Best way to transfer data

Ok..If I have someone on the road with a laptop and they want to transfer data..ie spreadsheets/pics/word docs etc to a desktop computer when they arrive back in the office..whats the most efficient way to do this?

Peer to peer networking? :? Just plug the two puters together or use a 5 port hub and plug keep the desktop plugged in all the time and then just plug in the laptop when he arrives back at the office?

I'm not sure how your measure efficiency here, but you could do it with a simple crossover cable I think.

Are these networks part of another network, or are they standalone before this effort?

or you could set up a wireless network and syncronize the folders you want to mirror. Whenever the computer is wtthin range of the network and is turned on the data will be mirrored.

That would be the most (time) efficient way. Or maybe you could use a docking station ...

You have so many options. Wireless LAN, PCMCIA network card, IRdA, Bluetooth.

Wireless LAN might be the easiest and most useful in the long run.

If both machines have USB ports, you could get one of them USB storage thingies....

In short:
Gigabit Ethernet the fastest and fairly expensive (Dell ships its newest laptops with onboard 1000/100/10 ethernet cards)
100 mb ethernet the most bang for the buck
802.11b wireless, bluetooth: the least bang for the most buck. You will look slick while you are waiting though.
USB to USB Dial Up networking, slower than ethernet like "laplink"
Null Modem Serial Cable=Slowest, like laplink "we luv the 80's"

A little hub or crossover cable is enough, but does your friend have the ability to map a drive or share a folder? Do they know how to check or change their ip address? That can easily be a source of frustration. XP and 2000 are pretty good at dynamically getting th IP network to function, but it helps to know what they are up to.

This can be a bit tricky on older systems(Win Me and 9x). If they are using Win 9xor ME they may need to install the client for m$ and "file and print sharing for m$"

A really slick thing is a linksys nas, it is a cut down linux-samba deal that has a detailed and easy to follow setup sheet to hoook up client systems. The NAS isn't cheap though.

Finally M$ has a command line utility in their resource kits "Robocopy" which is absolutely fantastic for data transfers
