Can player names be hidden?

I don't really see the point of knowing who killed you or who you killed, or to be able to see the name of a target (though some sort of placeholder indicator is probably needed since it helps you see where the target is or whether a vehicle is occupied.

For the hardcore Tactical Mod it's probably better to be rid of the telltale red tags all together. Keep blue tags only for your own squad.

When you remove the names, it's just like playing against a bunch of (smarter) bots. I think it's good to know whom you've blown away.

The Tac Mod has done what it can to remove the enemy name tags. Friendly tags are only shown up to a certain distance. That's to simulate player recognition that you can't get through a game with only a select few character avatars.

We thought about removing kill messages, but many in the community wanted those left in for the same of camaraderie and the ocassional smack-talk.

Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine, regardless of the level of advantage, if any, it gives over the opposing team." -- Tactical Gamer Primer

I think it'll be far more realistic and also immersive to NOT know when you've killed someone or whom you've killed. In fact public chat should be disabled. The enemy is the enemy, a bunch of faceless, nameless baby-eaters.

If people won't trade the gratification of smack-talking and sweet revenge for a more involved gaming experience, replace user and hit any key to continue.

Re: Can player names be hidden?

This has been debated pretty extensively. One of the major gripes people had with RO was that it was too hard to tell who was who in-game.

I'm all for realism and immersion ala my support of TacMod, but then again I'm part of TG because I enjoy the comraderie (sp?) and rivalry of the group. Knowing that I'm squaring off against someone I play regularly with is pretty satisfying and brings a higher-level of excitement for me.

Computer games are different, you cant apply the same realism rules in computer games. I think a game should do what they do best help you having a great experience and help you orientate yourself so the game does not get stale and unpersonal. If you remove some of those things games will become less attractive and we all will go out and play in the real world. You would not like that.

Re: Can player names be hidden?

Let's also consider that knowing people's names is key to reporting 'problem children' who can't obey the rules. As much as we like to think that TG is immune from the 'pubbie problem' the fact is it takes some policing sometimes to get people to play nice.

Once again i gaze into thebleakaffinty of wisdom and must agree.

I try to role play to the mask myself on Tac Mod, but i cannot lobby to 86 this feacture.

I would not mind it if was removed though.

Like my Irr friend wrote, you would have a harder time finding the bad players without it.

Plus a lot of players would be looking up at the scroller at the top left of the screen to see if they killed any body in the bushes they were fragging or something. most players would do this keeping their eye off the ball on the middle of the screen.

I like the way you think. More realism.

Re: Can player names be hidden?

Do what ya want to make Tac Mod more realistic. I disagree with removing the names from Vanilla as I like knowing who I am going up against. It's half the fun being able to talk about the battle afterwards and knowing exactly who you squared off against. I play Vanilla not because it's realistic (When was the last time my character ever had to stop to sleep, eat, relieve himself). I play Vanilla because it's a lot of fun for me.

Would be hilarious if players had to stop to take a no.2

"Guys! Hold that target, I've got to take a dump first"

Hence the tactical advantage of the Irregulars

but yeah, if I wanted a realistic combat experience, i would join the army. I play bf2 on tg because I like the people and the style of vanilla play. It wouldn't be as fun if I couldn't see who I was fighting/killing. Besides, the after action report wouldn't be as fun to write.
