more questions

how do I get my minimap ingame to look like the minimap in BF editor, its just a grey blob, but in Bf editor when I press show minimap its my actual map, no grey blob

I would probably think there is a better (more in the editor) way of doing this but this guy has a work around, if you got the plugins to open up .DDS files

This quote gives the main idea:

Your ingame minimaps are supposed to be here:

/Battlefield 2/mods/[your mod]/Levels/[your level]/Hud/Minimap

within this folder you should have by default:

* commanderMap.dds
* commanderMicromap.dds
* ingameMap.dds

By default these maps are dummies, meaning they are grey duds not displaying anything related to the map you created.

Required: You will need Adobe Photoshop or any other GFX-Tool capable of creating .dds-files (I used PS7)

Ah, its good to know I can make the files significantly smaller.

I had simply been copy/pasting my editor "minimap" file into the minimap folder and renaming it "ingameMap" - It's really easy but it also means you get the pleasure of using a massive file. ;P


- One problem I have been having with my map (which is heavily laden with buildings) is that the minimap will not show all of the buildings. In fact it is showing only about 10-15% of them. I have switched to the hemimap render option and that helps a bit, but then most of the remaining buildings are "choppy" and missing sections.

Anyway, I don't really care too much about this yet. I'd still place my level at only about 50% completion. (It's all in the details.)

I have yet to get a map ingame. However from reading other forums posts its funny how the same level will work on some users PC and not others. So it makes me happy that perhaps its not my map. Though it is frustrating.

I posted over here regarding my problem as theres a couple of EA bods on this fourm collecting BETA information.

If you want to decent GFX package, I can't recomend GIMP enough, probably one of the best art packages out there and its free.

Though get the windows version from here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
You'll need to install GTK+ 2 for Windows first which has a link from the above website under the download section.

you can get a DDS plugin for that(this allows you to edit the ingame map:

I'm still trying to get RAW files(Bf2's terrain files) working in GIMP.

Nigel: Try opening your game in windowed mode. (Edit your shortcut so it has "+menu 1 +fullscreen 0" at the end.)

Then when your level crashes you will get an error dialog instead of a silent CTD. With the info there you may be able to fix your problem. If you would like my help just post the full error message here and I'll do what I can. (My level occasionally gets a problem which generally seem to be linked to issues with how/where the editor is saving stuff. All it has taken to fix so far is manually editing the .con files.)

Thanks for that tip on editing the con files, I compared may Gameplayobjects.con file with a maps that came with the came, and deleted the appropriate and added the appropriate so they matched (relative to each map though i.e. my base name instead of their base name ). I ran the game and got no errors but it was still crashing on clicking join.

After advise on the Semi-offical BF2 editor, I turned my details all to medium(from low) and it loaded. My Terrain in the distance still looks like a chess board but at least it loads. So please

Even more pleased when running round the map it actually felt how I thought it would feel when I was designing it

So you can only load maps on medium? Thats kinda stupid....

Yeah its probably something that they'll fix in the full release. There seems to be many cases where some people can load maps and others can't.

However on examining the CON files the editor puts so much more into these con files than the original maps have.

My exmaple hoistminmax problem that I have isn't even mentioned in the offical maps con file.
