What's really behind America's clinging to the pesky penny? Nostalgia cannot be the answer; if we can give up the barbershop shave with its steam towels, we can give up anything.

I'm ready to see them go bye-bye... I always just leave them in the penny dishes that are sitting next to every cash register. They're annoying and serve no practical purpose as a general circulation coin. They would still be necessary for financial transactions, as nobody wants to be on the losing end of rounding to a nickel when cashing something (closing an account or cashing a check) and we certainly can't eliminate cents from calculating large figures (think about the payroll for a large corporation-a couple of pennies from each person can add up to thousands of dollars).

But how do we convince retailers to round to the nickel? Would reduced circulation do the trick?
