Great Wall 7/14...

There were a number of good rounds tonight, none better than Great Wall of China where the Chineese eeked out a 14 ticket win. The game finally went their way within the last 80 tickets as we were at a standstill. When they picked up a CO, they slowly grew a lead. As the EU side, we started at the Quang Compound before finally making a break for the SE flag (Lao Sang Hill?). Great round as we went back and forth with attacking squads until finally they stopped attacking. Names that I saw over and over and over again included Patriot, Reader, E-Male, Jaymind. Props to RocketPunch, Jaymind, Buckets, D.Blonov and Boot who put up a fierce defense against what at times were 2 tanks and an apc all bearing down on our flag. The greatest challenge would be starting with the wrong kits against an all armor squad then re-kitting as the enemy would start to trail in infantry troops. Great game guys!

Re: Great Wall 7/15...

I squad led for the 7th with Gixxer, bleak, icky, dustermahn, and shakey. We attacked and defended the quan fortress for most of the round. For 90% of the round gixxer as medic and i as sniper stayed in one of the fortresses near the flag just preserving a spawn point and sniping targets. The rest of the squad moveda round as i told them and generally had contact with the enemy very far away from our flag, which is always a good thing. Occasionaly i sent em out to other flags to help, and i think we were always successful when doing that. We only lost the fortress flag a few times, but it was never for more than 30 seconds. Generally it was because we were spread out, but gixxer and i were able to hold em off long enough for the squad to fall back and wipe the opposition out.

Next map was oman and part way through i stepped up as CO. I tried capping the US arty CP and holding our 2 flags, but we just couldnt seem to get enough bodies on the flag to actually cap anything. Also, any time we attacked it seemed too slow and the US was able to bring units from their other beach flags to help out. Eventually we attacked both sides of the beach and we started to make head way, but it was far too late and we already bled too much. Big props go to Duke for easily being the best jet pilot as far as listening to the CO go. Everytime our squads were on attacked, id zoom in and have him bomb infantry. It was important that he bombed them quickly or else our guys would be bombed as well, but he bombed quickly and often got 4+ kills. It took a lot of testicles to bomb a flag that seemed to have a lot of friendlys on it.

Uhg, i feel dirty after giving props to duke

Oman at times was brutal... I remember being bombed, artied, bombed again then artied again, but the 5th spawn was still able to have our squad fend off the attacking squad. The bomber was good for 40% of my squads deaths. I am always a happier man when that vehicle is yanked. The squad did well, but it wasn't as much fun as earlier rounds.

Duke had 4 times as many kills as the next guy on his team...

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

I kept changing my mind about removing stuff at the beginning of the round. Was all ready to dump the bomber but then it would be 2 jets vs 1. Contemplated removing all jets but with bodofokoo playing I knew I can't let him go unopposed in that chopper. At that point I just said screw it...lets have an old fashioned oman slaughterfest. It had been a while...certainly looked intense from my view from the chopper. Hopefully those playing had some fun.

Thumbs up Re: Great Wall 7/14...

Well, I had a blast.

Great wall was a great game, even we (EU) didn't won that round, but it was close. It was non stop action with LuckyShot SL'ing our squad attacking and defending Lao Sing hill. Omen was another good one and I don't find the Arti and Jet attacks being too overpowering, and I am amazed how well coordinated they are. Don't get me wrong, we did get hammered from them when the flag we are at became the next target.

Nice SL'ing and good team communication!

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

Duke's score - 170
Next highest player - 80 something

Again Great Wall was a blast to play. That map seems highly underrated.

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

I wanted to compliment Santa on his strategy as it was VERY effective during Great Wall.
It indeed worked very well and if the flag ( Quan Fortress ) was being attacked, Santa and I could hold the attack off long enough for Shakey, Bleak, Dustermahn, and Icky to get back from their duties and re-cap the flag or fend off the attack.
I think Santa only had 3 deaths the entire round and one of them was because he jumped off the wall, opened parachute, hit the hill, rolled down and died and me thinking I could do it better then he did .... tried to go after him to revive and died as well.

Props to Santa!

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

Yeah, Great wall was a fun run. We were covering Lao Seng and Quan Compound throughout the game. The battles were some of the fiercest I'd ever been in and still managed to keep a decent K/D ratio. I couldn't tell if Lucky Shot was just EVERYWHERE or just EVERYWHERE I WAS. I was pleased to get some good shots in on guys that I've been unsuccessful at getting a bullet on before .

E-male was our SL that round and did a great job putting us exactly where we needed to be and watching our backs. Reader was all over it too. The whole squad was just plain ready to take that map on.

RocketPunch and Lucky Shot were just a nemesis. I mentioned a positive ratios? Well, if we narrowed it down to just K/D vs. those two it was a loosing story for me I think.. and add Mantis into that group.. geeeez. At least it wasn't Sordavie this time

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

Great Wall was one of the best times I had at squad leading. P8triot, Reader1234 et al (sorry, again names escape me), did great things. We managed to keep two flags through most of the night, Lao Seng and Quan Compound, and Luckyshot proved a fierce enemy. I do not like trying to hold onto two flags, makes for weakness and confusion, but as is often the case, without a CO no one wants to be the squad at the rear flag. Special thanks to my Bravo fireteam for doing much of the less exciting defense work.

I used a new stlye (to me) of movement to keep the spawn point changing, which served us well during some long flag-recaptures -- Lao Seng changed hands too many times -- hard to defend, hard to attack. I am far too easy a 'ticket' to be up close when my squad is attacking, and I take pride in staying alive and out of the action so others can keep the fight going. Not the only way to SL, but the one way that works for slower old farts such as I. As much as possible I try to keep a position which allows me to spot enemy (on your left, around the corner Reader...).

A simple division of the squad into Alpha and Bravo fire teams worked very well. Also made it possible to use one fireteam to hold on to Lao Seng and another to 'seal' the main eastern entrance into the Quan Compond area. SLs take note -- this allowed one of our other China squads to get Quan Compond, and once it was cleared of enemies, I could move my fireteams forward.

It is still impossible to hold on to both flags if we are under heavy assault at both, This is where squads without a CO have to think about the big picture. Defense must be in place before a team can win a map.

Great fun last night. It is a pleaure being SL when everyone sticks together, chatter is kept to a minimum within the squad, good ideas are presented to the SL, kit changes are requested, and team cohesion is strong.

Trying to get SMs in the habit of giving me a verbal confirmation of each kill when we are assaulting -- this allows the whole squad to have a better sense of enemy strength and assault progress.

Just glad that Santa was on the other side of the map ... (although I would always rather have him in my own squad then as an 'enemy')

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

I had a great time on Great Wall and Oman*...I played so damn much last night though it's pretty much all a blur!!

Oh wait...except for the part where I repeatedly led my squad into the death traps layed by guys that had "7th" in front of their name!

It was good fight though...the map is under-rated. At one point I had to laugh as I assigned point to one of the guys and he confessed that he didn't really know the map or how to get to where we wanted to go...I laughed, cause I didn't really know either which was why I asked him to go point!!

NB: * thanks Sassy for puttin up with me blaring squad orders into the command channel by accident

Cheers.

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

The interseting aspect of last night was that the map before great wall had a near full server, and when great wall came on it was half full. Then Oman came on and it was nearly full again. It feels like every time a booster map comes on that we are trying to halt any progress we are having as far as population goes.

Anyway, mantis brought up a good point about taking aircraft and such out. If any aircraft is taken out, the rest have to go as well or else the rock papers scissors method of balancing that DICE/EA did goes out the window. Oman would probably be pretty fun with no air assets at all, even blackhawks taken out (nothing to take BHs out for constant halo drops).

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

But then once the US gets pushed to the carrier they're basically screwed. While it's unlikely that they'll come back from that anyway, taking blackhawks out instantly nerfs the US on any carrier based map.

Re: Great Wall 7/14...

I really enjoyed Great Wall. I realized last night that most of my bad GW experiences have been when my squad tried to bring armor inside the walls. Last night, we dished out some bad experiences by pounding any armor which tried to come in through our front gates. Santa did an excellent job anchoring the squad, and that made it nearly impossible for anyone to clean us out, even if they did nab our flag.

Oman on the other hand... OH MAN.
