Intel Skulltrail

I've heard of this, but not sure exactly when it's going to be out, or exact details. Anybody got more info on it?

What I've heard so far:
Intel dual-processor Xeon (Quad-core, 45nm, 8 total cores).

Built on a server chipset/board.
FB-dimms.

SLI support (2-way only, or quad with 2gpu boards (like the old 7950Gx2s)), but 4qty PCI-E 16x slots, and supposedly, Crossfire support as well.

So far, the only thing I've heard for the CPUs is the new QX9770 or something like that, it's an Extreme series part and on socket 771 (Xeon socket), 1600FSB. I wonder if it will use lower clocked regular Xeons.
Anybody got info on it?

Re: Intel Skulltrail

They were showing this some at CES show, but will be much bigger at CIBIT or how ever it is spelled, when that show starts 1st week of march. You are looking at spending a crap load of money though.
And considering right now the biggest bottle neck in gaming is the graf. cards, putting 2 mind blowing fast CPUs isn't going to help much.
I read a couple of articles recently where they just tested CPU power buy turning down the graf. settings to like Low, so the graf. card would not be a factor, and ran it through a bunch of games with a bunch of CPUs at different speeds, and they all ran pretty much the same, even the cheaper CPUs.
My q6600 at stock only runs with all 4 cores at 60% or so with crysis.
Don't bet on SLI support. Right now, Intel and Nvidia are not happy with each other, and even though Intel is in full battle against AMD/ATI, they still put crossfire in their MBs. Will probably get even worse too since Intel is supposed to be releasing its own dedicated graf. cards next year from their Larrabee project.

Re: Intel Skulltrail

The NDA on skulltrail just lifted today, and you can check out some reviews here:

If you look at most of the game score FPS, they are all pretty close, which sucks because they are testing from ~$150 CPUs up to ~$1000, and it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Now, Folding@Home and video editing, that is a completely different story.

Here is a really good article from the link above.
