Re: New Conroe Build

Are you planning on overclocking? If not, you could save some money by getting some cheaper DDR2-667 RAM. I also read that the S3 does not have solid capacitors. The DS3 does and is apparently more reliable in the long run.

I'm planning on OC'ing a little bit, but at the same time I don't want to spend too much since I've already dipped into my grad school savings. Hopefully this build will last me a long time.

Good to know about the capacitors - I switched the mobo to the DS3. Thank you!

Re: New Conroe Build

Just wondering. If this is not your only computer and If you can find a free DVD ROM and get a cheaper (smaller) HD, you can get a 7900GT (24 RPP) vs a 7600GT (12RPP).

pretty good deal -> XFX Geforce 7900GT PV-T71G-UCF7 Video Card - Retail at Newegg.com

Just a thought. As it stand it is pretty good already. I built my system with a 1k budget back in March, I decided to reuse a really old CD-rom drive I had and a very cheap (but not bad) OEM SATA3.0 HD. I then use the money I save for a EVGA 7900GTC0.

For a $30 bucks more you may consider a X1800XT

SAPPHIRE Radeon X1800XT 100154 Video Card - OEM at Newegg.com

Re: New Conroe Build

The X1800XT will blow the doors off that 7600GT. No comparison.

The evidence.

Hm that's a good deal. Does outpost handle exchanges for defective merchandise well?

Re: New Conroe Build

1. Outpost.com | Ultra $59.99

2. Outpost.com | Ultra $54.99

Can someone tell me if there's a difference between the two other than price?

Well, the rebate form for the second is 404. The rebate form for the first specifies a black PSU, so maybe the color? The rebates also expire at different times...

Re: New Conroe Build

Well, all the parts arrived yesterday and I got the system working. It's so much cooler and quieter than my previous build.

I tried out BF2 at 1024x768, max settings, 4xAA and it looked beautiful with high framerates. No more slideshow gameplay for me!

Re: New Conroe Build

Glad to hear. I'm looking at a new system as well and my specs match yours almost exactly. I've never built my own from scratch (I went with ABS last time), but have handled numerous overhaul upgrades with new motherboards, cpu, ram and gfx. I just priced an abs computer vs newegg and the diy is about $400 cheaper.

My only concern on building myself from scratch is the fear of, "it won't turn on" and I don't know which part could be DOA. Does anyone have advice on this, should I be worried or is that fairly uncommon these days?
