Battlefield 2 update from EA...?

Is it just me or is anyone else wondering where the f**k is the BF2 update from EA that was promised by the end of August but was postponed?

BF2 is a great game but is has problems that would need fixes asap and it just seems that EA doesn't care, have resources to pull thourgh this update or are incompetent in this matter. I just hate the current server browser for example... and all the lagging in connection to servers and the long loading times and so on just to mention a few issues.. just annoys me.

Every official answer I've seen about the patch release date has always been "when it's ready". Their expansion is scheduled for November, so I'd expect the patch sometime before that.

I understand it will be the first week of October. We'll see if they make it.

When it's ready. Isn't that what they said about "Duke Nuke 'em Forever"?

I did a software release this morning. It was almost 2 weeks later than planned. Some of it went untested because we couldn't delay any longer. It didn't fix all of the known problems with the product. It definitely contains bugs which will annoy some, but most people will get the functionality they need.

I am also eager to see a patch from DICE.

Because those bastards are working on the expansion. BF2 is a great game, but only 70% of what it should be. How come valve always tweaks CS and DOD monthly, while it takes EA months for a routine patch.

Thats why I'm not buying the expansion.

Steam is an excellent way for Valve to be able to release small updates without overly frustrating the gaming community. It's easier just run the hldsupdatetool on a Steam server to update the code than it is to need to find and download the latest patch, copy it to the server, install, reconfigure the server and then re-start.

Valve can seamlessly update clients and servers with only MINIMAL inconvenience to the players and server operators through Steam. Not something that can be easily done with conventional patches.

Re: Battlefield 2 update from EA...?

Yea, but you still need an internet connection just to play HL2 SINGLE PLAYER. That does not fly with me, therefore I do not like steam (at least the way valve implemented the system)

I played HL2 single player on my laptop last week without any Internet connection whatsoever. So I don't understand what the argument is.

You apparently DO have an Internet connection as you are able to play BF2.

There's a discussion going on right now on the AGHLCS newsgroup about Steam. I've found that most of the people that rant about it need to make up circumstances in which they wouldn't like Steam or in which they would have a problem with Steam when those issues don't exist in the first place.

When you fire up Steam without an Internet connection it simply asks you if you want to run in Offline mode. You say yes and go about your merry way of playing HL2.

Re: Battlefield 2 update from EA...?

I bought HL2, a game I don't really like (shooting aliens isn't my thing) for its mods and because I really liked the steam model. I think the stem model is the future of content delivery as apo has pointed out... the days of a game being released and never updated are over. The consoles drove much of that model, but even these bastions of static content are going to include dynamic and organic contect through their respective live services.

I think you will see much more movement this way in the future as XBOX360 proves vendors can make money selling micro services (game content) over time to an existing engine.

Re: Battlefield 2 update from EA...?

Huh, well must have been some other issue. I didn't have internet a few weeks ago and tried to play HL2, I did connect in offline mode and refused to launch the game because it could not authenticate.
