Desert map project

I gave up on my SF map because 1) people dont play SF and 2) it was pretty much my first map and wasn't good enough. I played around with Terragen for 1-2 weeks and figured out how to make good looking terrain.

I made the rocks/cliffs with Terragen, rest so far by hand since Terragen doesn't do smooth terrain like dunes well. I plan to have several tanks per team and plenty of buggies/jeeps, no helos or jets. Here are some very early screenshots showing the MEC UCB (showing China vehicles in editor), the Oasis CP and some airstrip that probably won't be a CP but just background eye candy. There's suposed to be a static bomber and fighter next to the stairs on the airstrip but they....disapeared :|. I want to add a small city (west of the oasis where theres a big empty space) with either a lot of TOWs or with blocked access for vehicles so tanks can't enter it.

(Editor shots because I can't run the game in high detail, fog is turned off so lighting is a bit bright and doesnt look right):

Re: Desert map project

Nice, you can almost feel the heat just looking at it.

Is there going to be any villages? Anything that could be totally unique? I've seen a few desert maps already so hope this will be a bit different (and good!)

I think I will start a new map, I haven't found time to compile my current map (it will take days) so might as well start on a new one, could do with lending your brain Kilrogg to get some more ideas on what to do will start a new topic for that though.

Re: Desert map project

Some more pics from the editor until I fix my in-game vegetation problem. Map is I would say 80-90% done. I have made it in just a week which surprised me, everything went well and I'm happy with the layout.

To do:

- Final lightmaps (only low quality in the pics)
- Minor texture detail
- Minor object placement/adjustments (detail)
- Finish spawn/objectspawner points
- Description, loading screen etc

Map has:

- 2 tanks per side + 1 at city and 1 at oasis
- lots of buggies/jeeps
- no air
- only 1 artillery gun per side

Re: Desert map project

Shure looks pretty but i would like to see a helo or two, even if they are both MEC transport.

Re: Desert map project

Looking good! I always wanted to see a more desert desert map than the scrub brush maps they give us. Are there any effects that can simulate a sandstorm?

Re: Desert map project

I think there are some effects, I still have to add those ambiant effects and figure them out.

Penguin, I might put a chopper for each side but the map really looks bigger than it is in the editor. There will be enough buggies for everyone and I wanted people to drive around the map in squads more than fly around but we'll see.

Re: Desert map project

Dessert map? Do we get it after dinner?

Joking aside, the map is looking wonderful. Lots of custom maps don't look so hot, or seem like they wouldn't play well, but this is really coming along nicely. Those buildings look like they would be a great place for a firefight.
