Need Help with Windows Moviemaker

I have a 36 minute DVD that I want to pull about 5 minutes off of and then later put music to. Unfortunately I am having a hell of a time. The problem is two fold.

#1. I have never done this
#2. I can not seem to capture the video off my DVD in the CD ROM drive.

Now, I have all the necessary components. DVD player/recorder etc. When I look in the help section on how to capture video from a DVD in the drive there is nothing. It only describes how to capture from outside devices that are hooked up to the computer. i.e. VCR, cam corder etc. I did a search on DVD and came up empty. So my first question is how do I get video (it can be the whole 36 minutes) from the DVD to my harddrive or to movie maker?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Need Help with Windows Moviemaker

Trooper and I talked on AIM. Thanks. What we couldn't figure out was this. Below is the files on the disc I have. When I tried to import them WMM wouldn't accept them. Do I need to convert them to another format?

Try daemon tools. I think that is how it is spelled. I us it to rip DvD's and such. Never tried what you are wanting to do.

Re: Need Help with Windows Moviemaker

I vaguely recall a similar problem I had making a guild movie. I actually had to use THREE progs. to get it done. Windows Movie Maker, ULead Video Studio, and Creative WaveStudio. I used ULead to import/translate certain vid. files to what I needed, wavestudio to handle the sound, and then I just compiled it all in movie maker.

Usually when you're doing any kind of "content creation", whether it be 3d CAD work, terrain or modeling, or Digital Video work, you're gonna have to use more then 1 program. I have yet to see a prog. that does everything.

Re: Need Help with Windows Moviemaker

the best way to do this:

DVDShrink to get the segment you want

rename the .VOB file to .mpg

use Windows Media Encoder to make the file a .WMV file

Import the .WMV file to windows movie maker.....

I'm sure there's a way to simply capture from DVD playback though, then save it into any format you want. Im not sure which prog. would do it though.

Well, sure. You could have an actual DVD Player (not a dvd drive, a separate dvd player), have a capture card, like what is on my USB tv tuner, plug in the RCA cables, and directly capture the video and sound to .mpeg4.

Yeah, but that's analog, so it's going to look and sound like crap.
