TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

What can I say but GGs to everyone involved in the first BF2 TG scrim. I had high expectations and quite a bit of preparation going into the scrim, and it definitely exceeded those expectations. Here's a quick re-cap of the action my squad saw over the three games:

Game 1 - Oilfields
Squad 1 was kind of all over the place on this one, assaulting literally every CP on the map. We had a few good takedowns of flags throughout the map, but struggled with assaulting others, while on defense we did pretty well, holding off a few hard and fast attacks by the 42nd (I think?), before losing the NW CP right before the end of the game to them.

Game 2 - Mashtuur
My squad was tasked with defending the south mosque throughout the game. The plan went very well initially, holding the MEC across the river. A highlight of our initial defense was using JMJ's C4 method to take down 5 guys at once on the flag. At one point, they punched through and took both the mosque and backyard, and we were on our heels trying to get it back. Eventually we got it back, and were able to hold the MEC to the west for most of the rest of the game, despite some heavy attacks.

Game 3 - Oman
By far the hardest objective of the night for my squad - we were in charge of defending the river fort by the USMC arty. Right off the bat, we got hit with arty and attack chopper, along with APC's. A highlight of the initial attack was Strikeman taking down the attack helo from the tank stationed by the warehouse. After surviving the first couple rounds of that, their attention shifted and we were left relatively alone for about 10 minutes. We were even talking about how we scared the attackers off, and might have it easy the rest of the game. Then came the apocalypse. HUGE waves of coordinated arty, attack helo, armor (tank + APCs) and infantry hit us. Over and over. I think we fought off at least 6 or 7 waves over the last 35 minutes of the game. At one point they had the flag white, but with some APC assistance from another squad, we kept it from turning MEC. Huge props to Ultrablue, Jaymind, Dustermahn and Strikeman for the single best defense I've seen yet in BF2. Also, thanks Marstein and Redleg for your work in Daqing and Mashtuur. I just hope that no other team that any TGers play against bring it as hard as the alliance brought it tonight.

Outstanding games everyone - tonight is a prime example of why I come here and why I play Bf2. Hoo-ah.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Can I add my stuff too?

Well here is my story. I also SL ed kinda for all three maps as well...

Daquin - This map stressed me out big time... Seemed like whenever we tried to assault a flag we could not get anywhere... But when we defended a flag we had better success... Anyway I believe we did allright... It was just too evenly matched on that map in my opinion. I was stressed out big time. So we tried fot jump all over the place for a bit and stationed at Gas Station and defended it for the erst of the round.

Mashtuur - Well this one was a blast. Big props to everybody. We were tasked to defend Hill at all times. Most of the dirty work was done by Arf (Thump, Flux) and his fireteam. They chased after sneaky Jeeps, hunted down hiding enemy SLs or just greet incoming enemy squad. I doubt if I even fired a shot. I was just on the roof providing intel... And there is GM_Custom... That dude adn his 50 cal tore everything apart. Mishkan helped out Arf's team revived them etc... Good fun, and easy round for my squad... At least that is what it felt like for me...

Oman - This one I am not sure if I should call it SL ing... But we were the blackhawk boys. We were tasked to shoot down every single infantry in sight and support wherever necessary for heavy gattling cannon support... So Aftermath, Killrog and myself flew around the map capping flags sometimes, and mostly tearing infantries apart... At the end... Those two gunners in the balckhaw, top two scores... Myself 4th best score... Lots of fun...

We definetely should do this again sometime... Proud to be a 7.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

I was in Beatnick's squad for Oman.

Thanks to Beatnick for letting me be in his squad for a game, it was awesome. We had a good plan and everyone executed beautifully. We dominated that piece of real estate. I only remember one time when the arty was brought down. As the SL Beatnick did an great job of spotting enemies and directing us to targets.

We had some intense defensive battles going on, it was a real good time.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Memoirs from an Alliance SL:

Daqing Oilfields
Seppyk and I were a two man fast attack squad. We spent much of the round going from one place to another. Driving was particulary difficult because we keep running into either armor, helicopters, or jets on the roads. We spent a lot of time off-roading. We did manage to cap multiple flags by ourselves. The most surprising was when I took the center flag. Due to USMC's assault on our assets, we spent a good portion sweeping the airfield clean. Only once did we get bogged down in heavy combat at the East Oilfield. Since we kept moving, I didnt have an overall feel for the battle. It was like watching from the sidelines, just us manuevering around the edges of the war. The most surprising thing was Seppyk getting third place overall on score. I didnt think we were doing that much score wise such we werent in the thick of battles.

Mashtuur City
I was CO. Different thread to cover that.

Gulf of Oman
Here I was in charge of a 3 man squad. For the majority of Oman, we were under heavy fire. In the beginning, we tried to use armor, but it kept getting blown away. So we did try to go in on foot for assaults. A lot of times it ended in being mown down by helos. A few flags we capped by ourselves. We were more successful in the north than on the heavily contested beach. On this map, I felt we were more of a diversion than anything else. Especially when we attempted to take the River Fortification. So I tried to stay alive while my two squadmates kept the enemy engaged, hoping we could assist other full squads.

Very well played games. There was a lot of skill on the battlefield tonite. Every map played differently.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Daqing: (Jet) We had a very variable strategy due to the large chance that the flags would change around. Our first objective was taking out the bridges to slow down the alliance advance from their ucb. After that we decided to see how badly their bomber was bombing and how badly our bomber was being harassed. We then decided based on that. We then went on to do coordinated assaults on helicopters.

Oman: Originally our first objective was helicopter and bomber. But then we ended up taking bomb runs to try and support our guys near the hotel. We then took down helicopters as soon as they were spotted by our guys on the ground.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

I squad led in daquing and was moved all over the place. We did a lot of attacking and a lot of defending all over the map. Towards the end we were tasked with attacking and defending the center base to cause ticket bleed. Intense battle with the 42nd (?) where the flag went chinese, neutral, and american way too many times. My medics revived me a lot up there and eventually we took control of it and held on for the rest of the map.

Mashtuur i commanded in and at the beginning everything went according to plan. Eventually we lost the mosque and backyard and had to fight back. I sent squads back behind their lines to try to get flags but that failed. We kept pushing back up to the mosque and backyard and soon were able to get both. Once we got the 4 flags east of the bridges we held it for the rest of the game, pushing back wave after wave at all the entrances to the east side.

Oman i squad led and initially attacked the hotel. We were given plenty of air support and after a second assault were able to get the flag. We held it for 5 minutes before being overran by a lot of armor. For the rest of the game we were tasked with defending the southeastern fortification. Only once did we let the flag go neutral, and it was very brief. My AT guys were amazing taking out the enemy armor, and we were very well spread out to spot where the sneaky 42nd guys were attacking from. Also kudos to the air support, because everytime i asked for it i had bombs landing on enemy armor within 20 seconds.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Beatnik, you did a reat job tonight. Awesome squad leading. The squads we had tonight were some of the best I've ever played with.

Daquing was difficult to get into any kind of rythm of groove because we were moving around so much. Mashtuur was spectacular, it cost MEC a crap load of tickets to take the mosque from us, and it was a hell of a battle.

Oman was fun, in between the constant and never-ending dying from either bombers, attack chopper, artillary or incoming armor. I think I only died 3 times from actual infantry on this map while dying about 15 times from everything else.

It was an awesome night for playing, even though I never really got into the groove of it. The first 2 maps I played AT, which I love doing but you might as well be spitting on infantry instead of using that damn gun. On Oman as SF I was never really alive long enough when under attack to make much of a difference other than 3 or 4 timely C4 blows; between the air power and armor it was a meat grinder for awhile.

We have to make this a regular event, it's way to much fun to not do again.

Unfortunately I had to bow out due to a family incident, but in fact it was me who prepped the MEC plans for Oman /selfpimp. Glad to hear it was fun, boo to the 7th, and a regular event of this would be cool.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Daqing:
As Bane2 said, we were a fast attack/rapid response squad. Mostly responding to empty bases and annoyances at our UCB trying to take out our assets. We got wiped in the final two maps, so I'll take this time to trash talk and thank Asch, DrJones, Icky, and Flux for being on the receiving end of my grenades at the UCB.

I usually don't like playing on small squads, but this round was especially fun due to the competitiveness of the round and a lot of good times fearing for my life in a buggy while avoiding tank fire. We must have been doing a good job because there were many times where we were entirely alone in our position and had air support or artillery called on us. I'll take it as a compliment. Sassy did a great job at being on the ball as commander, taking back flags on the bleed.

Highlights of the round: Bane2's mobility and leadership skills in getting us around the entire map. The end of the round battle at the eastern oilfield where I took out an attack helo with an anti-tank pea shooter machinegun. Ahhh, memories.

Mashtuur:
I came in late on this round, and ended up joining Duke's squad with Sassy, Varp, and one other (Hockeydude?). I was assigned to support. We spent the early map making assaults on the mosque, trading off control of it with the US. We grabbed control, and then proceeded to take over the yard to the southeast, holding back enemy from that point for a good while before we got overrun. We spent the remainder of the map trying to breakthrough from the western side, but got turned back by a decent US infantry front towards the bridge middle, and then enemy armor support on the flanks. From what I hear part of our problem was at the beginning of the round when a "single squad" of 15 people took out our key attack chopper on the east side of the map.

Highlights: A decent defense on the southeastern yard was pretty fun. Good armor defense by Strikeman on the US when we tried to flank from the south to take it back.

Oman:
I start lagging and packet jumping badly in Mashtuur and was thankful that I was again assigned to Duke's armor squad. I ended up being assigned as an engineer to simply annoy Beatnik's squad at the River Fortification all round. There was some good done there and some bad. Had a lot of AT fire headed in my direction and then a decent bit of air support so I guess I was annoying in terms of having the enemy waste time to make me missile fodder. haha Ended up mid round being assigned to asset support and repair. Finally, we got more aggressive and ended up assaulting the River Fortification late game. We got it white once, but lacked coordinated infantry support to overtake it. Beatnik's squad did a good job of defending at the end, but it was clear that a more aggressive strategy at that point would have been preferred earlier.

Highlights: The late game aggressive assault on the River was chaotic, but quite fun.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

I gunned for the attack chopper on Daqiq. That was an extremely close round, with the Alliance leading most of the time. The 7th air defense was brutal. Between the jets and the AA vehicles and AA stations, our attack chopper was grounded most of the time.

I also gunned for the attack chopper on Oman. Arf and Mishkan were both taking it down a lot, but since there were no AA vehicles we spent most of the time in the air shooting at the infantry.

I am curious about Bommando's plan on Oman, though. Since the Alliance very nearly won on Daqiq--a balanced map--I figured we could win Oman since it's biased toward the MEC (IMO). But the 7th won by more than TG did when it played USA side against GCHQ on Oman in that scrim awhile back.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Great games all. Some very hard-fought battles against the most skilled opponents you could imagine.

I have revealed all of our tactics below for those who would like to debrief their squads on the event.

7th Summary

Daqing Oilfields

CO: StupidAwesome

Daqing Oilfields Tactics

Our task was to hit the Refinery along with Beatnik's squad and hold it against attack. I decided to watch over the field as a Sniper and lay my Claymores at strategic positions. After getting 2 instant teamkills despite announcing their location, I pretty much gave up on that idea.

The first few minutes were deadly quiet for us and I soon realised that Sassy probably didn't want to lose tickets trying to take one of the most heavily armoured CPs on the map. I started to send my armour to support other squads, but we were very spread out and it seemed that we had trouble taking CPs throughout the round. This meant that we suffered bleed for most of the round and that put a lot of pressure on us to take flags.

The round felt a bit disjointed as we seemed to get isolated a lot and kept being pushed back by superior defensive forces. I am honestly surprised we pulled a win from this, since we trailed for the whole round. A great rally at the end saw us bring it home in a nail-biter.

Result: 7th USMC Win 18-0

Mashtuur City

CO: Santa

Mashtuur City Tactics

We were much more confident going into this round with the knowledge we were up 1-0 in the best of three. This map favours an organised USMC side, so Santa knew what we had to do to bring it home. Our deployment was flawless with Beatnik and me setting up our defensive wall early in the round. The MEC really brought it heavy onto our position, surrounding us very quickly and simultaneously turning the Mosque and Backyard flags. This put us on the back foot and Santa did very well to stay calm throughout and leapfrog to the Power Station.

Once we stalled the bleed by restoring the Backyard, the Mosque came back under our control and we regained bleed for pretty much the rest of the round. There was excellent communication between the SLs on TS, with great support from the Blackhawk. Beatnik and I constantly called out any breakthroughs which allowed squads at the back flags plenty of time to prepare for the assault.

I have to give huge props to our medics on Mashtuur who really excelled in these battles. On many occasions our whole squad would go down to a couple of grenades, leaving only me or one medic alive. I'd pick up a downed medic's kit and revive another medic, then they would get the rest of the squad going within 10 seconds. We did this 5 or 6 times when our whole squad went down and it was a great sight to see. It must have been very frustrating for the enemy to see every guy they downed come straight back at them like the zombie army

It ended up being pretty comical when halfway into the map, I got some kind of bug that prevented me from selecting any weapon except for hand grenades. I spent the rest of the map telling my guys to stay back and just hid and threw nades. It was quite fun actually, but as soon as I was found it was end of story. Respawning didn't seem to help

Result: 7th USMC Win 198-0

Gulf of Oman

CO: Bommando

Gulf of Oman Tactics

I anticipated this to be our hardest map, since it offered a slight MEC advantage in terms of air power and CP proximity to our artillery. I was very pleased to see our deployment go exactly as planned and I wish I got an in-game screenshot to compare it to our ATC plan, beacuse it was a carbon-copy. Very well done by all.

Of course, there was never the expectation that this plan would last the entire round, so after a good 10-15 minutes of solid defense and building up a lead, we ended up getting put on the back foot, being left with only 2 CPs for a while. The squads did a great job to hit less well-defended back flags however and we soon stopped the bleed.

Beatnik, Assassin ans Santa had the hardest jobs on the map and executed their task to perfection each time. There was never a moment where I doubted our squads. JMJ did some great behind-the-lines flag capping and Jayhawk harangued Tempus at the UCB. A big thanks to B for his excellent Blackhawk support and Redleg and Mishkan for leading the helos and the Jets respectively. StupidAwesome and the mechanised infantry did well at the beginning of the map, but it soon became apparent that we were putting all our eggs in one basket and we merged Squad 9 with the others.

I feel our air support was incredible on Oman and every time I sent them to a waypoint, they would be there within seconds to neutralise heavy threats.

Overall a very solid performance on what I envisaged to be a difficult map to take home an win from. Well done to the 7th and well done to the Alliance for bringing it hard.

Result: 7th USMC Win 164-0

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

Hats off to everyone! It was a great scrimmage.

I think Oilfields let us settle down and settle in the groove of working together and finding some rhythm. 7th managed to pull off the victory but it could easily have gone either way. While we held the Mosque in Mashtuur as tasked it seemed like there was never any end to enemy bodies on or around our flag. They just kept slipping through. I have to agree with you, Beatnik, that our defense on Oman was the best and most intense battle I've experienced in BF2 and not one I'm likely to forget.

Thanks to everyone in my squads on all three maps. To a man, what a great team of guys to fight with. But I especially want to recognize you, Beatnik, for your superb squad leading. Your coolness, clarity and energy in battle is inspiring and exactly what is needed when a job needs to get done!

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

I was flying for James in the attack chopper the last 15 minutes of oman and Arf and Mishkan were brutal. Everytime I would go in for repairs we would just get shot down 50 meters from the landing pad.

Mashtuur was brutal for my squad. The original plan was to take the chopper and destroy there assets on the hill, that didn't go over to well. Then we were just flying around all over the map and getting shot down all over the map. It was constant death and I don't think I had 3 points untill I started whoring the shock paddles.

Daqing was my first time squad leading a whole round and it was a fun time. We pretty much defended the old city the whole round and only lost it two times but managed to get it back by the end of the round. Good job to everyone that was in my squad, bubba ob1one vodka & pickle.

I have to give credit to DigitalAssassin. He was the SL for DrJones and myself in the spec ops (annoyance) squad. He was able to keep alive and near your UCB for us to keep you busy. Was great fun playing the annoyance role.

Re: TG Scrim - A SL's perspective

The basic idea for mashtuur was to get all the flags on the east side of the riverbed and then set up a "wall". At first we held it to get a nice lead, but lost it soon. With about 20 minutes or so left we got those 4 flags back and i think since everyone was really into the game we were able to set up the wall perfectly to not allow anything in.

I thought it was kinda funny how in mashtuur we stole the Flying Fat Man (or whatever name you want to give it) from the MEC. I sent the 3 man BH squad to take the base as it was undefended, and upon leaving one of the guys got out and stole the big chopper. We gave it to JMJ's squad and he just went up to 600 meters and kept it the rest of the round. Once i had to use him as a taxi service though.

Id also like to say that at the Hill we only had one squad defending (B's). Everytime i saw you guys on the scan making any attempt to get close to the hill id send the blackhawk after yall, and if ya got close the tank would help some as well.
