No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

http://files.filefront.com/BF_2_Anti.../fileinfo.html

Video clip I found on the Planet Battlefield forums showing how poor the AA missles are.. With hit detection like that, it's no wonder the AA missles sometimes feel useless.

Believe me, as a Jet pilot, I've felt this pain over and over and over. From both ends of the missiles.

BTW - the music in that video is one of my FAVORITE songs. It's a remix of BT's "Never Gonna Come Back Down." SWWEEEEETT.

I don't think it's a hitbox problem. The 50 cal/Jet guns don't experience it and he didn't have any trouble hitting the OTHER helicopter.

It looks like it locked onto the friendly helicopter but reported locking onto the enemy helicopter. I bet the missiles do the same thing to jets.

The fact that the missiles passed straight through the enemy helo indicate that it is a hitbox problem. Regardless of which helo they locked on to, this is what is questionable.

Re: No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

lol that was an awesome video...

I am practicing AA guns lately... haha... I find it useful to hit the chopper when they are not facing you... Sides, back work great to shoot em down... And theeeen... I also found when a bomber jet is flying in to bomb you it is a guaranteed jet kill when shoot em...

Anyway AA guns are not that useless. Just spend some time on it...

Watch out for me shooting you guys down.

I've survived precisely that scenario several times, on purpose.

Re: No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

My experience with AA station:

Target Hit Success (sample size: ~30 trials)

- Short Range: 0% (even if target doesnt use flares)
- Mid Range: ~10-20%
- Long Range: ~40-50% (higher if target doesnt use flares)

EDIT:

Conclusion: Hit success increases significantly if AA missiles are used in long range.

I wonder how many times the AA misses that it actually hits a friendly though. I swear I end up hitting allied aircraft with those AA rockets/stingers about half the time.

oh, I forgot to mention then, when I said "target hit" I meant "friendly casualty"

joking...

well, in almost all cases, I avoided to launch one if there was a friendly air unit in sight...

I'm not a big fan of the AA emplacements. You were vulnerable before you got in it and you're still just as vulnerable inside. It doesn't work well close up and especially so if the aircraft is moving towards you. I'd like to see them beefed up a bit more.

Re: No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

I actually find the AA ground missiles very good. I can hit most birds, you just have to wait a little bit and make sure you have a nice lock on. I see some guys that just jump on and fire within like 2 seconds. That's not even enough time to get a lock on, even if the bird is stationary and very close to you. So make sure you get a lock on, wait a little bit, and shoot. Also only shoot when either the plane is pretty far away or stationary, you won't get one flying right above your heard at high speeds doing all kinds of evasive maneuvers, like I see some people trying.

Re: No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

good tips Maranhao,

wait in lock tone, pilot will use flares... when flares disappear, it is time to launch...

Re: No wonder I can't shoot down helicopters

In that video, I'd say he either fired the missles without a loc and mid flight they locked onto the farther away friendly craft, or he was locked on to it the whole time.

I have had regular sucess with AA. I don't linger in them. I get in, line up my shot, wait for flares, relock and fire, get out. If you miss, I good pilot will come back and kill you if you're still there. You also have to pick your time to shoot. Don't shoot at jets that are going across your field of view a full speed, also don't shoot when they are just at the edge of your view distance. The best time to shoot seems to be when they're occupied with something else, another frienldy aircraft, another ground target, whatever. Sometimes just keeping the lock and not fireing is helpfull, since after a while the pilot is going to relax when those missles don't come flying. Best time to hit him now.

Also;

shoot your rockets when the jet is outbound (i.e. from his back)
