BF2142 producer vows 'less bugs than BF2'

Quote:
We've just returned from a trip to not-so-sunny Sweden to visit Digital Illusions, maker of the epic Battlefield series, to see how the newest entry Battlefield 2142 is shaping up.

We'll be bringing you a full report and an interview with the design team in the very near future, but during the course of a very interesting look at the game, senior producer Marcus Nilsson went on the record to tell us that BF2142 will be "A lot less buggy than Battlefield 2 - and you can write that down." Which we now duly have.

Nilsson was responding to many fans' criticisms of Battlefield 2, which saw a number of patches post release to fix bugs and exploits for the epic online shooter. Nilsson added that the team were taking the quality threshold extremely seriously this time around and would be setting a higher benchmark in QA to ensure Battlefield 2142 would debut as bug-free as possible.

Advertisement:
Nilsson also said game balancing was a very 'delicate' issue for the shooter and the team would be tweaking the game right up until release, but that Battlefield 2142 would offer a faster paced, more rewarding and much deeper squad experience for Battlefield fans through its network battlefield system - although Lone Wolf style players certainly wouldn't be neglected. Nilsson concluded by saying the move to a futuristic setting had allowed DICE's development and art teams to be a whole lot more creative in their approach to making the Battlefield sequel.

We'll be bringing you the full story on our BF2142 experience soon, so keep it tuned to CVG for more Battlefield goodness.

I've not a lot of faith in this process. I'd presume that the BF2 people thought THEY were taking the quality threshold seriously, too. :-/

Someone should write up a nice letter and send it to dice. Saying TG would be the best candidates to beta test. Logical thinking is what they need and of course an open mind. Not some die-hard "do anything to win" clans beta testing.

Incorrect. Clans are EXACTLY what they need, because they'll take an inch and turn it into a mile if the coding is poor.

You don't beta with the casual set; you beta with the people who will break your stuff if there's a crack in it.

Well If I were to beta test, I'd try to look for oddball bugs and such.

Re: BF2142 producer vows 'less bugs than BF2'

Betatesting is about flushing out not so obvious issues with the game, things that take a little work to uncover. Just playing games doesn't uncover issues, you have to try new strats or test things out that might seem dumb at first. It takes a mix of player types to test out a game, but you need significant representation from the major groups to get a balanced testing group. You need a lot of competitive players to really push the game out to its limits, that's their perspective on the game, play it to the max (usually).

Re: BF2142 producer vows 'less bugs than BF2'

I tend to think they are in it for the money - cashing in on the legacy bf1942 left behind. They've released three expansion packs for BF2 now but the original product still runs like crap. I've not much faith left in these guys, either. Long live bf42.
