Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

You probably all know that you cannot see as far when sitting inside a tank or an APC as you can when you are outside. However if you turn your sights just so much that the place you need to check out is at the edges of your sights. It will then magically appear.....

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

yes, I usually sweep my view a little because of this

unfortunatly the engine is a little daft in the fact that it calculates view distance based on a Square around your current location...

therefore if you turn your view 45' the corner of the square will now be facing where your going... thus giving you an extra bit of draw distance...

It's being fixed in the next patch it seems.

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

it's an easy solution to a hard problem...

Imagine having to calculate viewpoints for a circle - hundreds of distances to calculate, whereas if you calculate for a square, you just have the 4 points...

Good point. They should use triangles and make it even easier.

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

a square if fine, just offset the angles to a diamond shape

It seems that a pentagon or better yet octagon would be perfect.

Not necessarily. . . it's a trick in many games that turning your view 45 degrees away from what you really want to see will give you a better look.

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

interesting... know if this is the case in bf2?

Did you guys every play Descent? (probably my favorite game of all time!)

In Descent, you could actually fly faster by going forward AND strafing (basically flying forward, but w/ the ship turned 45*)....

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

I've noticed this effect on SF night maps when gunning on the boat.

And in virtually all FPS games until the most recent generations...

You certainly couldn't break the speed records in Goldeneye without strafe-running!

BTW, you can also see better by using your peripheral vision in real life. It isn't only in games.

Makes me wonder how many others out there get "tunnelvision" when playing. Sometimes I forget that I can see more than where my crosshairs are, especially when defending and trying to watch 2 routes at once. Then I wonder how someone knifed me in the 4ss! Doh!

I'm glad this will be fixed with the patch. It has been so annoying trying to line up a long range M1A1 shot by moving side to side until you think you have the enemy in the crosshairs.

Re: Increased viewing distance in APC/Tanks

You don't know how theyll fix it though :P instead of making you see farther it will probably just make those corners go so you wont be able to use that trick
