I Have A Big Idea

I was thinking about what i like about TG and for me as well as most i think is the teamwork. For me that means the more organized the game play is the better, from the CO down to the SL's. One aspect of teamwork is the SM's following their SL's orders in achieving a common goal. The other aspect is the SL's providing aggressive, assertive and active leadership. This is an area where i think TG maybe able to greatly improve the play and become a community of playes like no other. I say that without much knowledge of what else is out there other than the fact that palyed on many servers but once i found TG i knew i was in the right place.

Anyway my big idea is leadership training. Maybe create a group like the irregulars for those who desire to become either CO's or SL's. Leaders would have a special designation in their names and when a member of the leader class or group plays they will be expected to assume a SL or CO role, it wouldnt be mandatory but expected. Maybe create a leadership primer and seek out people to become trainers all with the goal of creating a group of leaders that will really take the game to its highest level and realize its full potential.

What do you all think of that?

I like your style of thinking. A problem that I see is that these known SLs will have a big bullseye on them. Many of our common SLs already know this.

I think the Irregulars pretty much fill that role already but you have some good ideas about maybe a primer. Jimmytwohands is working on trying to get the Tactical minicamps back up and running and I am sure something like this will be taught. Maybe you could work on a primer for the community?

Yeah, attending an Irregulars practice is very close to leardership training. Anyone who wishes to squad lead on TG should attend at least 1 Irregular's practice. And if you're not looking to squad lead, attending a practice will educate you on good tactics, and just all around tighter teamwork.

If you form a squad, let me know and I will hop on it to help you out. Otherwise hop in mine and learn by osmosis. There is quite a bit you can learn just by being in the role. Make your squad name something about TG Learn and people will flock to it to help you out. Otherwise, irregulars are a good idea. If you have specific things you want to learn about, drop me a PM and we can hit up server 2.

Re: I Have A Big Idea

TO get into the specifics of training, we could have Official Coaching Sessions.

A coaching session could be set up in advance, the trainee is the SL, the coach is a SM and there are other SMers.
The coaching is verbal, but not on the in game VOIP, the coach & SL have a seperate medium of communication, either a TS channel or xfire.
In their private conversation the coach and trainee SL focus in on a pre-defined agenda
eg, for a raw beginner, how to set orders on the map, how to tell your squad the order so its clear & authoritative, how to talk to the squad to keep them together.
They just concentrate on the few key points that will bring the trainee SL ability forward

What about this ?

Look back in the forums about....6 months ago. We did this on a semi-regular basis. Also, each of the inhouse squads regularly cycle in SL training so that they all can step to the plate as the game unfolds.

Re: I Have A Big Idea

Lucky Shot summed it up best. Yes, the training with the IRR or TG Learn will help you get the technical stuff down but nothing can replace just going out there and Squadleading and gaining experience. Before you SL take some time to observe how the more experienced Squadleaders run their squads and how they react in certain situations.

PJ, I know I had a bad night SLing but was it so bad that you came up with this idea? . I like the idea of training, but like aculle said you learn by doing and watching the other SL's. And I know you've teamed up with me enough to learn what not to do, so next time you get the lead pal

Re: I Have A Big Idea

In terms of gaining more actual "hands-on" practice as SL. I find it very helpful if you start playing when the servers is less populated, cause at that time you will have less enemy to deal with and most of all, you will likely to have a very small squad to manage. The pacing of the game will be a bit slower (and less serious) and that will give you more time to think.

The other way is to SL when pubbing, start a sqaud "Teamplay" and you will be able to attract people that actully wants to be in a squad to have a SL that actually give orders.

Re: I Have A Big Idea

I am going to post this as a flyer also. If you have questions about Squad Leading, then attend today's Irregulars Practice. Shafik is going to be leading the majority of it with some tips and tricks also around Squad Leading. Bring your questions and expect to have fun!

Practice starts at 5pm Eastern, 7/15... About 45 minutes from now... I'm bringing Mt. Dew for everyone!

Re: I Have A Big Idea

Some of my thought behind this idea is demonstrated by my expierence this past weekend. i jumped into the game and people were jumping around squads or finding themselves SL and jumping out of that. Before things settled down the other side had run up quite a lead and they never looked back. Even when things settled down you could tell that the people who were SL didnt want to be there because you barely heard a word from them. I thought if there were a place to go where they could be trained and not feel intimidated as they would during a real game then it would be an advantage for all. Maybe the Irregulars is good place to do this.

No reader, your not the type of SL i was thinking when i posted this.

Re: I Have A Big Idea

After LuckyShot's appearance as a guest DI in the last Irregs practice there was clearly an appetite demonstrated for more SL training.

We will run an Irregs practice at some point in the (near) future where we work on SL skills.

In the meantime, the posts above have excellent advice. I've got loads to learn as an SL but one thing I did was PM some of the veterans who were in my squads for comments/advice on my squad leading...it was very helpful.

Cheers.
