New to TG and to BF2....

Hi. I just picked up BF2 the other day. I used to be an avid Day of Defeat player years ago and even had my own clan with my brother and a few close friends. But well, VALVe really screwed their fan base IMO and I know refuse to support them.

I have been looking for a good game similar to DoD for a while now and I had been hearing a lot of things about BF2 and every thread I'd read about it or every video I'd watch about it I wanted to be a part of it.

The problem? Well, I haven't played any online games since I left DoD in 2001. So I suck. And I suck hardcore.

I've been playing online since last night. I played for about an hour and a half and got owned ever time I spawned but I did manage to stick it out because it was a lot of fun and did manage to score one registered kill on my stats.

What am I looking for? I was given this site by a member over on [H]ardforum I'm assuming he is also a member here On the [H] he goes by Lake, dunno what he goes by on here though. I'm basically looking for a good place to learn about the game, how to play, how to use all the features of the game and I'm looking for someone who doesn't mind babysitting a newb and teaching me some stuff. I'm lookinf also to play with the same group of guys over and over again. I don't want to have to relearn nuances, tactics and personalities of different "groups", squads or teams. So I'm basically looking to join a team, or a squad and stay there. Kind of like a real military unit.

I usually play the USMC but last night depending on what server I played on in EA's servers I was mostly the MEC in Iraq. Which wasn't so bad, they have some cool weapons too.

As of now I don't have an microphone, I'm gonna buy a headset this weekend. I'll be DLing Xfire tonight after work and hopefully I can hook up with a few people tonight and learn some stuff. Keep in mind though, I don't quite know the controls yet and it takes me a while to figure stuff out. It took me 15 minutes last night to figure out how to get inside a tank, a helicopter and a jet. Which I've gotta say, I really like the vehicles in BF2. They aren't too difficult to manuver once you figure them out. I managed to fly a jet fairly well last night and managed to hit another jet with a missle, I didn't shoot it down cause I wasn't completely "locked" onto it but I clipped it, then I crashed into a building.

It's a lot of fun.

Re: New to TG and to BF2....

I'd say you are a natural talent(or very lucky) if you hit another Jet(I'm assuming enemy jet). Usually whatever I fire from a jet either hits friendly jets/helos or misses.

Well done ChIck3nL3gz, and welcome.

I'll leave the remember to read the tread http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-2-after-action-reports/announcements.html to others --- ooops just did it.....

Welcome to Tg ChIck3nL3gz. Good of you to come check us out and play. Please read all our rules and SOP's, the links are in my sig.

Here at TG we help each other in the games we play. You will find that in BF2 alot of folks create squads for the new guy's. Join up in one of those and they will help you stay alive long enough to enjoy the game. Hope to see and spill your blood on the battlefield.

Re: New to TG and to BF2....

Thanks.

Yeah, it was an enemy jet that I clipped. It was pounding some of my team-mates on the ground and I got an order to shoot it down. I accepted, I always accept the incoming commands even if I don't exactly know where I'm supposed to be or what I'm supposed to do, I just want to help out an do a good job. I wish I had waited for the full lock. I'm sure I could've shot it down.

I also managed to use one of those mounted rocket launchers on an APC. They were using it to ram into my team-mates so I jumped ont he rocket launcher and took out the APC, unfortunately the guys inside it jumped out before I destroyed it and I noticed the launcher won't lock onto people, I guess they don't have a large enough heat signature if any at all. I think I do however, need to reverse the mouse so that when I move it up the plane goes up. Cause when I moved it up the plane went down and that's how I managed to crash into a building.

I'm rally enjoying this game. And I'm trying to get back up to the standard I had been when I played DoD although this games is proving to be a bit more involved tactically which is good because I've been looking for a good team based game. I really want to eventually be a part of a clan or a squad with a name or something so that when asked who I play with on BF2 I can tell them and have them be like, "Cool, I've seen you guys play and you're pretty damn good." But I know it's going to be a while before I'm good enough.

That's how my brother and I were on DoD with our small clan back in the day. I miss those days.

Is there a certain place where they announce they have newbie squads? And what is the server we all play on? right now I've been using a lot of EA's servers but I find that a lot of those guys don't want to or have the patience to help out a newb. Although I was working with a pretty decent squad at one point where I had a medic following me around cause he recognized the fact that I sucked and he helped me out a few times.

Welcome! Anytime you join a squad with a squad-leader wearing |TG| tags, consider yourself in a "learning" squad!

In the mean time, be sure to read up in our tactics forum - there are a lot of great threads in there to get you up to speed!

here's a good one to get started with: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...ber-guide.html

Those mounted rockets don't lock on to ANYTHING: not APCs nor people. You can steer them with your mouse though.

Out of curiosity, why have you decided that ValvE screwed the players over?

Why, the TacticalGamer.com servers, of course! You can find a list of our servers here, and if you filter by "tacticalgamer.com" using the in-game browser, you should find us. You'll find lots of medics to follow you around, and support guys to give you ammo, and jets squads with just pilots so you guys can cover each others backs, and helicopter squads so the pilot and gunner can work together. It's a completely different experience than playing on the EA servers!

If you see some guys wearing a |TG| tag in the game, feel free to stop and ask them questions. Read our rules and SOPs so you're familiar with how we play, then hop on the servers! And welcome to TG!

Just don't play this game like DoD. DoD is more of a twich game, the weapons in BF2 are extremely innaccurate compared to DoD or CS, it's more of a tactical game.

Some of them do. The ones that come to mind are the ones in the Marshland map and and the USMC spawn is at the refinery. The ones on top of that little building lock onto heat sources. I'm not sure if they are rocket launchers or missile launchers but I had a hell of a time shooting at the APC because the gun would see the towers with the fire coming out of the top of them and lock onto those first.

And VALVe screwed it's fan base with the implementation of STEAM. I own their entire catalog when it was released in 1998, 1999. I am now reduced to using those disks as coasters because VALVe does not recognize them as legal copies of the games even though they were legally purchased. The cut my throat in the name of new money. I also fail to support them because I like having a box, with a CD and a booklet. I don't like having a product I pay for sitting on someone else's servers. I want a hard copy in my hand. And I don't want to have to spend more money to buy blank CD's to copy the files they allow me to have onto a CD. Screw VALVe.

Kilrog,

I need to get used to the fact that the BF2 guns are a little more realistic than the DoD guns. I've noticed on the EA servers that they do just "run and gun" and no one really provides backup or covering fire. When I snuck intot he gas station last night I had no one watching my back when I slinked across the walls, in the bushes and tall grasses. I had to do it myself.

Heh, those are anti-aircraft missles.. Heat seekers. They're locking on to the heat of the burning oil. Shooting at land vehicles with those is pretty futile.. Not only because they have a mind of their own sometimes, but because they don't do much damage.

Oh see, I didn't know that. Thanks.
