Had best game as CO - thanks guys! :D

I had one of my best games of BF2 this afternoon (at around 4pm 10/29) playing at the TG server. I've been playing for some time now but most of the time I would just join a squad and just follow my SL's orders.

Well this afternoon it was different, I think we were playing Mahtuur City (sp?) and the server had about 50 something ppl in it, meaning about 20 something players on each team. I was roaming around in squad Alpha when I noticed we had no commander, so I was like, why not give CO a go.

Best decision I ever made.

It was one of the most fun experiences ever. I had 3 full 6-man squads at my disposal and about 2 more 3-man squads. I was just an awesome feeling knowing that, what seemed just like the view from seom real-time strategy game, but the difference was that each individual unit was a REAL LIFE person you were ordering around. They actually ALL listened to what I was telling them to do: attack here, move here, defend this flag. I hid in some corner on the map and was basically just watching the commander screen for the whole 1-hour of the map. It was just non-stop scan, UAV, scan, give out orders, artillery, supplies, scan, give out orders, UAV, scan artillery, etc...

I had two friends watching over my shoulder the whole time while i was playing and I don't know how i felt this way, but it's REALLY scary when you do a scan and you see DOZENS of dots converging onto two positions. what should i do? what should i do? Keep Squad 3 on a flag they are already defending a position or go defend the other flag being attacked? Once I had a good hold on the majority map, should I keep on the defending the flags and waste tickets, or send 2 teams to try to take over another flag? Decisions, decisions...it was just an awesome experience.

Squad leaders would ask me what to do and I would give out orders...one time I ordered Squad 1 to attack another flag and the squad leader said no...I checked, he was right, the flag was guarded by about 2 other enemy squads and converging onto THEM, so i told them to stay and asked another squad to help out on defence...one time I remember assigning Squad 3 to defend a flag but forgot to issue them new orders even when it was safe, but they STAYED there anyway! sorry!

I guess I made some mistakes being commander first time on TG.

Even though I never went out to actually go kill anybody but hid somewhere so that I could see the commander screen at all times I still ended up with 120 something points, good enough for 5th place overall i think (love that x2 bonus). We ended up winning 300 somethign tickets to abotu 100 something tickets when time finally ran out.

Again, it was just an awesomely awesome experience. Thanks everybody who was playing while I was CO. You all did great

Great to hear you tried it and enjoyed it. Man, I remember the rush of COing for the first time. It's really exhausting, stressful and you enjoy every second of it, right?

It tends to be less fun when you loose though

Ha ha, yep! I remember my first time commanding, we just got pasted. The next map, I stepped down and joined a squad just in time to hear the SL saying "Seems like our new commander is actually competant." I stayed quiet.

Principles of good Sandbox Etiquette:
Assume good faith - Be polite, please! - Work toward agreement. - Argue facts, not personalities. - Concede a point when you have no response to it, or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste. - Be civil. - Be prepared to apologize. In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so. - Forgive and forget. - Recognize your own biases and keep them in check. - Give praise when due.

Treat others as you would have them treat you

That was me... I didn't say No as such, just explained that the flag we were ordered to attack was the USMC's last flag so had about 25 people spawning there, plus it was uphill so our chances were slim.

Had a fun game, your orders were good, you kept most of the squads in an area, our squad stayed to the west most of the time which meant we didn't have to move far. I had a nice sniping position for the squad to spawn on between two flags, changing target was not a problem. We stayed there until we pushed USMC back east, then had to drop back when there blackhawk flew over the line which was the only time I was worried by your orders cos no-one was at the 3 west spawns, so I hauled my squad back, hopefully my initiative was welcome lol.

Props to my squad on that map, i'm not used to SL'ing but they followed orders very well and got the job done. Especially liked the Blackhawk time, the squad jumping out then I would fly support around the flag with a single gunner.

Were you controlling a cobra or the blackhawk? I remember you not really as Squad 1 (which I think you were) but "the-squad-always-with-a-helo-flying-around"

yea, once you moved west, i think i pretty much had you defend the 2 northwest flags

fun times

This is a prefectly valid thing to do. You were not saying no because you didn't want to, but asking that your CO have a better look at the situation in the light of new evidence (which you provide). That way you ask to confirm the order.

For example if my squad were ordered to a base 2k away and we had no transport I'd state that we had no transport and ask to clarify the order. CO's can't know everything, so help them to help you!

Of course if the CO said to do it anyway it's time to get those running boots on.

Lol, well we battled our way into the South Garage, took the flag and got a Blackhawk for our troubles, Was the quickest way to get back to the west side, we only had it for 5/10 minutes but was a nice change of pace. I was sat in the heli looking at the map asking for orders then said "ok pilot back to our garage, flags gone white", at that point I notaced I was the pilot... oops.

Hell yeah, if delphi00 had said attack anyway I would of found a way to take as many enemy troops with us.
