Dying in (seemingly) one shot

I've been having this happen alot lately, and i'm wondering if it happens to you as well. Obviously we've all shot at people and see them die from just one hit, its not often, and the vast majority of the time someone next to you was shooting at them as well, so you can chalk it up to just getting in the last killing shot.

Lately however, I've been going from completely full health, to dead staring up at the sky. It reminds me of playing CS and its very frustrating. It tends to happen alot with the AK-101. One shot from that beast and i'm instantly dead. I'm wondering if you guys think it happens because of lag: meaning you were hit several times rapidly and the game just caught up and killed you. Or if this is the infamous head shot.

In CS, it shows you if you've been hit, or hit someone in the head, no way to tell in BF2. It's really frustrating though when I go into an engagement with completely full health, and assault kit armor, only to die in one shot

Actually its more irritating because, barring being previously damaged, I've never once killed a known fully healed enemy in one shot from an assault rifle. grr.

I don't know if this answers your question, but wouldn't a prone enemy at moderate range take you down almost insantly with the AK-101? If it takes just three bullets to take you down from full health, and those three bullets are fired in probably .15 seconds or something, it seems reasonable that the person on the recieving end wouldn't be able to distinguish each individual impact (those impacts occuring at, approximately, .00, .075, and .15 seconds).

the only way to tell if you got a headshot is the puff of smoke.. .and I assume they used a grey puff so moms wouldn't be upset at a red puff.

I'd say if 1 of the 3 hit your head and the otehr landed on body, you'd be a dead man

I'm getting this as well. There's been a few times, in a twitch contest, I'll start firing, get off 2 or so shots and seemingly with the first hit I'm down. I've noticed this happen alot more since the last patch as well.

I know last night I was coming up a hill with the spec ops gun and spit out a single bullet and killed someone from an impossible range...

I think its luck.

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

I've noticed this switching back and forth from MEC to USMC. With the AK, even as a medic, I have some rounds where I feel unstoppable. Every face off is a win. Just blast away at the center of mass and in 2-3 shots they are down and I'm not even hurt. Switch to the M-16 and I can't hit anything to save my life. Or anyone else's. I know it's passe to fault the gun for your bad performance, but when you go from Rambo to Captain Kangaroo in two rounds, you can't help but wonder.

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

On several occasions I've noticed that I'm being shot (my health is dropping), however, there is no movement of my "character" or impact sounds. When I actually notice this happening I react accordingly and take some cover. However, I'm sure that there's been times when my health bar is dropping, but I don't notice, so I seemingly die in one shot. This doesn't happen a lot though so I'm not really worried.

I die quite a bit from the AK one hits when playing sniper. Its a bit frustrating but heh...nice/lucky shot. I just wish I was as effective with that gun....

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

The velocity of the AK-101 and the AK-47, as well as several other weapons is high enough so that with server lag, several shots can hit you in the same time it takes you to notice you've been hit once.

So those 3 shots that are going to kill you deal damage, you notice it in one BOOM, killing you on the spot.

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

What I find even more annoying is when I'm running for cover and think I'm safe, but lag causes a bullet to, seemingly, round the corner and hit me.

Your latency, his latency, server's state, etc., etc.. Unless you figure out a way to incorporate such variables, every bit of anecdotal evidence is going to seem contradictory.

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

The head shot is a life saver. I've had times when someone has me dead to rights, half damage and falling before I see them, and it is only through the patient gamble to line up that single head shot and it hits that I survive. At the same time I've gotten the smoke puff after a head shot on an assualt guy(in the helmeted region of the head if that's even tracked) and he still kills me and lives to tell about it.

This antecdotal observation leads me to believe that the helmet actually has an impact on this as my life-saving head shots come from prone firing at a standing target while my dud headshot was while I was standing on top of a prone assualt kit. I know it sounds crazy but if you are experiencing 100% to 0% single shots as an assualt kit and mine didn't kill this guy what else could it be.

I remember there was a hit 'prediction' netcode in one of the pre-1.5 versions of Team Fortress that had bullets chasing you around cover or into it if you stop short and the server predicted that you kept going. But I thought that kind of a lag kill by netcode belonged in the same millenium as the bubonic plague and AOL, not in this generation of broadbanded multiplayer action game.

Re: Dying in (seemingly) one shot

Bhack I can personally attest to you shooting me while I have full health and me being dead instantly. Last night at the hotel comes to mind as I was attempting to sneak up to the stairs the back way and seeing you for a split second pop your head up aim and shoot. *BANG* ChIck3nL3gZ is no more.

I've just chalked it to you being insanely good and me being the n00b who doesn't know the ammo pack from a grenade tossed at his squad mates feet.

I have heard that Captain Kangaroo was one hell of a street fighter in his younger days.
