Sloppy's Keybindings and cache tweak
Hey all, I thought I'd share some of my experience with AA (I played it from release to 2.2.1) and have some suggestions to the new guys.
(For the following modifcations you will find the files in your AA System folder)
Cache Size
You can tweak the game engine's cache size. This will prevent excessive loads/unloads and depends on how much memory your PC has.
Open up armyops.ini and look for:
[Engine.GameEngine]
CacheSizeMegs=64
I have 768M RAM and have the cache at 256. I'm not sure of the technicalities of it, but the default of 64 seems pretty low. Pump it if you can but not too much because the game itself needs RAM to run, right?
Sloppy's key bindings & explanation
I know everyone probably has preferences and I'm not trying to impose but I would like to offer my layout as a guide. It is pretty logical and as motion studies have indicated, quick.
You know the in-game key options? IT'S CRAP!!!! Avoid using it if you can. Editting the bindings in the file is much more powerful, allows for multiple keys to do the same thing as well as one key doing multiple things (but not cheating type things).
I don't know how else to do this but to paste the whole damn thing in...
The file to edit is User.ini
[Engine.Input]

-----------------
WTF was that? Well let me break down the important stuff...
Mouse config is based on a 5 button mouse. If you don't have one I strongly suggest getting one!
-Left button is fire
-Right is alt fire (I think the default is zoom, but that gets moved)
-Middle mouse press drops weapon (this makes for FAST weapon shopping or passing grenades to buddies)
-Middle mouse up and down is flash and frag grenades. You use these a lot and often times it helps to whip these out on the move. Smoke is still "3" but you usually don't need to smoke quickly enough to warrant a mouse key.
-Side button (Mouse4) is unbound so it can used for Teamspeak transmit
-Side button (Mouse5) is set to report in (this should be used a lot in game)
Movement setup
-Typical WASD movement setup
-Q & E are the lean keys (leaning is l33t!)
-Shift, ctrl, alt, and C = walk toggle, crouch toggle, run, and prone. All within quick reach of a pinky or finger.
Range
-'0' '-' '=' keys are zero range, decrease range, increase range. These are used for things like RPGs or Stryker zooming. I personally don't even bother. I just point and shoot =P
Important Support keys
These keys are all important enough to be close around the movement keys, they are used frequently and close enough to use without disrupting movement in most cases.
-TAB is now zoom (another possible alternative would be capslock but that always makes for awkwards text comms)
-F is action (open doors, pick up guns, etc)
-R is reload
-G is suppressor (used a lot)
-H is supported fire (used sometimes)
-V is night vision
-B whips out binos
-N is pistol. Yes, it is a good reach on the keyboard, but you only get a pistol if you are a sniper, and if you ever really need it quick... you're probably already dead anyway. better go for a no scope last shot=P
-J Fixes a gun jam and asks for cover
Comms keys
-T & Y are teamtalk and talk
-U is global commo. This toggle is WIERD. Teamtalk is teamtalk in all situations (characterized by green text) and when you are dead talk is white text and both sides can see it. But when you are alive, talk is green and respectively functions the same as teamtalk. Well, how do you talk to the other team when you are alive? You *must* have a key to toggle talk to global commo, and then do a talk. The result is white text and the enemy can read it. Important in all sorts of situations.
-\ is the general commo cycle. I put it out of the way because I tend to use TS or the binds I have on the numpad for most situations
-Numpad keys are all for basic comms and I juiced them up to do hand signals and stuff as well. I customized these to my personality (such as doing a thumbs up when radioing "roger"). --- I would greatly appreciate it if you use these to modify them to your taste!!! --- I don't want a bunch of Sloppy Joe look-a-likes running around =P For a list of what the commos are just to a google search for it (or mayble I'll add to this thread when I'm feeling up to it).
-Arrow keys all four of them are assigned to report in. When in doubt, just slam an arrow key.
Other keys
-K is votekick
-M is medic
-O sets team objective (for leaders)
Phew!

Re: Sloppy's Keybindings and cache tweak
Here are some goods I got off the AA forums!!!
----------------------------------------------
Binding Commo Messages to Keys
<key>=commo<list> | CommoSendMessage <x> where list is radio, shout, whisper, squad, or hand
and x is 1 through 28
Example:
k=commohand | CommoSendMessage 6
Now for you own:
<key>=CommoHand | CommoSendMessage 1
^ Problem with the above is that it leaves the commo mode in CommoHand
Fix:
<key>=CommoHand | CommoSendMessage 1 | CommoRadio
^ but now there's a problem here to. Now it leaves the Radio menu open and you have to hit a key to shut it.
Proper fix:
<key>=CommoHand | CommoSendMessage 1 | CommoRadio | CommoSendMessage 99
This works correctly by sending a bogus commosendmessage to CommoRadio.
Commo List
Each of "commowhisper", "commoshout", "commoradio", and "commoglobal" has an associated chat mode. You can bind these to keys using:
<key>=commowhisper | Talk
<key>=commoshout | Talk
<key>=commoradio | Talk
<key>=commoglobal | Talk
For use with CommoSendMessage x where x is a number listed below
Hand signals
<key>=CommoHand
1 - Move out
2 - Stop
3 - Get down
4 - Look this way
5 - Ready
6 - Double time
8 - Affirm
9 - Negative
Squad Commands
<key>=CommoSquad
1 - Squad, form up!
2 - Squad, spread out!
3 - Fall back! Fall back!
4 - Squad, Open fire
5 - Squad, Cease fire
6 - Squad, Hold this position
7 - Squad, Report in
8 - Squad, Silence! Silence!
9 - Squad, Operate as a unit
10 - There's no I in team
11 - That may be your way, but it's not the army way
12 - What are you doing solider?
13 - Hit the dirt!
14 - Stay down
15 - Grandma was slow but she was old
16 - That don't make no sense at all
17 - Good job soldier!
18 - Great job team!

<key>=CommoWhisper
<key>=CommoShout
<key>=CommoRadio

Re: Sloppy's Keybindings and cache tweak
Some of my keybinds (developed during my initial AA 2.4 play and carried over to 2.5). I need to do more tweaking and tuning but this is the base I've been working with.
(Note: Keyboard is a M$ natural elite ergo one and mouse is a Logitech mx510.)
I have always used "e,s,d,f" rather than "w,a,s,d" for primary movement in FPS games since Doom I days. I like to use my pinky a good bit.
0=ZeroRange # as per Sloppy's suggestion
1=SwapHands
