Ex-Military and Ex-Law Enforcement TGers

I know and have gathered that a fairly high percentage of our active TGers have military experience. But it'd be cool to get a rough number.

I think this is the first post I've ever moved from the Sandbox to the General Forum... This is interesting and since there are so many people that intentionally avoid the Sandbox, I think it'll get more of a response here.

Former Marine LAV mech stationed in 3rd LAR, 29 Palms. Now a squid in VAQ-140 working on the Navy's EA-6B, the "premier" electronic strike aircraft.

Re: Ex-Military and Ex-Law Enforcement TGers

Squid - a lot of european countries have 'military service'. When you hit 18 or so you have to join the forces for a set number of years (usually 2 i think), and you have to have a bloody good reason to get out of it.

The UK had military service decades ago, but it was stopped. The most famous exemption I can pull off the top of my head (so it might not be right) would be Ralf Schumacher, the F1 driver, who successfully put a case forward that 2 years in the military would affect his career as a F1 driver.

I used to know quite a lot of scandinavian guys over the internet a few years ago, and they all ended up doing military service.

As for me, I was in the cadets for 5 years, 1 for the army and 4 for the RAF. Still a civvy tho!

Re: Ex-Military and Ex-Law Enforcement TGers

Well, I went through basic training as a "Funker" (radio operator - actually a telephone switch programmer). I had a G3, could take it apart and back together blindfolded and fired the machine gun once. Otherwise you pretty much try not to shoot too much because cleaning guns takes a long time and is taken very serious in the german military. Then I went on to use all that training by being a waiter in the UffzHeim (lower officers canteen - where they get drunk). I really had to do only 12 months, because university started and you can get out early then.

Good thread, nice to see who has been or is in our military forces. One thing, we are not ex - military we are former or prior. Myself, retired US Air Force, 21 1/2 years.

Re: Ex-Military and Ex-Law Enforcement TGers

Indeed wulfyn, nearly all Swedish guys around 18-19 years of age had to do military service ranging from 7,5 to around 18 months.

I spent 10 months as a Lance-corporal I think (overfurir), with a infantry company, attached to the artillery group of the company. We directed artillery and mortar strikes using radio, maps, calculation and laser range finders.

Today though, not many guys get to do military service. Out of 50 000 tryouts every year, I think about a fifth of them gets picked (was on the news the other day) due to cutbacks on defence budgets.

Like Wulf is saying we I Norway have public services in the military. I have been in:
* Lifeguard/VIP Escort Company for His Majesty The King
* Mechanized infantry company with CV 9030 (The CV 930 I much like our BF2 APC)
