Once you grant the government say in what's a proper way to raise kids, this is a natural result. Exposing your own kids to "adult" content is just another form of abuse. Be careful what power you grant to your watchdog.

What i don't understand is that they can google and find whatever obscene things they can online. Removing games from the kids console won't do anything. You have to tell them that this is a game and not real life.

I'm sure the NZ government is working on closing that loophole. And as with China on the subject of government criticism, expect Google to roll over and censor themselves.

A friend of mine worked for Blockbuster Video back when 'GTA San Andreas' first came out. Some kid come into his store to try to buy it, and because of the rating my friend refused, per company policy. So the kid ran out to the car to get his parent, at which time my friend spent five minutes arguing with the Mother over buying the game for her kid. I really shouldn't say argue as more of trying to convince the Mom that the game was not meant for kids, and that is why policy mandates a parent make the purchase, and why he had refused to sell it to the woman's son. All the while 'little Johny' was complaining that 'so-and-so has it and his parents let him have play all the time!'

Well my friend basically told the customer that she was making a huge mistake. Yeah the lady didn't like it that some college kid was telling her how to raise her son, so she ended up going off on my friend demanding a manager and the number to the cooperate office and she was going to see to it that my friend got fired...

Well needless to say my friend was still there years later until he quit of his own accord. He never did hear a peep out of that lady again. Best guess, she went home and saw little Johny beating a cop to death with sex toy and realized she really shouldn't have bought that game after all...

Do we all feel the same way about porn?

If a parent was to come into a porn shop to buy porn for their 8 year old boy or girl we all would be fine with that?

Personally I don't think the federal government should be able to stop a parent from buying anything for their kid. Now the state and local gov's should be able to set these kinds of policies.

And a private company should be able to set it's own policies. If they don't want to sell a video game to somebody for any reason let the free market decide their fate.

I'd be decently alright with that. I'd question the parents' motives for doing so and would privately disapprove, but I don't see a huge problem with letting kids watch most porn. Fetish work might be an exception, but...eh? Its people having sex. How is that so dirty?

edit: Oddly, this view clashes with my general idea that porn is (typically) inherently at least mildly misogynist, fetish work even more so. *shrug*

Yea what i've never really understood is when people say that GTA is a horrible genre because all the sex, not the violence.. Would you rather have sex in video games or violence? Then consider would you rather have people 'learning and practicing'/'provoking them to' (engage in) Sex in real life or violence?

I don't have to "be fine" with it anymore than "I'm fine" with the neighbors letting their kids run around unsupervised in the streets. With the teenager and his riced out Civic roaming the blind corners at 45 MPH, I find one a lot more dangerous than the other.

Which this kind of thinking gave way to draconian blue laws and Jim Crow laws. You have to prove the end result is harmful to the child, which anti-game and anti-porn advocates have yet to do. They quote questionable studies and point to examples like "school shooter played Doom" as proof. This may sway soccer moms, but people with actual knowledge in the field are unconvinced.

What this starts to relate to is "thought-policing." You can't bet on what effects of different mental stimulation will have on different kids. That's where the parents get involved. Kids have been finding daddy's (and maybe mommy's) porn stash for years and were playing violent games well before either industry was widely accepted.

Now, this I agree with as long as it's not in violation of equality laws (like not serving minorities, women, or gays).
