Exclamation I found the Solution to Performance Problem, time to enable your Directx 9 settings!

As a new COD2 player, I was stunned by the poor performance of my dual core PC (with 6800 Ultra and 2 gigs of rams.) I searched many forums and looked into different guides, and combined them. This will gaurantee all the people who have Directx 9 capable cards (Nvidia 6000 or above, Radeo: I am not sure). to enable the DirectX 9 settings while maintaing smooth frame rates.

There is not much that you need to do in the console:

First step:
Enable the SLI setting in your graphics option whether you have 2 cards or 1, Why? Because COD2 was designed under SLI configuration, enable this is VERY important and you will get about 10 frames boost. (this alone will probably make the game playable already.)

2nd Step: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=59144 , read and download the attachment files. (The file is at the very end of the FIRST post by myshkinbob).

Unziop, put the 2 files in your (Whatever drive:\Activision\Call of Duty 2\main\ folder, load cod2, set your video options (for Nvidia 6 series users World only Smoke and Automatic texture) , then in the console type "exec autoexec.cfg" to enable the first tweak and misc other minor tweaks, which will add them to config.cfg. you may need to repeat this should you ever change video options. To enable the second picmip tweak you only need to press "." (period) after each map load.

I can gaurantee this will ipmorove your performace greatly and you should enjoy COD2 in DirectX 9 happily. WITHOUT TEXTURE STUTTERS.

Thanks, ed! I wonder if I'm not having any of these issues because I have an AGP card. Since I can't run in SLI mode, maybe certain code paths are disabled, allowing me to avoid these issues. (?)

Dunno. But anyway, great finds. Thanks for posting them.

Strag! I have an AGP 8x 6800 Ultra too, enable it! Your game probably will get smoother during heavy firefights with smoke.

Will do, and thanks for the info.

I've never had an issue with framerates with this game, so I must be lucky. I have all settings completely maxed out (with DirectX 9.0), and I get absolutely liquid framerates, even with lots of smoke and players in view. Whatever is working correctly, I hope it doesn't break. But, if I can get a few more frames per second by enabling SLI, I'm certainly up for trying that!

Is this only for Nvidia cards? (I already did the whole SLI thing)

From what I know, it works both for ATi and Nvidia. But MAKE SURE your card is DirectX 9 capable. (Nvidia's Fx 5000 series' support for DirectX is more on paper than practical. It's well known that Fx is poor designed.)
