Nearly gave up BF2 last night (Dolphin Diving!)

Was playing a 'friendly' clan game last night...

I have to say I didn't really understand what the term 'dolphin diving' was until I saw it being most ably demonstrated by these guys (who shall remain nameless)..

They even - for the most part - despensed with guns, but dived and hopped towards you with knives!

Now, I admire thier dexterity and gaul. They obviously had a game plan and they stuck to it (and in fact totally hammered us 3-0).

But this isn;t sour grapes -

I play BF2 because I like to play a game which simulated the modern battlefield and infantry tactics.

Someone leaping up and down towards you, knife in hand, does not - IMHO - constitute a realistic simulation of infantry tactics.

They were even coming at us in groups, with knives out, and never having seen this tactic before used on mass, we were completely unaware of the best way to counter it!

But we were not about to do the obvious thing and replicate this sort of play...

It got so bad that half way through the second match I was starting to reach for the escape key and go back to a civilized game like Ghost Recon! LOL

Really - EA/DICE needs to do something about Dolphin Diving - it just looks stupid and spoils what is a fairly good representation of modern warefare (for a game that is!).

I mean what next - zero gravity with bouncing tanks???

I might as well be playing Unreal Tornament.

Rant over - sorry.

(Can I just say that a while back we played you Tactical Gamer guys, and while you also spanked us, it was a pleasure to have lost to you because you were a) real gents about it, and b) played in a mature fashion (no bunny hopping/dolphin diving, etc).

Easy, grenade launcher. Get those fools hot on your tail and blast them all. Works wonders on guys who are trying to knife you, trust me

Why not just give up on playing BF2 on lame servers or with lame clans?

That's what most of us have done. I would not bother playing on a public server for anything. It's not BF2 if it's not TG-BF2.

Well - our server/clan is a good mature clan and good server. Trouble was that this was an 'invitational', and we had never met these guys before.

But you are quite right of course, and in a way it was our fault for not finding out more about these guys before we played them.

Also I have suggested that we have a set of 'game rules' that both sides must OK before playing...

I think you guys have something like that don't you?

Re: Nearly gave up BF2 last night (Dolphin Diving!)

Tempus - I think DMw were hit with the same sort of thing we faced against HOC. I mean we knew about bunny hopping and c4 car bombs, but HOC opened our eyes a bit.

Seems like the BIG & DMw guys were confronted with the same sorta thing. Unfortunately without having access to a clan's BF2 rules/forums it can be very hard to judge what sort of style they go for.

Sorry to hear you guys had such a crap time, but at least it's insipration for another badge eh?!

mow them down with a machine gun, snipe their butts with M95s, send a touchdown pass with a M203, shock their hearts with defibs (ive seen it has a longer range than a knife), run the over with buggies, oh and before i forget send them to the sky with arty.

Yeah, isn't that sad. They said they will fix so many bugs in the upcoming patch but this issue will stay untouched till the next patch (or later). I really wonder what they were thinking when they designed this (why havign a stamina bar if you can still jump around like a bunny when being at minimum stamina?!) and don't intend on changing it yet. :P

Go Engineer. Shottie to the face trumps dolphin diving.

It's simple. The guys at DICE are all bunny hoppers/dolphin divers.

Re: Nearly gave up BF2 last night (Dolphin Diving!)

Yea, the dolphin diving is crap and is just taking advantage of a weirdness in the game engine. I think going prone and having perfect accuracy immediately is also a problem, but not as big / funny looking as the dolphin diving. I guess the only thing you can do in the future is to investigate your opponents - play a round or two in a public server with/against them - and see if they are the type of group you wanna play against.

TG should be proof that you don't need to resort to such lame tactics to win

That is my biggest gripe. There are a lot of players on TG servers recently who use that tactic and i think its pretty frigging lame. You're using a problem in the AI to compensate for your lack of skill. But as always you adjust and learn to deal with it. As a sniper ive learned to anticipate when they will do that to me and put a nice quick headshot in them while they are laying on the ground all vulnerable but w/ super accuaracy.

Playing so much on the servers I even know which lamers (will remain nameless) like to use that tactic and am more than ready to have them paint their own bullseye on their heads for me.

Insta-proning doesn't bother me nearly as much as CQB grenade launchers, but sometimes you just have to suck it up and soldier on.

Well as much as I dislike the practice in battle, I love to do it on top of people I've just knifed or killed or watched get killed. It must make waiting for respawn so much more fun, either that or really frustrating. =) Someone dubbed it the Phelan Dance.

Jump and prone on their bodies, it looks rediculous.

Re: Nearly gave up BF2 last night (Dolphin Diving!)

In my experience, it is easier to lead a prone jumping target rather than an erraticly sprinting one. I understand, respect, and follow the rules against it on this server, but do not agree that it gives a player an unfair advantage. I come to TG for the team play experience, but the rules on inappropriate movements are abstractions and I wouldn't mind if they were removed. I can kill a bunny hopper just as easy as anyone else.

A person sprinting can go left or right, a person who just jumped only has one way to go: down. Not to mention accuracy is at worst during a jump even if you are prone halfway during flight, until you land and stop moving. And a grenade in the face is going to kill you faster than most other guns no matter how a person moves.

Re: Nearly gave up BF2 last night (Dolphin Diving!)

You can compensate for bunnies and dolphins at long range, but I personally have a lot of trouble hitting members of such a menagerie once they close to near medium or melee range. That fight usually ends in a suicide grenade.

i think the technical term for this is "corpse humping"...
