Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

Yay!

Help us spread the word!

http://www.tacticalsites.com/~perry/map_contest.txt - vB formatted text file of our announcement

http://www.tacticalsites.com/~perry/map_contest-alt.txt - phpBB compatible formatting

http://www.tacticalsites.com/~perry/...ntest-none.txt - no formatting, just plain ole text

This is why I was asking for BF2 websites recently

The editor can be a real bear to learn, so good luck! But, you should have plenty of time and $ome motiviation. All the editor dudes hang out at http://bfeditor.org/forum/index.php so you may wanna plop in there when you get stuck

Me too! I've never used the BF2 editor, but I remember having some fun with the editor from UT2004. I made a level with all kinds of crazy junk once. It had loads of traps, giant stargate like transporters (they even transported vehicles, it was awesome), a bridge that materialiezed beneath your feet when you crossed it, and even a bottomless pit!

Hopefully the BF2 editor won't be too hard to pick up. At least I won't have to worry about how a bottomless pit or incinerator will affect gameplay .

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

What the hell, I might give a shot as well, just to see what I can do. I've got too much on my plate right now to give it any serious thought, but maybe in the coming weeks. How does it work? Like, how do u make an object?? Do u select from a large selection of existing objects, or make ur own.. or what?

And, how demanding is the program in comparison to BF2? and edit: where do u d/l the editor?

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

You can select an object from esistings ines, or make your own. It has to render it just like the game would, so it is probably just as demanding. You can get the editor on the BF2 downloads page on the official site

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

I've made a few maps with the Battlefield Vietnam Editor when that game was big .... is the BF2 editor similar ?

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

Done a little practicing with the editor, it is kinda difficult to get used to the fact that everything is a lot bigger than it looks. I was intending on making an area of water with a small bank at the edge, with a flag at the top, I ended up with a "small" bank where you could fit like 5 tanks back to back.

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

I think that you will find that learning the editor is not something you can do in an afternoon and making a high quality map is not something that can be done in a weekend. We've given 2.5 months for this very reason. Keep pluggin away and I'm sure you'll come up with something good

Re: TacticalGamer Mapmaking Contest

How convenient, I'm already 50+% done with my 2nd map . Going to need quite a bit of testing to get the gameplay right though, as this is only the 2nd map I ever made for any game.

Tip for people who haven't worked with the editor yet:

Do not even bother unless you have a gig of ram or more and a Radeon 9800 pro or equivalent/above. The editor is even more of a ressource hog than the game itself as you cannot turn off details and there is no Level of Detail, everything is displayed at 100% detail even from far away.

Also, save a lot. Like every 10 minutes. The editor crashes a lot and if you suddenly get very low FPS, save, because that means it's about to crash or run out of video memory.

I don't want to discourage people, just know what you're getting into. The editor is still in beta and while it's very powerful and relatively easy to use after you learn it, it eats up computers alive.
