Re: Cheesiest Tactics in Video Game History

Ah. A new factiod (the 1999 story) to help people understand the difference between crackjumping (CSS, BF2) and bunnyhopping (CS1.6 engine exploit, NS and DYS intended design). The author uses the term "bunnyhopping" correctly, it seems, but you'll see people frustrated with crackjumping ignorantly cite "bunnyhopping" in our forums too often, despite the fact that bunnyhopping only exists on our servers among the titles which include it in their very designs (DYS and NS).

Quote:
As legend has it, virtuoso Doom and Quake programmer John Carmack coined this term in 1999 when he complained that "Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sigourney Weaver don't get down a hallway by hopping like a bunny rabbit." So-called "bunny hoppers" had already infested Carmack's popular online shooters Quake and Quake II, and the programmer wasn't about to let this cheesy tactic ruin his upcoming game Quake III: Arena. But after massive backlash from Quake-aholics, Carmack sheepishly re-added the feature with a cryptic note in his .plan file: "removed tripple bunny-hop protection, it was too arbitrary and didn't accomplish its goal."

The primary reason for bunny hopping is two-fold. First, it keeps the player from being an easy target, an especially important goal in a twitch shooter like Quake III, where rockets whiz by like falling leaves on a crisp autumn afternoon. Second, ... movement boost by jumping; repeatedly jumping, as you might guess, stacked exponentially to give rampant bunny hoppers inhumanly fast speed. Though the worst bunny-hop exploits have mostly been smoothed out, it's still a widespread tactic (cheat?) in online shooters.
Notice how he explains movement as a required consideration in the two-part designation of bunnyhopping. If the player isn't trying to get from Point A to Point B faster than normal, and I'm calling what he's doing "bunnyhopping", I appear ignorant, and ignorance isn't justified by disdain.

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Root: Welcome to TG. Feel free to punctuate your sentences correctly. Monkerz: Its gonna take all my skills to beat those boys off in the future.

This is a travesty! TecmoBowl was completely snubbed!!! What about the William "Refigerator" Perry nose-tackle-dive-insta-sack?!?! Or the Randal-Cunningham-impossible-to-defend run/pass threat!?!

Re: Cheesiest Tactics in Video Game History

Whiskey, dont forget Bo Jackson running plays either.

On the NHLPA 93 the key to defending against that play is learning to control your goalie. In the countless number of leagues we created in college the move was accepted as a part of the game you just had to learn to control your goalie and play some defense. The real cheapness in the game is Jeremy Roenick, he is essentially unstoppable in the correct hands.

I have never used any cheatcodes in any of the GTA games.

of course.. but we didn't really consider that a cheesy 'tactic'... he was just one of many uber-players (Christian Okoye, Lawrence Tayler, Ronnie Lott, etc.)...

For the dive-sack and 'randal-option' there was litterally NOTHING you could do to stop it

I know theres a ton.. but this one comes to mind... Think way back College Football 95 for genesis... Colorado .. Cordell Stewart.. 100 EVERYTHING . You could run the option with him and never let the ball go and gain tons of yardage on every play LOL

Re: Cheesiest Tactics in Video Game History

Did they phone this in or what?

Bunny hopping should be in the top 3, I've never even heard someone complain about the "Newb Combo" (you might as well complain when someone gets the Rocket Launcher first), and cheats for GTA make it but not the Game Shark? Baraka gets singled out for one easily counterable tactic, I can think of something worse then that off the top of my head, here's a hint:

Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken! Hadouken!

Yeah, he had nearly perfect ratings. I used the Rangers a lot though, so Mike Gartner was my man. 100 speed, couldnt catch him.
