to wait 3hrs to play a game that I've already paid for. Yes, have a queue for people that do not have characters created for balancing purposes. But if their servers require queues this long to manage the current population, I can't wait to see the 12hr lines tomorrow.

    Re: 3 Hour Queue

All day Sunday I simply never even got to the queue...constant "server busy, you're disconnected" type messages. Last night (Monday), I got home from work, fired up the machine and got into the queue with a 2.5hr waiting time (~6:30pm PT). I went out, for awhile...got back waited some more...and eventually got in.

However...when I did finally get in I saw many of our Legion had many levels under their belts and had obviously been gaming for quite some time. I understand concurrency issues (somewhat anyway), but was disappointed anyway that it took me so long get into the game.

All that said, I'm sure it's temporary...well a temporary problem for me anyway, because if this lingers then I'll be moving along I'm afraid...but the good news is we already have a Legion that is growing steadily. So, the launch experience may have sucked for some of us, but the team is doing well. That counts.

Life is too short to get too upset about such minor things

    Cheers,

This is ridiculous, last night I tried to get on logged in around 6:30pm cst. Didn't actually get in the game until around 9pm. I hope it isn't like this for the next few weeks. I've come to the conclusion that it might be best to go ahead and set up a store like everyone else.

    Re: 3 Hour Queue

I think these queues are absolutely absurd. Why on earth did they even let this many people make this many characters on one server? I want to get home and play the game I bought months ago, even paid extra for the special edition, but with 4+ hour lines, that gives me only a small amount , if any, play time. Then once I'm finnally in, all I see are a bunch of selfish f***ers siting AFK and taking up slots other people could be having. As an analogy, I say Aion should be more like a subway. Do you think the people that work for the subway would allow someone to leave a blow up doll or some other sort of substitute in the spot they were sitting, so they can have that spot when they get back? Absolutely not! This is preposterous and infuriating. Other games may have used queues in the past, but not nearly this bad, and Aion is not other games.

I can see how these large populations can be interpreted as success, but I actually think it was a failure on NCsoft's part, not being prepared for a scenario like this.

I was really upset at first too but I learned to just jump on the bandwagon and afkstore with everyone else to avoid the queues altogether.
