Re: Tunnel shootout
I think that was me he ran into. That was the first game of radio tower so it was a little confusing. There were three of us at B and he came around the corner and someone shot at him then had to sidestep to reload or take cover and I saw him dodge back into the tunnel so I figure I could get him as hes running but he stopped around the corner and it suprised me and then I ran out of ammo after a shot or two. So I figure Im dead and when he goes to reload I remember that Squid (I think) had equipped us with second rifles so I do the rifle switch and get him. I was supposed to be dead and when it didn't happen I was pretty confused. It is even funnier when you are looking at the facial expressions. "What do we do now?"

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
I don't understand how these settings increased comradery during the game. These settings themselves did not increase comradery, the people playing the game did.

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
Sure, if the players don't want comradery, there isn't going to be any. If they do, there will be. I agree that it's up to the players. No argument from me on that one.
However, the settings indirectly can (I don't say must) induce teamwork. Teamwork is needed to gain aspects of information not readily available in standard mode. Information is, at least I would think, important to succeed. Teamwork is a good recipe for comradery. It may not necessarily result in comradery, but it's a good spark from which to build a fire.
Let me give a specific example of a particular difference involving death messages. Say I shoot at someone across the way who is behind cover. I get a few good shots off and don't see him any more. I think there is a good chance I got a kill but I'm not sure. I'm certainly not going to parade over to that location by myself to check. I'm going to tell my teammates I engaged and may have a kill but need confirmation. And I'm certainly not going to go to confirm the corpse alone, I'm going to ask for help. If the squad leader thinks we can/should investigate then we organize a team or the whole squad to investigate. If death messages were on, all I would see would be "Sloppy Joe kills FriedFish", and this whole teamwork oriented process would not be needed simply because an unrealistic game message gave me the information rather than needing to use skills to get it.
Realism settings are not, at least to my knowledge, being introduced in order to mandate teamwork. They are being introduced to add a dimension of mystery and immersion and "realism" to the game. Maybe communication needs to be stepped up in standards settings, maybe it doesn't. But in order to enjoy "realism", certain functions that the game standardly provide, such as death messages, are no longer available, and must be acquired in-game as one would do IRL, if that information is desired.
The settings don't "force" the team to communicate. If they don't want to, they don't want to. But good luck being successful. The same can be said for regular settings. And yes, the same standards for good communication can be carried over to any settings. It's just that in realism mode, some things taken for granted no longer can be and in order to get the information it's going to need to be gotten. And in order to be gotten effectively and with minimal loss, teamwork becomes important if not vital.
However, the focus really isn't about teamwork, or stepping up communications, although that is certainly an important by-product. The setting are not intended to force comradery, teamwork, objective play, etc. The central idea around the settings are to provide a place for players, such as those who thoroughly enjoyed last nights environment, to play AA as an immersed realistic sim. Straight up..

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
Then I guess I don't enjoy an immersed realistic sim. I had fun, but no more fun than any other night (maybe less?), and all those settings were annoying to me and frustrating. The people made the game fun, not the settings. I gave the realism settings a fair shake, and I didn't like em.
So you guys decided what night is realism night, and I'll make sure that I'm not around on those nights.

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
I'm sorry to hear that it's not enjoyable to you Perry, but I understand your reasons. It's unfortunate that we'll miss you if/when we set the server to realism. Since we're entertaining the idea of running this only once a week, then there's still 6 other times we can look forward to having you around for some good TG games.

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
My apologies Perry. It seems like our dialogue took a turn. I was confused by what you said in your first post. Wasn't sure if you were actually having fun or not. If the settings are annoying and frustrating enough to you to make the game overall unenjoyable for you, that is certainly valid. But I'd miss you playing. I know it's hard to please everyone and sometimes I wish everyone would have fun but that's not always the case. Regardless, I would like you to know that when/if we have realism nights you are always absolutely welcome to play and I hope you don't bar any bad feelings towards me particularly because of this thread.

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
It didn't take a turn, I just decided that I'm not going to go through your posts and dissect them point by point when I'll just come to the same conclusion. I'm not going to convince you that kill messages and scoreboards are good; you're not going to convince me that they're bad. There's no point in spending time & energy trying to do so, so I'll just let it go and play when I'll be happy

Just my $.02, but I like death messages off.
I've played AA and Red Orchestra with them off and I really do prefer it that way. I believe it does induce better teamwork since you don't know if you or your teamate/s actually killed someone till you see the body or they let you know they saw the body drop. I use hotkeyed 'enemy down!' shout (or radio etc where applicable) on pub servers where my team is actually working together a bit. (When you find a pub game where guys actually move together and cover each other it's a joy.)
I'm not a 'turn the whole HUD off' kinda nut since game limitations need to be made up for with some visual representations but death messages and the IFF color change of the crosshair are 2 I wouldn't mind never seeing EVER again in game (so bloody frustrating getting shot through solid smoke, or conversly, quite unfair to shoot someone through smoke just cuz your xhair lit up red...).
Just thinking about this cuz I ran across this thread on the AA forums just now.
Oh wow, I can finally link things in posts. Joy!

Re: Realism Night, please state you opinion.
Come play on a Friday night. I have no problem setting the realism setting if we have a majority of guys wanting to play with the settings. Just so Perry isn't on
