COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

FYI, it appears they unlocked it at Noon Central because I just opened Steam and it is validating my install right now.

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

I guess the steam buddy list would / should work like it does with game joining on buds?

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

pear...close and re-open Steam. I was stuck at 20% for a while and after I did that I got 100% and when I tried to start it, I got the PB and DX9 updates. I think I'm all updated now but when I try to run the game I get 'This game is currently unavailable'.

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

Yeah. Still easier for me then driving into town (we live in a small town outside the Kansas City Metro) but it's a bit frustrating. I'm sure it's because CoD4 has been hyped pretty good and Steam is probably getting hammered.

However, they have released enough 'big-name' games via Steam you would think they could make the process smoother.

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

Steam/Valve always seem too release later in the day. Though it seems like it's not any different than any other company. Most are always vague on what time of the release. This happened with the Orange Box if I remember.

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

Oh, it's released, or at least unlocked. Nothing on the Steam forums saying it won't actually be PLAYABLE until later today.

Re: COD4 - Steam Is Unlocked!

No Luck yet... I read this tho..:

I finally got it working. I'd been having both the initial 'unavailable' error and the missing filecheck.cfg error.

What I did was copy the call of duty 4 folder over to a different drive, told Steam to 'delete local content' and restarted Steam. At that point it told me it was ~70% complete (deleting didn't delete the entire folder). Instead of downloading the entire thing again (hence why I made the backup) I shut Steam down again and copied the previously made backup back over the original folder. Then I restarted Steam and told it to re-validate the game files.

At that point Steam told me the game was 85% downloaded, but instead of trying to downloading the remaining 15% it simply stuck there. I shut Steam down once again, and then ran it again. At that point the Steam didn't label it as incomplete, and ran the game flawlessly.

I had also made sure to uncheck the folder as 'read-only' to make sure that Steam could make any changes necessary.

Try it and see if it works.

Edit: My entire COD4 folder weighs in at 6.25gb and ~310 files. Excluding the DirectX and PB folders (i.e. the game content-centric folders) leaves 221 files at 6.19gb.
