I just got back from like 4 months of not playing Battlefield 2142. When I logged on, I found that a new patch was needed. I installed it and realized... Two new maps shipped with the patch.
I got a chance to play Wake Island and Operation Shingle over the past couple days. All I have to say is... They are amazing. Wake Island essentially combined the two main game modes into one. With the PAC's air superiority actually mattering, I found a refreshing change in pace. The combat was much more intense than most of the large maps. The choke points, not all of which were centered around control points, only amplified this. In my opinion, it was the most innovative of all the maps so far. Not to mention the remixed theme for loading music. I only hope it doesn't become like the NS maps- A great experience that goes largely unused and unplayed on many servers.
I also got a chance to play a few rounds on Shingle. The best way I can describe it is a cross between Camp Gibraltar, Cerebre Landing, and Suez Canal. The open-ness of the small map made communication between squad members even more vital, as you could be hit from literally and direction at any time. The tall buildings made excellent ambush points for defenders, and provided good firing points for rocket squads

The combat is extremely intense, comparable to Fall of Berlin, but with many more options for the attacking team's first move. I liked the return of many memorable structures from other maps, like the tall Command Center from Cerebre, the three-4 level bunker like structures of Gibraltar, and the walkways and towers of Suez. I was pleased to find the tops of the bunker like buildings could be accessed, unlike the pointless tops of the ones in Gibraltar, adding more depth to the defense/offense of a couple points. I have no worries about Shingle going unused; in my opinion, it is an instant classic.
So as a final note, props to DICE/EA for continuing to support a (is it 2, 3, 4?) year old game with updates like 1.5. I'm glad they took the time to make sure this was good, instead of rushing to release it. They could be like most game producers and essentially forget the game once it's released (aside from fixing major bugs), but they continue to enhance their customers' experience. Thanks DICE/EA, you've won me as a permanent 'soldier.'
