Mystery deaths?
Hey guys,
This happened a few days ago, but I haven't seen any posts on it, so I thought I would start it up. On the 32 player Clean Sweep map, the MEC team has their base in the southwest. It has the artillery guns at S, E, and N of the flag (from memory). The UAV trailer is on the ground NW of the flag, and above it on a ridge is an art and the radar. One day, my USMC squad was doing a great job defending that base after we took control of it. We were there to destroy the enemy commander assets and keep them down, and we did so for the entire game. Where it get strange is sometime in the middle of the game. People on our team started dying every time they went up near the radar on the ridge. At first I thought they were getting picked off by a sniper, but then we all noticed the death message was "is no more". I was curious, so I ran up on the ridge toward the radar and boom, when I got close, "ickyp is no more". I repeated two more times, jumping and sprinting as I went, and found the same result each time. The total number of deaths on the team from this was about 8, and we never found a cause. Was this death by misadventure, or death by sniper with no appropriate kill message, or something else? Perhaps it was RF radiation exposure from the radar unit? Any ideas? My only other theory was that maybe the CO on the other team was a pissed off person with RCON access, and he really wanted his scanner intact. :P I do remember that he was very persistent with dropping supply crates on the stuff. |

Re: Mystery deaths?
I can't see any reason for that happening. An admin should not have been doing it, and I can't see anything in game that would do it.
Hmmm..

Re: Mystery deaths?
The SOPs will tell him nothing. On Clean Sweep, the MEC has no UCBs, so there was no possibility of violating that rule.

Re: Mystery deaths?
Possible map glitch? Did you try approaching from the same angle every time? There might be an "undefined" area somewhere around there, and that's what's killing you.
A few nights ago I had a mystery death, but I figured it out quickly. I was just standing around a base, waiting for orders from the CO. Then, suddenly, I died. Naturally I looked up at the death message list to see which sniper got me. All it said was "SmokingTarpan was killed". Then I noticed it; an ally started moving away right from where I was standing. I'm certain that he spawned right on top of me, and I got killed for it. |

Re: Mystery deaths?
Ya, it isn't a UCB and we were doing a very good job of keeping the artillery, UAV, and Scan down. There is no law against this, nor should there be. The MEC should defend their most valuable base. Even on TG servers, you see people make the same mistakes over and over, where everyone spawns at forward bases and leaves themselves wide open for flanking.
I suspect maybe a map glitch. I did approach from the same way every time. I tried to experiment by going to the other side of the ridge to get in from there, but I ran into enemies down at the other side and it ruined my plan. I certainly have seen many people running back and forther over that ridge at other times with no problems. |
