Sharqi, 12/11, ~10:30 PST, ~20 players: great OpFor comeback

Have to say, this one was a surprise victory by our team, the OpFor. We ended up pulling out a comeback victory in the last minutes of the game, winning 17-0, when we were literally losing around 17-68. The round only had about 20 players playing on the small 16 player version of Sharqi. I never played the map this way before, so it was interesting, as it only had 3 flags in contention, with the OpFor having the lone 4th flag as a UCB (hotel).

Anyway, for most of the round, we pretty much held the Construction flag and the Office Building flag, at times losing them, but getting them right back, while the USMC seemed content to hold the TV Station flag, as they were ahead and there was no bleed. It was basically a Karkand at the river stalemate at the Office Building, but the USMC had a 30 ticket advantage with their good defense, which grew to 50+ near the final 2 minutes. We did make a few attempts to take the TV station, but give credit to the USMC, they held it well.

Last 2 minutes, I told my squad, the heck with it, let's make a frantic push towards the TV station, and see what happens. I took a vodnik towards the stairs near the USMC arty, and immediately ran into some opposition. I ended up sneaking by while my squad engaged. I next ran into a couple more guys ground level near the station, managed to kill one, then snuck inside. I'm thinking the whole time, man, I'm going to die, I'm going to die. Next thing I know, most of my squad spawns on me at the TV station flag, and we take it. gunjunkie really saved the day there, as he literally took out 6-7 enemy infantry pushing up the stairs towards the flag with his gl.

I think another squad ended up taking the Office Station flag after the TV station fell, and it looked like all the USMC had was a tank. It's like 1 minute left, with our team losing 17-68, or so. But we have all the flags. My whole squad was thinking the same thing: we get that last guy, we win. With 40 secs to spare, our team gets that guy. A great comeback.

Anyway, kudos to my squad (Arf, 20th-Rip, gunjunkie, HankChinowski, PockyLover, & marstein at the end) and our team for a job well done. Still shocked we did it. I know I was complaining for awhile there, but you guys hung in there with me. Good games.

I'd just like to point out the the GL work at the end there was not n00b tubing. It was a realistic application of a grenade (or three) into a small enclosed concrete space with two walls between me and the impact (from the area near the flag into the stairwell).

It was 5 with the GL, I got the sniper on the way up the stairs to clear the roof.

*edit* forgot to sound off...

Great squad action on our holding of the Office building and probing and final mad dash to the TV station. Thanks for the game. That map was fun at that scale.

It was great fun. At the very end we managed to stop a one-man capture of the Construction Yard and then used C4 to block the gate entrance to the Television Station which trapped the tank at the Office Building flag. There was a pair of guys hiding on that flag and they kept the tank from capturing. I guess the tank driver didn't feel safe parked next to a TOW while infantry was sneaking up on him so he jumped out but got gunned down by the defenders.

It made a good end to a night that was mostly brutal defeats for the Opfor

Can you explain what noob tubing is exactly?

N00b tubing is really close range use of the GL, without thought for personal safety. Dice failed to put a minimum arm range on the grenade launcher, and also made the splash damage really weak, so lots of people tend to use it like a shotgun.

If you fire it at somebodys feet really close to you. That's n00b tubing.

I always thought the term "noob toobing" was in reference to the general use of the grenade launcher. Regardless, going by your definition, gunjunkie, I didn't feel like you did that at all at the TV station flag. You certainly didn't die in the process of using it. I was just surprised that the enemy was that clustered going up the stairs like that. imo, almost any other kit would have gotten the same results in a tight situation like that, whether it would have been c4, claymores, or regular ol' nades. Shoot, we got wiped out earlier trying to take that same flag in the round by just one nade. So, basically, what I'm saying is that I saw nothing wrong with it, and I don't think most other TGers would either.

Re: Sharqi, 12/11, ~10:30 PST, ~20 players: great OpFor comeback

Exactly, the reason for the string of kills was the enemy was stacked to close going up the stairs. Might have worked if we didn't have explosives. Should have nade spammed...er... suppressed us from down below before trying to assault.

I guess a lot of folk have a problem with the general use of the GL, but, as has been mentioned in other posts in the tactics section. Getting kills at range with it is a skill.

More reason to practice scouting and reasonable squad spacing. Nothing is better than looking down (maybe from the ramp on Karkand) onto a group of 3 or 4 stacked really closely. Just too tempting to engage with lobbed grenades.

I was one of those on the stairs and I had no problem with it. In fact, I came around a corner (GL in hand) and was suprised by Gunrack. I fired literally in his face. I thought I had the MG on. I died he didn't. I respawned and was promptly killed by a GL. It was a great time. I have to say one of the best times I have had in a while on TG BF2. Maybe the smaller format is the way to go for me. Good job guys. You deserved that win.

I wouldn't say we (OpFor) deserved to win; we just got lucky at the right time. You guys on USMC definitely were a force to be reckoned with, as evidenced by the big ticket lead until the very end. I just managed to stay alive as SL on that last push, in large part to my squad's distracting the enemy, with maybe the enemy CO asking you guys to go somewhere else (we still had lots of enemy contacts, tho), and with gunjunkie's game saving gl shot at the TV station flag. Like Lucky Shot's sig says, "I'd rather be lucky than good". Good games.

I say deserve because we lost sight of the big picture and let our defense of the TV station down.

BTW, how much splash damage did you take from the GL I shot point blank that killed me but not you?

I think I was down to about 1/3 health after that, maybe less.

Great comeback. We thought we were done. I got to give it up to Gunrack(great job as SL) and Gunjunkie there at the end. I spawned as we got the flag and was promptly killed by an explosion out on the balcony of the TV Station. I saw that the US didn't have a flag and spawned back at the construction yard. To my suprise I was face to face with a Marine and the flag had gone grey. I opened up and he opened up... I had a single red line for health and he was dead. Crazy ending to a crazy battle.

Welcome to the TG forums, Hank! Didn't realize it was you who was at the Construction Site flag and helped save it at the end, but nonetheless, great job, and great thinking about spawning there! Without that, we definitely would not have won. Good games.
