Sound File Editing Software

I am currently working on a production of MacBeth and I need to convert several mp3 files to .wav as well as cut them and adjust sound levels (ie, having them fade in and out). Does anyone know of any (free would be better) software that I can do this on?

Help is much appreciated (and if it's super helpful, I'll put you in the special thanks in our program ).

Re: Sound File Editing Software

Audacity is your best bet. It's free and quite feature packed.

Re: Sound File Editing Software

second for audacity.

I have used Adobe Audition and Soundbooth, Sony, Nero's soundtrax and waveEditor, wavepad, etc.

Nothing is as easy, powerful, and cost effective as audacity. I have mixed Broadway quality shows, studio quality recordings, edited radio interviews, and THOUSANDS of hours of sermons. Audacity wins.

export to mp3, wav, and ogg.

and its free - but it's worth hundreds.

I bought Goldwave years ago. You can try it to see if you like it.

Re: Sound File Editing Software

I want to like Audacity, but it seems to find a thousand ways to irritate the crap out of me. Needing to go into Properties to choose how I want a file saved doesn't help much.

Re: Sound File Editing Software

Thanks so much guys! I'll be working on this tomorrow and it's good to know I won't have to do an hour of searching first.
