Communicating after you're dead

Taken from the Ghost Recon forums.

The Ghost Recon game software does a fairly good job of simulating the activities of a real life special forces team, including experiencing a "virtual" death when things really go bad. When players "die" in the game, the software effectively removes them from being able to "chat" via their keyboards to anyone else still alive, including other team members. It isolates their text chats to being readable only by other players who have also died, or those players that may be waiting in the game's ready room for the next cycle to start. This programmed software feature simulates the realism of an actual death of a team member and prevents them from warning team mates about enemy threats and locations after their death, which would obviously be both highly unrealistic, as well as unfair.

Unfortunately, in our virtual Ghost Recon world we don’t use actual military radios, but with TeamSpeak and other Internet voice technologies, the similarities to real world radio practices are quite a good fit. By using this software, it's very easy to circumvent the "dead men can't talk" disabling feature of the "text chat" on the keyboard, by simply carrying on a voice conversation after your virtual death.

In the spirit of maintaining realism and fair game play, it would be appreciated if players would refrain from communicating significant information about enemy locations, movements and tactics after they have become a virtual casualty. If players who have died wish to continue chatting via voice using TeamSpeak, it is recommended that they switch to TeamSpeak Channel C (Charlie), providing it's not being used by an active unit in the game. If it is being employed in the game as an active TeamSpeak channel, then it would be appreciated if the players in virtual death mode remain silent until the mission is complete.

As a courtesy, we would encourage all players on any TacticalGamer Ghost Recon public server to follow this practice of "silence" during virtual death mode as much as possible.
I often warn my squaddies and report who killed me and how right after I'm shot and killed, even though this clearly isn't realistic. What are your thoughts? Has it not been brought up because GR is meant to be realistic and BF2 isn't?

Re: Communicating after you're dead

It's less of an issue in BF2 because people respawn. (GR kept dead people's text off the screen but with no in-game VOIP, TS was used for comms [and could therefore be used while dead].). If you're sticking to your guns for realism, yeah, hush up, but since it's entirely possible that in 15 seconds you -- the player that died -- will have another shot at your killer, speech while dead isn't all that bothersome.

Re: Communicating after you're dead

vanilla bf2 is pretty arcadish so i dont really have a problem with it... I am pretty sure that a dead person cannot talked to a person that is alive and im also pretty sure that a critically wounded person can talk to a person that is alive.

But no voip when your dead would make things very interesting for tacmod...but then people resort to things like teamspeak

Re: Communicating after you're dead

I mute TS during the actual round. It was cool seeing "There is a problem with your connection", unmuting TS, and hearing everyone moan at the same time. But anway, good points. I guess it really isn't an issue.

I used to just stay quiet after I had been killed, because it felt a little like cheating otherwise. I've since stopped doing that and now and do the same as Shafik. Fortunately the game isn't totally realistic (it would become very painful very quickly!) and so the 'player' stays engaged regardless that their 'character' is temporarily out of it. Being able to take art in the game chatter while you wait keeps it fun.

I don't think it's a problem at all. If I couldn't engage in the squad chatter while 'dead' I'd get kinda frustrated...especially in tac-mod, where I spend a lot of time 'dead'.

Cheers.

Re: Communicating after you're dead

I would like to see this implemented

Ive always wanted to be flying the blackhawk and this is what my SL heres-

MAYDAY..MAYDAY, WEVE BEEN HIT...WERE GOING DOWN...MAYDAY..MAYD..CHHHHHHHHHHHHH

than my SL yells-ZUIQUAN ZUIQUAN, COME IN, DO YOU COPY ZUIQUAN, DAMNIT ANSWER ME!!!!!

than my SL get the report form the CO that my BH was shot down over mashtuur city. the CO warns my SL that there was no hope of survival, but he kept on fighting. they sent in a recon team led by my SL to locate the wrekage, it was pretty well defended but he fought through

You see I was the only survivor of the wreck I had fought my way through some of the insurgents that originally found me, but they heavilly wounded me(I only had 3 bars left) I needed and medic quick!

I had lost all hope of ever getting out of there, but out of the blue I saw someone that I never though Id see-

Darkviper bombing the recon team as they were about to rescue me........than he turned around and gunned me down........

the end

Wouldn't it have just been quicker to respawn?

Re: Communicating after you're dead

Yeah, exactly

BF2 isn't very realistic. I actually thought for a while that you couldn't talk when you are dead, since when you hit the transmit button the little icon doesn't show up, but after flying helicopters for a while I've discovered you can. I don't think there's anything wrong with it in a game where a defillibrater will fix your massive head trauma.

Re: Communicating after you're dead

I usually dont say anything if I get killed but if I'm wounded I'm speaking up. I always thought dead people could only talk to dead people.

I hear dead people! In fact, I admit, I talk every time I die. Number of people inbound, their approach route, Whether I see/hear armor, where I am respawning and of course, Medic!

Re: Communicating after you're dead

DICE never seemed to care that much about the tactical aspect of the game over the action so they wouldn't have spent the time to make sure dead people can't speak to living.

Depending on the situation, I'll inform my squad of what happened. Usually I'll try and spot the guy and if I die, I'll just tell them to look on the radar.

Re: Communicating after you're dead

I personally don't have an issue with it, mainly because of what people have said above (bf2 favors action over tactical, short respawn times, etc.). However, one time on AA, I did this talking after dead thing and pointing out enemy locations and ended up getting slightly reprimanded for doing it. Just remember, if you ever do head over to other games like AA, don't talk after you're dead, or you'll have Turbo all over you.

Just kidding, Turbo is a great instructor for new players on AA. Anyway, on bf2, no big deal, imo.

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Root: Welcome to TG. Feel free to punctuate your sentences correctly. Monkerz: Its gonna take all my skills to beat those boys off in the future.

LOL, I am always nice about it. BF2 is a totally different animal with the unlimited re-spawns per player.
FYI:Game Club is playing AA this Sunday night.
