Comms?

Ive been lurking about the public servers trying to get my uber hacks working for BF2, however one thing i have noticed is a lack of comms. I dont just mean in chat between squads i mean voice comms. Even in CS:s public servers there are people speaking/singing/yelling into mics. Do servers disable this feature? or is it something about my game that is not allowing me to hear/send voice comms through my mic?

Re: Comms?

VOIP is pretty plentiful on our servers.. On lots of other servers, people just don't talk, the server is setup wrong, or people are using TeamSpeak / Vent to talk.

When I pub raid, I would say I hear comms 1 out of 10 ten times. They are enabled on most servers, few utilize them.

One thing I've started doing is look for a squad a lot of players with the same prefix. They are most likely all from the same clan/group and I have found they use teamwork and comms more than a normally mixed squad. It's never a sure thing, but I have found it better than a random squad.

Re: Comms?

There is actually an important technical cause for the lack of voip on pubbies. To use the voip, you have to forward 2 ports on your router (which most people use I believe). Most people now how to do this.

You also need to open ports for battlefield. Simply look it up somewhere, open port, done. However for the voip there is also a port, and admins can change it. The HUGE mistake by EA is that there is NO way at all!!! to find out what this voip port is on a specific server.

Now for our server I have gone and looked up what the standard voip ports are, and (I hadn't changed them myself on our ranked server) I found that it was NOT on the standard port.

If the correct ports aren't opened, then you will usually hear people speak, but they won't hear you!

So you can infer that maybe 80 percent of the pubbie players can even hear voip.

I have currently opened a wide range of ports to be able to use voip on most servers, and I can, but I worry about my pc's security....

********* you EA if I can find a problem you sure as hell knew about it....
Huge problem, but no-one realises it.

A good start would be to display the voip ports on the server graphic. (Hint ----> Admin)

Re: Comms?

I don't think the client needs to do any forwarding, BigGaayAl. I only forward port 22, 113, and 6881-6889 (for bittorrent) on my router and I get VOIP just fine. I think that the port forwarding probably needs to be done on the server end..

Re: Comms?

The clients don't have to open any special ports. I have my firewall locked down unless I'm testing and running my machine as a server.

Re: Comms?

Hmm im puzzled here. For example playing with my brother he often can't speak on a random public server, then he'd open some ports come back and have it working.

I don't understand. BF2 uses a port right, so if it's not forwarded/opened correctly, how would the router know which computer to send it too? Or maybe you people use DMZ?

Please enlighten me.

It happens so much that I join a server, and a mate that is using voip cant talk but can hear me, while it works fine on other servers. I can't see how that could be caused by router settings server side, because he can hear me while I cant hear him so the voip works on the serverside.

*edit* A possible factor I can think of is also wether the voip server is a seperate server or not (which it is in TG I think).

Please reply if you have suggestions.

Re: Comms?

Some people have outgoing ports blocked for one reason or another (useful for tipping you off that your machine is infected, I guess), so those people would have to open outgoing ports.

Re: Comms?: oddball topic

Lol I understand you fearfull dave. I know something about the ports and all. But here Icky starts about outgoing ports and how this thing indicates spyware; got me pants down there.

Someone Uber-sweet should make a write-up about this.. or give a link to one if it exists.

All I know is that for most people in the BF2 community Voip just doesn't work and certainly not on all servers that have voip=1.

By the way on the example I gave about my brother and Icky's comments: since it's my brothers job to install and maintain pc's, I kinda doubt that his quiote-new pc has spyware that is blocking things (ports).

In my "clan" there are a lot of people (a bit nitwits but still) that are able to use teamspeak, but even after months they can't get it fixed damn pity.

Q: still can't see how bfvoip can reach u if ports aren't opened when you use a router. Hmm maybe that is only a problem if you want to host a game yourself?
