Sniper Range Practice Map

Hey,
I've been wondering if there would be any way to make a custom map, that would allow snipers to practice against some bot targets to work on accuracy. Right now, its pretty tough to get some dedicated practice in, but if you could script in a map some Bots that are scripted to specifically do a certain action, this problem would be solved. Maybe on the private server one night a week or something. Just have bots spawn at a certain position, and have them run to another position.
A firing lane of sorts, where a bot is spawned at 25m from a position, and runs to another position, and then is automatically killed if the sniper hasn't killed him. Then spawn another at the same position, and repeat this running acrost the firing lane until either the sniper has gotten an X amount of headshots against a moving target, or a certain amount of time has passed. Then repeat this at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards. This sort of accuracy training could also work for the other classes.
Maybe for AT, spawn a tank at 50 yds, moving at a certain speed to another position, and see if he can get the hit. There could be endless varieties of classes vs bot situations that would allow our members to practice off the real field at plain accuracy.
You could even have bombing practice for jets and bombers against vehicles, both static and moving.

I think this might be possible, but i dont know. Would it be possible? Would it work? Could we try it out? Is there any interest?

So, its early, and this might be a little rambling, but hopefully you can get what i mean.

Comments are appreciated as always,

Not possible because EA hasn't released tools that let you add AI to your maps

Just play single player offline as a sniper.

The BOT AI isn't that great but at least they move irraticlly enough that you can hone your sniping skills.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

One thing to remember is that the game measures distance in meters, not yards. 300 yards = ~274 meters. It is possible to get kills at 300+ meters but you're probably not going to do this on a moving target One thing that will greatly affect your ability to snipe is your ping. I have found that if mine gets over 100, it's time for me to play another kit. My ping usually sits around 60ms which gives me no trouble at all.

ChIck3nL3gz has the right idea, work on the bots offline. You will have a greater hit percentage offline than you do online though, so don't get discouraged when you miss some guaranteed shots online.....lag does funny things.

Yah, i have no problems with ping, usually around 30-40. So, how would i go about making a map like this, offline?

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

I wish my ping was as low as all of yours. My ping is always around 100+. It never goes down. I blame DSL. Last night it was really bad almost 200. I'd spawn and get killed immediately because I couldn't move.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

100 is almost nothing. Keep in mind these are milliseconds. Depending on the game's netcode, your ping can be into the 250's before you start noticing any adverse effects. With BF2, 100 is prett much par for the course, except for a few servers to which you get really good ping.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

I consider 100ms to be the high water mark for "playable" when it comes to shooters. Try playing single player at 10 fps and see how well you do. That'll give you an idea of how 100ms of latency affects your perception of the virtual environment relative to the server's perception of it.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

Considering my 200+, I think I play rather well. Of course, when I join UK servers, suddenly hitting jets and helo's with tank shells seems like child's play.

You cannot get bots in a custom map of any kind.

The only way to fight bots is to play singleplayer on any of the stock maps (custom maps crash on load in single player anyway).

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

I believe there is a way to get something like 50 bots on a 16 player singleplayer map. Figure that out and your set.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

For some reason I get much better accuracy on single player as a sniper than online. My ping is usually around 60, is that enough for the difference?

There is a mod which will give you 32v32 bots on a stock SP map. Google will find it quick enough and i think planetBF2 host it. It is extremely crazy though and i wouldnt overly recommend it. The novelty wore off after a few minutes. I still dont see how this would enable you to customise a SP map to a sniper range though you still have the problem that you cant get bots onto a custom map.

I would say yes is the quick answer to that one.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

I don't think you could make a map just for sniping, but I had lots of fun loading up Dalian Plant in SP with the Tactical mod. I only played sniper (On the US side). It was quite hilarious slaughtering the bots. By the end of the match I had fifty kills and no deaths. I was crittically wounded a few times after taking down 4-5 guys with grenades/pistol/knife as close range, but there was always a friendly medic close enough to revive me so I could kill the rest.

You will definitaley get better accuracy on SP because there isn't any ping. It might be harder to hit things because the bots move so eractialy (more so than most players) but they still aren't too hard to kill because they never go for cover or to shoot you from long range.

Re: Sniper Range Practice Map

Yes it is, even the 40-50 that I get makes a big difference. To really see the difference, fire a TOW on a server where you get 50-60 ping then fire a TOW in singleplayer, the missile is much more accurate and fires faster in single player.
