Talking IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

After playing about 4 hours today on our server... I believe we need to password it to get any real tactical enjoyment out of this game...

When not busy, only a few on or so...then leave it open for practice and fun...

but I ran and observed the same problems today that has ruined this game in the past... high level, good players, join then run off on there own to get a good spot and kill... no teamwork what so ever... then someone asks a Q. or makes a routine comment about the game and these same high level gamers verbally attack them... wrong answer on my shift... I had to kick one today... pure donkey, just did it on purpose to get people pissed... he was a honor 82, and was talking how he hates theirs game, it sucks, another free game gone to hell... lol HONOR 82, you've just found out you don't like it, lol...

maybe leave open in day, then evening around 6 P to midnight, passworded... just a idea... feedback welcome.

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

You will hear no complaints from me about this idea. Obviously, we need enough porosity in the server to allow potential 'TG ideal' players to discover us, but the goal should be PW protected games for TG (with autobalance *off* in private mode... we need to be able to retain unit cohesion for in-house squads). It's the only way, short of aggressive policing of the server to keep the gameplay aligned with our values.

Regardless of open/PW status, we need some rolling server messages detailing our rules (no bunny hopping; teamwork/following orders *mandatory*;no rambos; etc), and to point people to TG to learn more in detail. I think that due to many similarities to CS, looking to our rules for that game might be a good place to start.

Anyway, rambling here. The fact the TG now has an honor server means that we're going to attract players, both in house and public. We need to cater to TG, not the pubbies, while attracting the rare TG-quality pubby to join us.

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

It was funny watching the people try to bunny hop last night.. No matter what the developers do to nerf the hopping, people still do it! And, yea, the whiners.. "This game sucks" -- then why are they playing??

While we're talking about following orders, how do I quickly and easily find my fireteam leader in game? I've noticed the team leader with the little Capitan-looking bars on the SF maps or the Seargent stripes on normal maps, but I've not been able to find my fireteam leader.

New to the game...as you all know. It rocks. Agree on the PW idea, at least when we get a good number of TGer's involved. What I have observed is that no one except TGer's is working together toward objectives. Most are just hunter/killers.

But when a handle of TGer's are on with TS to coordinate the game is a blast and much more realistic and tactical than BF2.

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

I will be working on a AA SOP in the next day or two, then will get Apophis to approve it and sticky it.

As for that scrolling text, I never liked that because 1) it cause lag to some, 2) it takes up real comms spots, and 3) no one follows it anyway....

My idea is to make the SOP, and then call for the Admins to watch... if they see a high ranking player join then go run off on there own to get a bunch of kills, politely ask using the in game instant messenger feature to stick with his assigned team, (top right, should say what team your in, then you just follow where your team leader goes in the top HUD, unless your the leader then you'll have the next highest ranking person shown.), if he continues to refuse... a simple bye bye kick.

In the SOP I will explain how all that works and why, (you do know you fire better when near your team leader? right?)... I would like to see the team dedication like it is in BF2... but without being to strict or pushy with the rules... we will see... work tonight, then off on a 4 day weekend, so I will be getting some good kill time, lol

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

Passwording the server during the evenings, even if we only get 5 or 6 people on the server, will allow us to slow down the play and learn. I had a real hard time figuring how what to do and where people come from and all that last night - I think we all did. As soon as I thought I had a little strategy worked out it was time for a map change

The game supports hand signals, but I've never used them and have never even thought to look at my fire team leader for them. I'd like to try them out when several other TG players are around so we can see just how effective they actually are. Have you used them before Magnum50? Do they really work?

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

yes, and no... yes I've used them... there cool to watch, and make great footage for gameplay videos, lol... but most others wont see them, or follow them...

The best thing to do, besides using teamspeak (which would be the BEST method), is to go into your settings and set your comms channels for 7, 8, 9, 0, -, and = (next to your weapon select buttons... then you can pick which ones to use... I mainly use the team radio comms... you hit the assigned button, mines 9 I believe... a menu comes up and you click a menu to say what you want over the radio for your team to hear... like "cover me", "Stop", Enemy Sighted", "West", "Up"... etc ect...

you can also use whisper, then only people immediately next to you can hear what you say.... or yell, which is everyone including the enemy hears you, lol... not good.

or do what I do, when I don't play on teamspeak... I have game commander, lol, it's a utility that lets you say word like "Enemy Down"... and it will repeat the keys and say it in game...

I did notice the option in this new version of AA, to have in game voice over IP comms, like BF2... has anyone tried this yet?

My thoughts on this is: one server, you are the GO, do what you think is necessary to protect your vision of the game.

I won't quibble about a password one bit.

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

Maybe we need a few training sessions so the slower players, like me, can have an environment to learn in. Then come up with password nights like we have for BF2.

I've noticed text-to-speech in the menu options, but haven't figured out how it works or what it does. I didn't see anything about VOIP like BF2 or CS has though.. In fact, on the AA forums there is a huge thread discussing whether VOIP would be good for the game or not, with alot of people thinking it would be bad

I'm no expert, but I think using TS is a must. In fact, I probably wouldn't have too much fun without it...if we are going to op as a squad then let's do that. No problems with voice here. Training night would be good!

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

I agree with Perry about his assessment of available voice options. Text-to-speech only (whatever that is). No in-game VOIP.

TS - crucial.

Yes, pls password. It was full today when I wanted to play. Couldn't get in. Sucks, cuz I'm an SM. Do I have to hook something up, like with BF2?

Re: IMO: need it passworded...sometimes...

I was on for 5 hours today... and on our teamspeak... if you ever need in, let me know... I'll make the room for SM.

Any one of the admins can immediately password it when we get a full team of TG gamers... then un-password it when done... that might be the best... we will still need a password assigned, just in case it shows up passworded.
