Is the Private Server really necessary?
I'm just wondering...
The member only server is always empty. I'm wondering if this is not a loss of hardware... sitting there doing nothing. What if it was public, with 32 players slots and map size? Or maybe smaller? Or I don't know... What do you think? Cheers! |

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
The private server can be configured any way you guys want.. It's your server after all.
What would you like to see with it?

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
Also TG teams use it for private practices. They need a server that they can control and use without interruption from outside parties. Although I guess there would be no harm in making it a public server outside of the scheduled private use times.

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
With the amount of "SM members requesting slot on server one" I bet that both servers would be filled if SM joined the smaller server and waited a bit. Once 5 or six guys joined (and the server was on an urban map), I bet it would fill right up.

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
I'm thinking that maybe running AAS on Server #2 might draw some of the SMs over there that like that style of game. It certainly couldn't hurt!

I think this would be a great way to get custom maps out to the community, and it would reward the map-makers to know that people are actually going to have a look at their maps. This could hopefully encourage those so inclined to produce higher quality maps. Maybe I'm running away with myself now, but I think you get the idea. Lastly, if you think another thread would benefit from this idea, feel free to repost it in that thread. I know that the under-use of some of the different servers in TG is a current topic of discussion, and I haven't seen this idea presented.

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
Yeh server 2 is a waste more than the private server as the private serves some very specific but useful purposes.
I vote and have already voted that we should use server #2 for mods, maps, etc. What would also help server #2 is having a dynamic script to change the map size downwards based on the pop. Its just no fun to be the first people into an empty server as it could take and hour to build up to critical mass.

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
I definitely like the idea of using server #2 for real mods or even simple server-side mod experiments. It needs to draw a minimal crowd in before the general public will jump on.
The dynamic CP removal based on population script would IMO be a very good start. As always, my services are volunteered to help make it happen.

I agree with you. Especially since BF2 only has 12 levels, while even BF1942 began with 16 and added a new one every few months. But I think that when it comes to map testing, it's very important to arrange the rounds ahead of time to absolutely ensure you have a large number of players. Because if you only had 16 people on trying out the map, how would you know whether it was lame because of the map or because there were too few players? Considering the popularity of the Wed/Sat PW nights, I think it would be feasible to get at least 40 players on at once, if the map testing were arranged ahead of time and prominently announced. |

Re: Is the Private Server really necessary?
I vote for AAS on server #2 as well. It would seem to be the most logical mod at the moment since it requires no client download.
