Wake and Oman PW Games, Wed 11/02/2006 ~9-11pm EST
Wake almost became a disaster for China (my team), as we lost the airfield and were down to one flag on the southern leg of the island at one point. It took a massive sustained push against the airfield to reclaim it. During this time, our infantry was slaughtered by unhindered USMC jets, attack and transport helos, and armor. The finely tuned balance of Wake Island was once again on display for all to see.
Once China was finally able to regain the airfield the scales tipped more toward actual balance, and we were able to hold the southern leg of the island for the rest of the map. Bleed was in our favor for the most part, but we'd already lost too many tickets to make an effective comeback. This may have been mentioned in other threads about Wake, but one thing I think that could really help the Chinese cause would be to have a Sniper positioned on the western tip of each of the island's legs during the initial stages of a (and possibly for the entire) round. These two players would spot anything coming from the USMC carrier, which would help defenders anticipate and mass appropriately. Incoming choppers and boats could be spotted early enough to provide extra time for friendly jets to destroy them. Oman was a round of vengeance for the formerly Chinese team from Wake. USMC made some good pushes, but it seemed that MEC had a firm grip on this map from the beginning. Both MEC COs (Sugar & asch) did a fine job, and for those of us occupying the beach flags, we had a great view of the aerial battle as Dark Viper, Duke, and Arf dominated the air in their jets. Overall, great games, everyone! EDIT: I must have been using my crystal ball to see an entire year into the future. Make that 11/02/2005! ![]() |

Actually, the only reason the Chinese were able to come back on that map was because of Dark Viper. The US held the airfield for several minutes, and had Viper died, there would have been 4 jets tearing us up. It was hard fought to get that flag back. Had the enemy had 4 jets pounding us, we never would have made it. Great fun tho

Even I won't defend the jets on that map (Wake).
Oman was revenge. As MEC we had the two best pilots on the server in the air (Arf and Dark Viper) and had most of the beach AA manned up. I don't think the USMC airforce was happy. :P |

I had some fun spec op runs on the MEC airfield on Oman. A much better UCB defense on PW night though. Oman has a tough UCB to assualt though. Wide open fields of fire with lots of vehicles. You can only really hide behind the trailer buildings by the scanner or opposite the helipad by the AA. You almost have to do the later since the chopper always seems to be out to get you and you need the AA. Of course then it's a long, hairy walk to your asset targets. OF course that helps when you catch a engineer by the UAV trailer. Shotgun can't save him now
As a spec op, I just need to break the assualt habit of being in single shot mode with my rifle and I'll be all set. That toasted me in an embarassing fashion more than once.

I think I'm getting too much credit where none is due. On Wake, I was just waiting around the airfield until the US captured it so I could steal the F-18 away from them. But as I was getting in the F-18 I told Arf and Santa that I was taking off in the F-18. Well *ahem* Santa thought I said that they were taking off and proptly came by and blew me up (tker lol). I did take Santa's J-10 when we retook the airfield as payback though
.But yea, I was only up in the air for like the last 5 minutes of the game. And I think only 1 F-18 spawns at the airfield even if both J-10s are down.

Then who was in the Air for several minutes when the US held the strip? Someone stayed up the entire time, and a squad mate told me it was you. Whoever it was saved all of our arses.

Whoever was up in the air in a jet for China during the time USMC held the airfield, thanks. Either way, it was still BOHICA for us ground pounders.

I think it would be interesting to try Wake without air support. Don't get me wrong though, I thoroughly enjoyed the bomb-dodging challenge last night.

On Oman Fallen was flying the bomber for about half the map until he got disconnected and Duke took his place. On Oman I just rode around in the gunner seat playing Zeus.
Wake only spawns one F-18 but we kept the jets in the air as long as possible (so as to shoot down and steal the F-18). We did get into a great car chase with the attack helicopter though. Viper tried to rush Santa and I to the airfield in an FAV. There was enemy infantry shooting at us from everywhere and then the attack helicopter dropped in right behind us and chased us up the road at ground level. Viper was zigging and zagging and the gunners were shooting at everything that moved. As I described it then I describe it now - John Woo film.

Re: Wake and Oman PW Games, Wed 11/02/2006 ~9-11pm EST
I remember Oman last night. I was squad leading, not a common occurence. I don't remember my entire squad but I had a few 2nd member on it. Friedfish, Sugar, and Tau_Neutrino came on late in the match. I also remember having Jep. But after things settled down a little(about when Asch went commander), my one little squad was defending all four beach flags simultaneously
. Keeping their arty down and giving USMC choppers and jets plenty of locks with AA. Good times .
