My nephew got his first dove last year (http://www.tacticalgamer.com/pictures-screenshots/124569-nephews-first-kill.html).

This year he (at 10 years old) got his first deer. And it is a fine one I must say.

Yankee? They count only one side in the west, both sides in the east. I am pretty sure Oklahoma game and wildlife counts all tines bigger than 1" as a point.

And Boone and Crockett (http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/bc_scoring_typwhitetail.asp?area=bgRecords&type=Typical+Whitetail+Deer) uses both sides, though their calculation is a bit more complicated than just counting the total tines.
