Battlefield 2 Goes Gold!

The following was announced today on the EA Press site:
This just in from the front lines…Battlefield 2 has officially gone GOLD! The game will begin shipping under the EA GAMES brand starting Tuesday, June 21, 2005.

In Battlefield 2, players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers: the United States, China, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, players can take control of any of the game’s 30+ vehicles. Players can also hone their skills against improved enemy intelligence in the new single-player campaign before competing online with up to 64 players in some of the most intense battles on the PC.

Enhanced team play features allow players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With the new online character ranking and persistence, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals, and more.

Developed by Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, the creators of the original Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2 is rated “T” (Teen) by the ESRB and has an MSRP of $49.99.
Good news for all the Battlefield fans here at Tactical Gamer! The "Official" release date is still not certain. I have gotten conflicting reports from a variety of sources. The BF2 Release Countdown on the front page is based on the WORSE CASE scenario, so hopefully it will be sooner than that!

As a former employee of EB Games, I was under the impression that once a game had gone "Gold" the release date was an almost complete certainty.

Well, from the looks of things it has about 4 different certainties. That's part of the problem!

Last I heard was that it would be at EBGames on the 22nd. I will go the 21st just in case.

As a musician, when something goes gold I expect it to have sold an awful lot. How can you sell a game that hasn't been released? Pre-orders don't count :P

Awesome. Awesome to the max.

I'm still not buying it until I have played the demo (thanks to my BF:V experience), which I intend to do copiously. I trust TG plans to have a demo server?

In the software world it has a different meaning. When a software title goes "gold" it means that a master has been completed and released to the publishing company. It is the point in the development lifecycle when the final release product has been completed and is ready for duplication, boxing and shipping.

Re: Battlefield 2 Goes Gold!

Ya know.. I guess June 21'st is the release date. Although that whole "beginning shipping" bit makes me wonder.

Re: Battlefield 2 Goes Gold!

I'm guessing most of the people here know this, but I might as well say it... When a game has a release date (most of them are tuesdays I think) that's the date in which it will arrive at the store. However, when the title is big enough (the store I worked at did this for Madden and SoulCalibur2) the stores can pay extra and have the title shipped overnight delivery and get it a day earlier, the publishers generally send out copies of games via cheaper non-rushed methods of course. This does not break the street date which states that copies of a game must not be sold before a certain date. So if you have access to it and must have your game a day earlier you can try to have your copy overnighted via online ordering, if you preordered through your local EB/Gamestop/Bestbuy and have not been informed as to whether or not they are going to get the title "early" then they probably won't be getting it in the day before.

Re: Battlefield 2 Goes Gold!

Usually when you buy it by pre ordering it, it arrives 2-4 days past the release date. That happened to me when i bought a new cd online from the band and all my friends had it because they bought it in the stores.

One time that I pre-ordered a music CD I got it the day before it was released. That was great.
