Why didn't anyone tell me...

Commanding is just as fun as the rest of the game?

Tried my hand at it for the first time last night. Was a small game, I think maybe.. 18 people? However more importantly, neat! Quite fun. And those folks on the server at the time, thank you for your patience. Supplies == Fixing Assets! Wowser! Who knew? Now to read up on commanding to try my hand at it again until I'm actually quality. Hopefully my frantic use of the command screen helped out in your awesome defense movement and attacks.

Good! We need more commanders.

I'm glad you had a go TwelveTwo. So many people are too scared to try the CO position. It was a bit of a whack-a-mole game with few players left on the server, but fun nonetheless.

Hopefully, you will come back and do it again

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Root: Welcome to TG. Feel free to punctuate your sentences correctly. Monkerz: Its gonna take all my skills to beat those boys off in the future.

Re: Why didn't anyone tell me...

You know, it's more economic to fix the assets yourself usually than it is to drop supplies on them. Also, if you drop supplies somewhere and soon after happen to get ready to lose the flag, have your guys destroy the crate-no use in letting the enemy have it and be able to just keep going instead of having to pause and recoup.

I love commanding, last night I commanded a battle on Karkland on the 64 player server that went from a close game to a 100+ ticket win (I think it was like 194-0). Apocalypse had been commander but life called him away, we didn't have a CO so I stepped in. I don't know how well I did, I'm not that used to commanding, but we got the enemy out of the main area (due mostly to extremely talented squads) and bottled up across the water. Then I had 4 of the squads defend that river and the crossing, and had two squads doing roving patrols whenever someone would sneak though. Since the trains protect you from arty more than the MEC water-front, I'd rain down artillery on them as soon as they started a mass assault and kill them off while my guys had to hunker down. I love the multi-tasking of commanding, but it is intimidating since so much is riding on your shoulders and there are so many really good commanders here. One thing I'd like more of, from a CO perspective, is actual requests for arty, supplies, etc. I'll give you plenty of orders usually, but I don't always know when you in particular feel you need a uav or supplies. arty usually goes towards massed troops, but request it, if I turn you down it's not because I'm not listening, but I see a better target. The same with a UAV-just because I put the UAV somewhere else doesn't mean I'm not paying attention to you. If I put the UAV down somewhere I expect people to be able to find and kill things themselves, I'll put down the UAV and then go watch over you guys in 3x and spot out enemies. Anyway, that's my method, maybe not the best, but I'm learning.

Re: Why didn't anyone tell me...

Played two more games as commander. I think I'll likely play CO when I can. We won both, due to me or not due to me. And one detail, Karkland map only looks simple. Man. I figured the trick would be to fall back and hold the bridge area but it still was a close game. Next time I'm going to focus on the roads on that map as I started to do later in the game. I'd enjoy feedback on my commanding for those that were SL during those two games.

(Addendum: Wtf was up with that broken flag on that first map?)

You did really well tonight TwelveTwo, thanks for keeping us informed of what was going on. It was pretty funny to walk in a room and see you staring at nothing in the corner.

he was bad, in the time out corner hehe

i also today tried out commander, gulf of oman 64 players. we won, but i havent a clue if it was because of me, i got like 4-10 arty kills I simply kept my troops up with supplies and UAV. if anyone could tell me if i did a good job or not would be appreciated. personally, i much rather be a SL then a CO. I like being in the battle and making decisions on assualting something rather then dropping supplies.

i think i did fine i believe that 3 things commanders need to have

1. squads that say "squad # requests _____" it sucks when you have people talking and have no idea who they are.
2. making requests on the map, meaning on my commanders map i see a yellow "supply drop here" symbol with a "accept/reject", much easier
3. squads that tell you their current situation. im commander, all i see is numbers and dots, its amazing helpful when a squad says "well we have this and that coming from these directions can you send another squad for support" i love that, good confident SL make the game =)

Hahaha, that was pure chaos! It was my squad that took that flag and was able to keep spawning there after we lost it. Spawning right next to an enemy was simply crazy!

i wasnt squad leader, but when you commanded mashtuur you seemed to have your squads spread out in a great way. when we had the enemy at ticket bleed, you didnt waste squads attacking and instead defended each base just enough. The few times we ourselfs were bleeding you managed to send the right squads to the right CPs and we got it all back under control. It was also a good strat to keep my squad at the middle the whole game- i think if you hadnt done that wed have lost without the middle the whole game.

Re: Why didn't anyone tell me...

Well, I commanded twice more times. I learned that fancy tactics are stupid. Sorry to all those as Squadleader where I was telling seemingly nonsensical commands to. Leaving everyone to play merry-go-round with the various flags. Also a side note, it may be important when one runs an "air support" or similar squad to notify the commander. I'm at least not one to check the points and the squad names and on the commander list it just gives me numbers. Though perhaps I should just start asking what the current squad focus is.. Hmm..
Well that is me thinking aloud...

Anyhoo, nice game and that somewhat relaxing 5 v 5 game on a 64 map. Took out all your flags and spawn points. Too bad one of your teammates escaped my artillery fire on his route out. Give him a medal, was quite a return.

Re: Why didn't anyone tell me...

My favourite commanding moment was teh wetlands on the 48 player map. Playing as the MEC I the squads defend the hill that everyone wants anyways and worked to get all the flags, to begin with. Actually came damn close taking all the flags that we could but losing the flag closest to the MEC main base. That was time for a tactic change.
I abandoned the flag closest to the USMC UCB. Got my squads to continue defending except for one squad that I had recap the flag closest to the MEC UCB, after they all but abonded the base.
After that my squads were able to capture and hold all the flags with the exceptions of the USMC UCB and the closest flag to their UCB. But that is exactly what I wanted.

Got my squads set up defending choke points out in the open. Bridges and fords (land bridges). There are only two of them. Well 2 sets, bridge and ford close together.

Worked liek a charm.. Once we cleaned up some stragglers trying to flank the middle flag we just held those 2 points and took the game.

Of couse I made HUGE use of that scan button

Commanding with good squads is a blast.
