A Tale of Two Squad Leaders (Daqing Oilfields, 12/04/2005)

I visited the Daqing Oilfields not once, but twice last night on Server 1. Both times were a blast.


The first battle was early in the evening (~6:30pm EST). Ragnar was our Squad Leader on PLA, and with his leadership we did a fine job of holding the two western flags on the map. We saw a lot of action at those two flags, with several attacks on the southwest flag, but in each case we were able to either hold or regain a flag if lost. Friendly attack chopper and bomber support was effective and much appreciated.

The plateau just north of the southwest flag is a beautiful spot from which to maintain overwatch on that flag. A squad either attacking or defending the southwest flag would do well to use that northern plateau, as some of us in Ragnar's squad did. From our perch, we were able to enfilade enemy infantry and vehicles below fairly easily.

Several times the enemy tried to push on the Power Station from the woods to its west, and our squad had to fan out into those woods and do some hunting. Our CO also had to divert Artillery, Scan, and UAV assets to those woods for a time, and a couple of enemy infantry pushes came close to breaking through from those woods. Props to those enemies who were using those woods for cover -- you kept us busy.


The second battle was later on that night. FPS_Douglas was our Squad Leader on USMC, and he did a fine job while under incessant attack. Our squad spent a great deal of time at the north central flag, pinched between the PLA UCB to our northwest and a PLA controlled flag to our east. We were hit with everything from ROFLchopper paradrops to armored advances to sneaky infantry invading from our north. The flag actually fell a couple of times, but FPS_Douglas did a fantastic job of keeping us in a position to counterattack. Friendly attack chopper support was extremely effective and much appreciated.

At one point, while we were defending the flag, a lone enemy tank rolled in from the east. FBMantis hammered it with a couple of his own tank rounds, causing the driver to bail. We quickly eliminated the enemy tank driver, and because FBMantis was an Engineer we were able to repair the abandoned enemy tank and use it ourselves.

We pushed on the flag to our east a couple of times, but were repelled each time. Thankfully, by the end of the round, we weren't seeing much action at our flag beyond occasional infantry and a few speeding buggies here and there. We'd held a hotly contested flag for nearly the entire round, helping our team's overall effort.


Props to everyone playing those rounds on Daqing, and especially to Ragnar and FPS_Douglas for their fine work as Squad Leaders.

and my guys were defending cistern and gas station most of the night (gj guys)... we didn't have an attack helo for most of the round, so that put us at a disadvantage... but it was still a really great round - totally fun...

(to compensate for the lack of air->armor, i was eng most of the round... think i had 15 or so AT-mine kills for the round, and i'm sure at least 5 of them were on buggies filled w/ FPS_Douglas' squad - those guys were relentless!! )

That was a great round, thanks for the props, Strag I can't take much credit for SL'ing that round, you guys did great. With a squad with the likes of you, Gunrack, Charlie Brown, Wussypoo and the others who came though, it's easy to be SL. Y'all almost never needed a spawn point. Shoot, anytime any type of helo came near the Old City, it either ran away smoking or was esploded. Great squad.

Whisky, the majority of my squad stayed on Defense. It was mostly Gunrack and I who were hitting those mines... I was driving Nice placement man, I almost never saw any of them.

lol, one time I was standing there in the middle of the fenced in area when you came whizzing down through the North gate... i thought I'd re-mined the road out there, but apparently not, as you zipped by nearly hitting me!! I turned to watch you zip stright through the fenced-in area and, out the south gaBOOM!!.

I laugh out loud to myself - in the span of 3 seconds I went from "oh yeah, here they come!" to "OH ####!!" to "phew they missed" to "saWEET!!"

that was a fun round we lost by about a hundred i think, but... good times...

Right back at you. You guys just kept coming and coming, and you did a great job of mixing up your approach. It'd be quiet for a minute or two, and then all of a sudden I'd see AT smoketrails streaming toward our tanks from the trees, with riflemen flanking around . I was wondering if we'd get hit hard from the south while we were up to the north trying to push you guys back, but luckily it didn't really happen. Helluva round.

Yeah, I tried to co-ordinate another squad to come from the South but it wasn't happening. Also, you guys were bunching up your armor pretty close there. I can't tell you how many times I called for air strikes on those things with no results.

Thanks for the kind words guys, only wish I could have done more. We were fighting an odd battle of attrition as we had people going to bed. My goal was to bleed them, Drizzid was saying bleed was off (Can anyone verify?). They had the air superiority and were draining a bunch of tickets through bombing. We held a majority of flags for a good portion of the game but could never seem to get ahead.

Whiskey Six did a bang up job splitting his squad to defend the gas station, the Cisterns and the refinery from the US Main. Because of how I had him stretched, I couldn't pull him to the old city. Drizzid was holding down the fort on the west side as the Chineese would try to roll into one flag or the other with chopper support. Pickle's squad was very effective and a nuisance at the old city as well as helping to clear out the 3 guys going after our assets. Their air support was good while ours was fair and that made a big difference as they stayed in the air Much Longer than ours did.

In the end, the US was a menace on our CO Assets and forced some of our resources from being as effective as we could have been as well as our inability to own the air. At one point I had Diceman +1 and Pickle +5 clearing out 3 guys (Zigrat) who were persistent as heck. Props to our guys as well as the US. I know I am going to hear about this at work from Otthawk (record vs. Otthawk is now even 1-1)

I was in Whiskey's squad and left at the gas station with Ragnar and at times cpl3. We defended at least 4 attacks before it fell. My personal highlight was taking out a Cobra and Blackhawk with the TOW in successive defenses.

I'm not sure who was attacking, but they eventually came at us low from the North on the other side of the brick building from the TOW. I nearly got a hit on the Cobra but he put some air under himself and my shot went low. Meanwhile the BH went behind me and perforated my heinie. Ah yes, good times...

Great lead Whiskey and good round all.

Bleed was definitely on. Almost everytime I looked at the map China had bleed so I was surprised to see the US win. Perhaps it was the air superiority that did it. I certainly don't remember getting bombed much at the Old City. Artillery was very ineffective as well(@Old City) but I credit that to psychic powers within the squad and the large terrain there which let us spread out on defense. Anyway, I had fun. Was a nice change of pace from the sniper squads I usually run/join.
