Debut Night

Well finally after 6 weeks of waiting for my new computer and the same amount of time posting here, I made my debut last night on the TG server. I was unable to use my mic due to the late hour it was here, around midnight to 1am time, and my family was in bed in the two rooms adjacent to my study.

However I did manage to get a few maps in playing mainly in, I think TG Thunderer's squad. Sorry if I got your name wrong, it was so hectic, I mainly played as a medic, trying to heal and revive my team mates, but it was a bit difficult on my first night. This didn't take away the enjoyment though, and I'm looking forward to many more great nights on the TG server, hopefully a lot of them with the European based players so that I am able to use my mic and take a more active part in the game. Oh and much to my surprise I did manage to kill one or two guys in a straight shootout, made my night!

On behalf of the group I'd like to congrat you on your new rig, hope it sizzles and scores where it needs to. Glad to hear you had an immersive experience. Medic's a tough job to do and DO WELL-truly medic and SL are the "glue" of any squad, really. And NOT reviving with hot lead flying about is sometimes as important as the revives on the other side of the map of the SL, with seconds left.....tough kit.

I love that as soon as a firefight starts, Explosions going and bullets whacking about, what you first hear is MEDIC! There's a hand gesture that comes to mind as you observe bodies in wide-open streets, with an enemy tank bearing down on them, no smoke, etc.

But I digress. Mic's are damned important, and the key to this being "more" than just an arcade game. You start interacting and 99% of the lads/ladies here are SUPER friendly. Some hysterical interactions to be had with the mike, as well as seriously improving the squad's performance overall.
Here's to more of the same for ya, India! Charge ahead...

Re: Debut Night

Medic eh, a class that is appreciated by fellow squad members, especially in a critical moments of taking/defending flags, also a medic that revives a squad leader is worth their weight in gold, it keeps the pressure on and saves a long walk !

I read on another thread that you installed the soundcard driver (which wasnt installed when the computer arrived), so can you hear and talk, but didnt talk because of the late hr etc? If you cant talk you can feel strangely cut off from the rest of the squad, its worth spending the time today to get that going, so that you can fully take part in everything.

I'm not sure if the mic works yet, I have sound, but I can only use the mic upto around 10 or 11pm due to the rest of my family sleeping nest to this room.

Re: Debut Night

Ok Testing the mic

I suggest
(this is the obvious bit) plug mic pink plug in pink socket on sound card, then make sure controller on mic lead is not on mute

Test 1
Download and install 'teamspeak'. Goto menu settings/ sound input output settings/ activate local test mode. Then test the mic if you can hear your own voice then you know the mic & soundcard are OK. Precede to test 2

Test 2
Go into BF2/options/sound/test microphone
if it works the green bar goes up and down as you talk, and i seem to remember you hear your own voice as well, if it doesn't work put the receive threshold to zero, once this is working procede to test three

Test 3
Inside BF2 goto multiplayer and filter for servers that have mic, join any server with plenty of players on. Join a squad, say to the squad "can you hear me", if a green mic symbol comes up then you are broadcasting (you can see when you are braodcasting in the squad menu as well), finally if someone broadcasts back "yeah we can hear you", then its job done

also you can search the 'Technical Support & FAQs ' forum for mic problems and there is lots of advice there

Re: Debut Night

Glad to see you are finally up and running...Good things are worth waiting for eh!!

Anyhow I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield.

I wanted to chime in on mic testing too. I have Creative SoundBlaster GAmer ZS sound card. It's not top of the line but it's up there.

When I first got a mic the mic test function on BF2 worked perfectly. One day the mic stopped working. I restarted and went into the mic test option and it didn't work so I figured it was nerfed somehow. I went into game and the mic works fine...and still does to this day--even though the mic test function doesn't function properly.

I think it's a weird anamoly that would probably go away if I reinstalled BF2. It does work so thankfully it's not necessary.

by the by...I don't hear myself in game over my headphones but my squadmates do.

Well just wanted to chime in with some mic info for you

Re: Debut Night

I have one advice for new mic setups: Make sure your recording setting is on "Microphone" and not on "What you hear". If the setting is on "What you hear" everybody will hear your in-game sound while you are transmitting. That can get pretty annoying.

Here is a quick guide how to set your recording source to Mic using the Creative Mixer:

Open the Mixer by doubleclicking on your Speaker Icon in the System Tray.

Bad setting:

How to change it:

Correct setting:

Hope that helps.

I feel your pain...

Being medic on a full 64 player server is not an easy task... sometimes you have bodies falling like flies all around you and those pads can't recharge fast enough and of course you have to keep dodging those bullets from enemy fire....

But it's fun and I love it... LOL!

Re: Debut Night

Thanks for all the mic advice guys, I got it to work fine. When I first asked someone if they could hear me it was very quiet, but I went back into Audio options of the game, and checked the mic boost (something like that) and after that it worked fine, I was told 5 by 5!

Re: Debut Night

I spent most of Euro Night lying on my back looking up at the sky, and the orbiting enemy UAV! But thanks to Exploding_Silvers leadership in the Learn TG squad, people would respawn as Medic when needed (under the SL's direction) - and boy, were they needed!!

Welcome India - hope to see you about the server this week. (I'm 4 days off from Monday 0700, so will be in and out of the TG Server during the day (GMT hours). So feel free to pop in if you get 5 minutes. If not, will definately catch you on Euronight next Thursday.

I'll look forward to it, I don't work anymore so every day is free for me, unless the missus wants me to go sdhopping, but I usually get out of that.

Re: Debut Night

Welcome to the board, and to the servers!

Medic is my class of choice. I love the excitment of playing this class. I agree with the others: it's a tough class to play well. But the others really appreciate it when you manage to bring them up on their feet fast!

Cheers!
