Thumbs up Sunday Night (July 3) Comments

Well I played a couple rousing games of BF2 with you guys tonight and had a great time.

I was suddenly thrust into the Squad leader position for the first time on a TG server on the Karkand map, MEC side. I usually stay away from that position having been a bit intimidated by the excellent job done by ppl like SmokingTarpan etc and not thinking I was up to snuff.

However I decided to give it a shot and I had a great squad. Shout-outs to DanFitzger, Clanless, Twister026, Tysn and Gen.Stryker who all performed splendidly despite my leadership.
I finally got to work under the thumb of Tempus as commander in that map and he did a great job. I was a bit concerned that he wanted us to try and keep that southern-most spawnpoint away from USMC but as I said before my squad did an excellent job. We lost it a couple times , got wiped out quite often by WyzCrak's Arty but we always got it back and held on. I think we ended up winning that map 185-0 and got best Squad to boot! I've never seen MEC win by such a large margin there before.

We played Stalemate next. We didn't face as much action but we got pushed back early and decided to keep the main rear base out of USMC hands. We held off a couple attempts at a takeover and perservered. We then nicked a helo and Twister026 carried us over the map to quickly capture bases and keep USMC off balance. We won that match pretty heftily as well if I remember.

The next map was Peninsula and we gained a new squad member, LethalEskimo. Good lord what a good sniper he is. I'm sure I speak for all of us in the squad when I say that we all felt a little safer with him on a rooftop keeping an eye out . We went in , we captured, we held, we lost, we regrouped and kicked ass some more. USMC put up a vicious fight and Eskimo had plenty of targets. He ended up getting best sniper and I'm not one bit surprised. I gotta say I love these city maps, lots of fierce firefights. We won that map too if I remember tho it didn't look like it was gonna be that way a couple times.

The last map was Cleansweep. I personally dislike this map. Too much flagchasing. We ended up being pinned down in an area quite a bit by constant assaults. (DAMN YOU COBRA PILOTS! ). It was a LONG hard map to keep track of and the score was neck and neck till the end. Was hard to lose by only 1 point in the end (43-42?). You USMC guys are lucky I couldn't find anyone to grenade in the final seconds .

All in all I had a great time as usual with the TacticalGamer Servers. I must say I was kinda disappointed with BF2 Retail when I just got it. Games were laggy, servers were full of TK'n idiots and seeing 20/32 unassigned was a regular occurence. I was actually playing the demo again because I was getting somewhat better games there. But then I saw ur website on someone's sig in the PlanetBattlefield forums and decided to take a look. TG is now my new home and finally BF2 is everything I expected it to be; great matches, great squadmates and great opponents.

Hey, that was a great job last night on Karkand. Holding the south flag was a lot of work, but you guys really came through!

In fact, my entire team did a great job. I think that was the best group of guys I've worked with since I've been commanding. Playing defense is really worth it, as we never lost the bridge, only had a slight scare on the east side, and pretty much controlled the map once squad 5 took the upper west flag.

We're glad you are enjoying the server and the SL position, and I hope to command you again.

Man, I've never seen MEC win Karkland yet, but my playtime is a little limited. Wish I coulda been there, though. Instead I was home playing SP finding out that dogfighting the CPU players is retarded because they always know where you are and you are flying blind (no copilot to spot)

Tempus your the best commander ive ever played under. My squad was holding the bridge with a little help from squad 3's tank. I was hiding under the train the whole game sending some scouts west and south so they could see some more action, our whole team was happy defending under you. Your constant updates really make the difference.

I played about 6 games last night on Server #1, great fun as always. I did find few times when the side I was on, USMC mostly, didn't have a CO for some time at the start. I like being commander, but it can get old. Myself and Wyscrak took turns on 4 consecutive maps.

There were some unresponsive SLs, but for the most part everyone listened. You are always going to have those people who join a squad but don't listen. I need to start bringing up TS and so I have comms with the admins to boot those slackers.

I always seem to be on the other end of Tempus' "God of War" wrath :-(
Tempus I got you once last night. You normally tuck in under a roof somewhere, but once I saw you laying outside a small house. I just had to drop Arty on ya :-)

I concur. It made us know we weren't the only one's fighting our asses off on that map and I noticed any incursions were swiftly dealt with.

We ran around a bit like headless chickens on the next map when he wasn't around till we got another commander.

Yeah it'd be great if we could hear about what was going on on the USMC side for some of those games.

Yeah because they got owned 7 round in a row. It is usually the other way around.

That map was tough. The folks who were awake worked well with me. I appreciate that.

And maybe I'm just having bad luck, but I'll claim that well over half the number of times I've commanded, I've spent a significant amount of my time warning and kicking unresponsive squad leaders. I don't even want to think about how frustrating it would be to command in this game if you didn't run the server and have the power to remove squad leaders who didn't respond.

Is there a way for a commander to tell which soldier is leading a particular squad? I keep having to ask other squad leaders to tell me who's leading squad suchandsuch, so that I can kick him after he fails several times to respond to my requests for acknowledgement. That's very frustrating.

Can you bring up the spawn screen and open the squads up like you are joining the squad. I think that would work but ive never been commander so im not sure if you can do that.

I've never needed to look that deeply as commander, since I use the names next to the chat responses to identify SLs, but I am sure that Enter will do the trick.

Hitting TAB will still bring up the score screen. Not sure if it shows squad leaders though. If I get a "no, sir", I check their name in the chat text and ask them if they have a better plan. Usually they will have what they think is a good reason for disobeying. For example, some SLs get paranoid about being pinned by forces they mistakenly think are superior. I will often place a UAV or do a zoomed spot to make it clear that it's safe to move out. Likewise, I will do the same for a squad who get itchy feet and feel they should attack a new flag before clearing the current one.

I'm trying to figure out a faster way to identify (that is, ID) SLs who don't respond at all. The scoreboard doesn't show the SL, to my knowledge.

I will check next time I play, but I distinctly remember bringing up the spawn screen while being CO by pressing Enter. I find that voicing a query to all SLs using "V" will almost always get a response either by voice or text. Asking something like "Squad 4, any reason for the change of plan?" usually gets a response (although not always the one I want to hear ). If that fails, a typed team chat request might help. Peer pressure will sometimes spark them to co-operate.

Having said this, I haven't commanded as often as you, so I likely didn't run across the whole spectrum of SL antics.

i was playing as a usmc squad leader when we got owned on karkand.

the squad was doing an awesome job of taking orders and staying together, it just seemed like whenever we tried to move on a point, we'd be outnumbered by a defending force that would just mow anyone down who approached. sucked. and when i tried to stay out of it (tried...i like to shoot stuff), i'd always get taken out by artillery or an enemy behind us.
